The Delimitation o the Outer Edge o the continentalMargin o Sri Lanka under the United Nations conventionon the Law o the Sea (UNcLOS).
Cooperating institution:
The Ministry o Fisheries and Aquati Resoures (MF&AR). High Level Task Fore
appointed by the Government to manage and exeute the projet whih is
loated at National Aquati Resoures Researh and Development Ageny (NARA)
Goal:
to assist Sri Lanka to delineate the Outer Edge o the continental Margin
o Sri Lanka in terms o the UN convention on Law o the Sea (UNcLOS).
Objective:to ondut a seabed survey and aquire seismi and other geographial data
pertaining to the ontinental margin enabling Sri Lanka to submit doumentation
to the United Nations commission on the limits o the ontinental shel.
Project period:
10.2.2004 - 31.12.2008
Total budget:
NOK 37 million
Programme
The programme onsists o the ollowing elements:
1. A desktop study o the outer edge o the ontinental margin o Sri Lanka
with ous on data required and the data available in the publi domain.
2. Establishing a National Projet (DEOcOM) and assoiated inrastruture
to manage data aquisition, proessing and interpretation, as well as
the preparation o the fnal submission o the outer limits o the
ontinental shel o Sri Lanka to the UN commission on the Limits
o the continental Shel (cLcS).
3. Planning and exeuting ativities to aquire neessary additional data

Brie history o the projetThe projet was planned or start up in 2004, but the work on ontratual
arrangements took more time than expeted and only some prourement
work regarding the resident advisor ommened in 2004.
The resident advisor took up his position with DEOcOM in 2005. NPD is
the ontratual partner or the advisor. A tender proess or aquisition oseismi data was initiated and fnalized during the autumn o 2005.

Due to an inrease in the global rates or this kind
o seismi servies, it beame neessary to apply to
NORAD or additional unding in the orm o mixed
redits to the amount o USD 2 mill.
Ativities in 2006 GGS was awarded the ontrat or aquisition o
seismi data, making use o the Russian vesselMezen. Due to a legal laim against the vessel
the aquisition o data ailed.
A new bidding round or prourement o seismiservies was arranged in the period july-
september 2006. The Belgian ompany GEMS was
hosen by the Sri Lankan government as winner
o the assignment. Unoreseen problems have so
ar hindered fnalization o the ontrat between
the parties regarding the aquisition.
