Project:
Support to Petroleum Data Arhive or Tanzania operated by TPDc
Cooperating institution:
Tanzania Petroleum Development corporation ( TPDc)
TPDc was ormed in 1969. The primary role was to oversee the operations o Agip.
Following the disovery o the Songo Songo Gas feld, and subsequent relinquish-
ment by Agip, TPDc undertook the urther appraisal and planning
o the ommerialisation o the gas feld. TPDc is now geared to managing Songo
Songo interests as well as exploration in other basins in the ountry.
The mandate o the orporation is to spearhead, ailitate and undertake oil explo-
ration and development in Tanzania.
Goal: Inreased soial and eonomi growth in Tanzania through efient
exploration and exploitation o the petroleum resoures in a sustainable way.
Objective:To enhane the quality and apaity o the National Arhive o
Petroleum Data in TPDc, Dar es Salaam, to transribe, store and manage all
relevant petroleum data whih the upstream petroleum industry need to
operate efiently in Tanzania.
Project period: January 2005 - Deember 2007
Total budget: NOK 1.94 mill

Cooperating institutions in Norway:NORAD
Brie history o the projetNORAD has previously supported the establishment o a Petroleum Data Arhive
at TPDc in Dar es Salaam rom 1985 to 1997 under the TAN051 projet. At that
time onsiderable resoures were used to reormat Tanzanian petroleum data to
more modern storage media. The data projet was part o a larger projet, whih
also oused at supporting the ommerialisation o the Song Songo Gas Projet.
Unortunately the projet was not ontinued at that time by NORAD and both the
support to the Petroleum Data Arhive and the assistane to MEM or the Songo
Songo terminated.
NPD still has some o the old TPDc data in our data storage and we have sine
1997 been in the position to over priority needs or opies o data when TPDc
has requested suh support.

6.14The urrent projet to revitalize the Petroleum Data
Arhive reeived the initial support rom the INP in-
stitutional support programmes in Mozambique,
supported by the Embassy in Maputo and the INP
chairman Mabote. The projet has greatly benefted
the regional ooperation between the two Petroleum
Data centers in Maputo and Dar es Salaam. There is at
the moment inreasing interest or exploration in East
Aria. capaity to provide old data to the international
petroleum industry and apaity to reeive new data or
registration and storage is thereore very important.
Ativities in 2006Training o operators and maintenane personnel
was initiated in February in parallel with hardware
maintenane by TSS engineers. Not all maintenane
ould be undertaken in DSM, two 4280-drives were
shipped to Norway or repairs.
The meta-database ontaining all projet inputs
has been brought up to date.
Tape drives returned to TPDc in May. One ound
to be working
June, one IBM 3590 drive developed problems and
was deommissioned. Remaining 3590 was used or
both integrity and opying.
Additional hardware maintenane was done by
Khangela consulting during a 10 day period in August.
Integrity hek o random inputs was initiated.
TPDc personnel have run integrity tests on enough
input (10 per ent - i.e. 400 items) tapes to ensure that
the data, in general, has not deteriorated. This has been
time onsuming due to varying TANEScO power sup-
ply and the at that only the single loader 3480 was
running. The use o an in-house generator has enabled
progress. The results o this testing is promising as the
tapes have been ound to be readable although some
inonsistenies between label-ino and atual data on
tape our.
Sanning o observer reports and other doumentation
is well underway, but had to be halted due to lak o
disspae. More dis apaity will have to be
purhased.
A data set opied rom 3480 to 3590 has been produed
on request rom Petrodel Resoures in onnetion with
a Prodution Sharing contrat (PSA) with TPDc and the
Government.
Plans 2007Start o ull sale reormatting o all projet 3480s to
3590 is planned or April 2007.
Initiation o new database or 3590-outputs.
Additional dis apaity will be installed.
Installation o additional 3590 and maintenane o
existing hardware will be undertaken.
