The crusades began in order to reunite the Christian church and to reduce feudal warfare. Crusades assisted in increasing the pace of change in Europe and reducing the isolation of the Middle Ages. The final crusades weakened the Byzantine Empire as the ideal of the crusades gave way to greed and political ambition.

Enduring Understanding: The Renaissance and its influence on the arts, sciences, and education brought about extensive changes in Europe in technology, religion, and culture.

The church played a role in everyday life. Humanism influenced European culture and thought. The Renaissance brought about great achievements in the arts and sciences as well as debates about religion. The church reform efforts shattered the power and prestige of the catholic church. Three ideas were at he core of Luther’s reforms. King Henry the VIII formed a new church for England because he disagreed with the Catholic churches laws and rules. There are a variety of reasons that individuals and nations seek to expand their economic, political, and cultural influence throughout parts of the world. Peoples and regions respond to political, economic, and cultural imperialism in a variety of ways. Ferdinand and Isabella led Spain as a forerunner in discovery of different lands. The Spanish abused the Native Americans’ land and rights for their own benefit. Expansion overseas brought about a commercial revolution that changed European economics. European monarchs knew political power relied on economic strength.

The clergy & nobility (first & second) estates enjoyed privileges that were not offered to the commoners or third estate. The popular ideas of the Enlightenment such as social justice & equality, led to more discontent with the Old Regime structure. Robespierre led the Reign of Terror during which those considered disloyal or enemies of France were convicted with little to no evidence. Napoleon crowned himself Emperor after overthrowing the Directory and consolidating many reforms of the revolution.
