The first week of May is Correctional Officer’s Week where we were able to bring forward those in our office who are mostly unseen but do extremely valuable work in keeping our communities safe inside the walls of our Detention and Work Release facilities. May 15th each year is Law Enforce- ment Memorial Day and the week surrounding it is known as Police Week across the country. Agencies take part in numerous activities to remember he officers, deputies and others who have sacrificed their lives for their communities. And also to honor the families of these deputies, officers and others who live each day with a hole in their heart and empty seat at the table. The SE Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation also took a stride toward building a Memorial to honor all the officers, deputies troop- ers and others who have lost their lives while serving our communities. The Memorial sign was erected and unveiled at Soldiers Field Memorial Park. I am so proud of our Office, its mem- bers, their families and our communi- ties. We have been busy with Correc- tional Officer and Police Weeks, ef- forts by many in our Towards Zero Death campaign and our DARE kids and their deputies working hard in our schools to convey the importance of being safe and responsible for our actions. 2018 Corrections and Law Enforcement

Memorial Weeks Captain Macey Tesmer and Laura Collins

National Correctional Officer Week—The week of May 6, staff

in the ADC were thanked for their work as Correctional Officers.

Correctional Officers are the unseen individuals who do hard,

and often dangerous work protecting our communities and the

people in their care. This week was designed to honor

the work that they do and bring awareness to who they are. There were several

videos highlighting our Correctional Officers on our Facebook page.

The week prior to correctional officer week the County Board proclaimed May 7 -

13 as Correctional Officer Week. During Correctional Officer Week, Detention

Deputies were treated to several days of treats provided by contractors, other

Sheriff’s Office staff and civilians.

National Police Week—The week of May 13 - 29 is known as National Police Week

as dedicated by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. On May 15, Olmsted County

Sheriff’s Office along with law enforcement from around the state, remembered

the fallen and honored those who serve at the State Law Enforcement Memorial

at the Capitol.

On May 18, Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office joined the Rochester Police

Department and other southern MN law enforcement agencies, retired law

enforcement, community members, and families of fallen officers to remember

our own at a memorial program at Soldier’s Field.

Sue Lange was our featured speaker this year and

shared her family’s and the City of Claremont and

Dodge County community’s loss, when Chief Greg Lange

EOW: 7-5-1998 was killed during a domestic incident

where he was attempting to prevent one of two brothers

from seriously injuring or killing a young woman.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped us

honor our fallen heroes.

Members of High Point Church and Retired Sheriff Brand

dropped off fruit, bread and cookies that were generously

donated by Great Harvest Bread in honor of Police Week.

A sign announcing the future home of the SE MN Law Enforce-

ment Memorial was unveiled after the Law Enforcement

Memorial. Watch for fundraisers and how to get involved!

Newly certified K9 trainer Deputy Ryan Mangan

Sergeant Chris Wallace

Deputy Mangan has been a K9 handler for the past 7 years and is cur-rently handling K9 Rajko. During the last 13 weeks Deputy Mangan attended St. Paul’s 2018 K9 academy as an assistant trainer to become a certified trainer. This year’s class graduated 20 new handlers along with their K9 partners. During his 13 weeks, Deputy Mangan shadowed current trainers to learn the skills needed to be a trainer. As time went on Deputy Mangan began to take over as a lead trainer in small groups during instruction and eventually was leading the instruction to the new handlers in class. Deputy Mangan becomes only the 3rd trainer in Sher-iff’s Office history joining an elite group including Chief Deputy Howard and retried Chief Deputy Mark Darnell. Myself, Sgt. Wallace, and the K9

team welcome Deputy Mangan back as our new trainer and look forward to him sharing his knowledge he has gained and keeping our team on the leading edge of training.

DARE Winner Throws First Pitch

Gianna B. from Byron Middle School, whose DARE poster was

chosen as the 1st place poster in the State, was joined by her

DARE Deputy and Byron School Liaison Deputy Jon Strum at a

Twins game recently where she was honored with the first

pitch. Congratulations, Gianna!

Toward Zero Deaths Campaign

Toward Zero Deaths kicked off their seat-belt campaign that runs through June 3rd and took their annual regional photos in Rochester, Minnesota on May 21st.

First Responder Night at Rochester Honkers Baseball was a great opportunity for first

responders to interact with the community and promote Toward Zero Deaths activities. #BuckleUp #ClickItOrTicket

Look for more news on this next month when area depu-ties and officers are recognized for their traffic safety edu-cation efforts at the Commissioner’s Luncheon. PLEASE buckle up!
