My name is Matthieu Vollmer, the current president of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). I am currently serving my second term as president. Over the last two years, our organization has made tremendous improvements. I’d like to highlight a few of those accomplishments which include sending a chapter record of 12 students to the PRSSA National Conference in Orlando, FL, consecutively increasing our membership over the last four semesters with a total of 35 paid members to-date, bringing in eight guest speakers this spring, submitting a bid to host a regional conference, rebranding the organization on Public Relations Student Society of America UW-Stevens Point Chapter Spring 2012 Issue campus, and restructuring our campaign activities by establishing application process outlined in new constitutional amendments. There is no doubt that this organization will continue to grow and facilitate a positive environment which fosters student advancement both in the classroom and in the workplace. We are very proud of the organization we have developed and grown to love; however, we are continually pursuing additional opportunities with forward thinking. Please take the time to read through the additional sections of the newsletter for more details on our past, current and future activities. Sincerely, Matthieu T. Kick-Off MeetingThe spring semester 2012 kick-off meeting was held on Wednesday, February 15 in the Legacy Room of the D.U.C. Forty students attended the meeting. New members were welcomed and had the opportunity to meet current members and learn more about PRSSA.

The meeting began with a few announcements and then a presentation about what PRSSA is by president Matthieu Vollmer. The presentation covered a brief history of PRSSA, the difference between paid and non-paid membership, events such as guest speakers, conferences and campaigns. After the presentation, members split up into groups for an ice-breaker activity to learn more about one another.

“It was great to see such a good turn out for the kickoff meeting. I really enjoyed meeting the new members,” said vice president Sami Sauerman.

Anyone who did not attend the spring kick-off meeting is still welcome to join at any time. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Legacy Room of the D.U.C.

“Let passion fuel the profession.”

Interviewing 101At the March 7th meeting, Professor Rhonda Sprague gave us some valuable interviewing tips. Here are some of the things she covered:

1) Be confident, not arrogant.

2) Check websites, online databases or call someone from the company to research the company and position.

3) Know your strengths and weaknesses. State weaknesses in a way that shows you have learned from them or adapted. Take time to practice the answers to this question.

4) Don’t speak negatively about former employers.

5) Be very careful with jokes.

6) Always dress professionally.

7) Never chew gum, send text messages, answer phone calls, play with hair or jewelry, appear bored or flirt with the interviewer.

This semester, our chapter is working on campaigns for two clients: Information Technology (IT) and the Student Government Association (SGA). Account executives for each account were chosen on March 27.

The purpose of the IT campaign is to educate students and faculty on information security topics such as phishing, hacking and Internet fraud.

“I hope to continue to build the positive relationship our campaign has with its clients as well as accomplish the goals we have of increasing campus awareness of information security,” said account executive Kathryn Weast.

A new client of PRSSA this semester is SGA. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of the new Wisconsin voter ID laws and encourage students to vote.
