The Committee meets regularly with BrightView and walks our properties to see what needs to be addressed. Some residents have irrigation systems but fail to use them due to costs; other residents overwater, which is equally bad. These situations may cause problems that cannot be corrected by BrightView. We are currently negotiating with BrightView to increase the services they provide, including building up the turf. Bear in mind that nature can affect the outcome and that its impossible to eliminate all weeds, some of which require very expensive treatments. We will continue to work with BrightView to provide the best possible service and, with added treat- ments, the lawns should improve. In the next few weeks construction work on the retaining walls will begin. This is a major expenditure and even though we have the money, please note that funds will have to be replaced for future repairs. I would like to thank the finance committee for their hard work in preparing the 2018 budget for our Community. Note from the President

The Heritage Pines Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 30 at 6:30 pm. We are meeting at the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church located at 2220 High House Road.

At a recent Elite Management function, I had an opportunity to speak with several Board members of other subdivisions. It appears that landscaping is a common problem regardless of the company they have contracted with. Landscaping is a difficult, labor intensive and weather- related area. While we have had some problems with BrightView, we are fortunate to have an outstanding Grounds Committee that works closely with BrightView to resolve issues. The Committee meets regularly with BrightView and walks our properties to see what needs to be addressed.

We have a procedure in place to help resolve residents’ issues, some of which are the result of oversight or shortcomings by BrightView; others clearly are not their fault. In either case the residents’ issues are placed on a “concerns list” and the committee, with BrightView’s help, seeks to resolve them.

Some residents have irrigation systems but fail to use them due to costs; other residents overwater, which is equally bad. These situations may cause problems that cannot be corrected by BrightView.

We are currently negotiating with BrightView to increase the services they provide, including building up the turf. Bear in mind that nature can affect the outcome and that it’s impossible to eliminate all weeds, some of which require very expensive treatments. We will continue to work with BrightView to provide the best possible service and, with added treat-ments, the lawns should improve.

In the next few weeks construction work on the retaining walls will begin. This is a major expenditure and even though we have the money, please note that funds will have to be replaced for future repairs.

I would like to thank the finance committee for their hard work in preparing the 2018 budget for our Community. They put in a lot of time and effort all year to ensure our finances are in excellent shape.

Please be careful in and around the Community, as there will be a lot of construction equipment around.

USO Donations Many of you may recall a prior Heritage Pines program where the speaker provided us with information pertaining to the services offered by the USO to active and retired members of the military traveling through the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. As the arrival and departure point for North Carolina’s six major bases, RDU welcomes nearly 2,000 service members each month. The USO has a number of features offered to our service members including complimentary snacks and beverages. You may assist the USO with this much needed endeavor by placing a donation of cookies, gum, candy, snack packs, books, etc. into a box That will be in the clubhouse lobby as of November 1. If you would prefer to make a monetary gift to the USO, please look for the labeled jar that will be in the clubhouse office. After our Veteran’s Day event on Friday, November 10 at 10:00 am, a member of our community will deliver these tokens of appreciation to the USO Center at RDU. Thank You.

Comedy Night Sabastian Returns!!! Last summer, many of your neighbors had a ‘laughing out loud’ good time enjoying Sebastian Maniscalco on the big screen at the clubhouse in his

premier comedic performance titled ‘Aren’t You

Embarrassed’. We’re delighted to tell you that he’s back in another DVD-‘What’s Wrong With People’- a routine that does include some Adult Humor. While table snacks and drinks will be provided, you’re invited to BYOB of choice to add to the evening’s enjoyment. The show will be on November 4 at 7pm and the cover charge is $2.25 per person. Tech Talk with Lila What to Do Before You Donate Your Computer

So you’ve got an older computer (or tablet or smartphone) that you don’t use anymore--but it still works and you just want to get rid of it. What do you do to make sure none of your personal information is left on it before you either donate it or junk it? Or how and where can you donate it so it might be refurbished for the less fortunate or any useful parts recycled? On Saturday, November 4 from 9:00 -10:30 am we’ll review some of the things you should do before donating/scrapping any electronic device and then we’ll review the options for “final disposal”… either toss or donate. See you then!

As much as we look forward to spring & summer, it’s always nice after many months of summer heat to have some fall weather. Leaf removal will take place from November through January. Below are a few items you can expect during the leaf season. • During early leaf drop we will naturalize the

leaves by chopping them up with the mowers so that the leaf matter decomposes in the soil, adding nutrients back into the soil.

• The remainder of the leaf removal season we

will use 3 methods to remove the leaves. 1. Naturalizing leaves with the mowers.

2. Blowing the leaves into natural areas (this is

mostly used in back yards). 3. Blowing leaves to the curb and picking them up with the leaf vacuum 2 – 4 times per season. (this is mostly used in the front yards)

• The crew will go through all the front yards in the neighborhood first and then go through all the back yards once the fronts are finished.

In addition to leaf removal, BrightView will be shutting down the irrigation system for the common ground areas around the first or second week of December. Residents should shut down their irrigation systems and disconnect their backflows to the irrigation around that same time frame, weather depending. Keeping your irrigation on is very beneficial for the turf and especially for the seed we put down back in October.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and we appreciate you allowing us to be a part of your community.

Grounds Committee Report

Fall flowers are in place along the entrances to Heritage Pines and on the grounds of the Clubhouse. We hope you will enjoy them. LEAF REMOVAL: Read the BrightView article in this newsletter referencing the plan for leaf removal. By educating ourselves we know what is reasonable to expect. Please allow the workers to do their job uninterrupted. If you have a comment/concern call it in to the club-house, after reading the article. Do not approach the workers directly. There is an overall plan but weather can interfere with it. SPRINKLER SYSTEMS: Consider having your overall system checked for potential problems when you have your Back Flo shut off and removed. Aging sprinkler heads, faulty or nonexistent rain gauges are two big problems each season. OPT-IN/OPT-OUT forms for 2018 services will be included in the December Newsletter. Each homeowner must complete the form on a yearly basis and return it by the due date listed on the form. There will also be a brief IRRIGATION SURVEY for you to complete. CREPE MYRTLE limbing will begin early 2018. Refer to the BRIGHTVIEW CONTRACT to be sure your expectations are appropriate. It clearly LIMITS what the BrightView crew can prune (UP TO 12 FEET), with NO EXCEPTIONS. Suggestions for local landscape/tree companies to hire on your own can be found in the resident referral book located in the Clubhouse library. The Grounds Committee wishes to express our appreciation for the support of our HOA Board; and to wish all HP residents a memorable holiday season.

My name is Russ Willard and I am interested in running for the Heritage Pines Board of Directors. My lovely wife, Lynn and I have been married for fifty three years and have two children and seven grandchildren. We moved to Cary in 1993 from northern Virginia and decided it was that time in our life to downsize and thus we moved to Heritage Pines in 2007. I have volunteered and been actively involved in various activities at Heritage Pines. I’m currently filling the vacated Board position left by Bill Ketchabaw. I enjoy working out, golfing, bicycling, tennis and especially the people who comprise our Heritage Pine Community.
