WHAT IS THE CORNELL NOTE METHOD?
• A system of note taking that enables students to focus the ideas of a lesson and help make sense of what they are learning
• Can be used in correlation with other note taking styles
HOW
• Have students outline their paper with the topic, if needed help them with the main idea or WALT.
• Include the vocabulary word(s)• Read the materials together as a class first, then go back
to create the notes• Have students summarize at the end as a review
THINGS TEACHERS CAN DO
• Model the behavior of what you want them to do• Demonstrate how notes are taken• Divide up the note taking process into different phases
so that the methods can be readily absorbed• Explain and demonstrate why note taking is important• Offer students several different types of systems of
taking notes to give students autonomy and responsibility for themselves
