NOTES FOR PAOLA 5.19 General Paola, I have compiled a number of personal resources and sample documents for your perusal. While you are very fortunate to be working with Mary Welsh, know that I’d be happy to weigh in at any time, as helpful. UOI Resource Bins In your new classroom you’ll find plastic bins containing resources, organized by unit. I expect that you (plural) will want to inventory them prior to the start of each unit. Files In this digital world, the vast majority of resources are online or stored in the cloud, so there are few copies of things in the filing cabinets, save copies of resource texts, mostly for the PYPRevolution unit re the American Revolutionary War and American history generally. Furniture Most/all of the furniture in my portable is old. Frankly, I like old, rickety stuff. While you deserve all new furniture and carpet (and a new portable), it’s up to the budget and Sean to determine when and how it will happen. I’ve communicated the needs to him. I am leaving three couches, 34 foldup tables, and a couple of bookcases for your use, in addition to 4 large rectangular tables, and a large kidneyshaped conferencestyle table. My classroom has been organized around 5 tables/groups (rather than individual student desks), with student materials stored in a large, heavy builtin cubby unit that I inherited from the previous occupant. Here are a few photos of my classroom arrangement FYI: Note the large wall length bookcase by the windows, which has been used for storing student books. For years I’ve had students sitting at large rectangular tables, 5 tables, 5 students/table. Note the two couches on either side of the socalled library – a cushy area to meet and read.

NOTES  FOR  PAOLA  5.19

General

Paola,  I  have  compiled  a  number  of  personal  resources  and  sample  documents  for  your  perusal.  While  you  are  very  fortunate  to  be  working  with  Mary  Welsh,  know  that  I’d  be  happy  to  weigh  in  at  any  time,  as  helpful.

UOI  Resource  Bins

In  your  new  classroom  you’ll  find  plastic  bins  containing  resources,  organized  by  unit.  I  expect  that  you  (plural)  will  want  to  inventory  them  prior  to  the  start  of  each  unit.

Files

In  this  digital  world,  the  vast  majority  of  resources  are  online  or  stored  in  the  cloud,  so  there  are  few  copies  of  things  in  the  filing  cabinets,  save  copies  of  resource  texts,  mostly  for  the  PYPRevolution  unit  re  the  American  Revolutionary  War  and  American  history  generally.

Furniture

Most/all  of  the  furniture  in  my  portable  is  old.

I  am  leaving  three  couches,  3-‐4  fold-‐up  tables,  and  a  couple  of  bookcases  for  your  use,  in  addition  to  4  large  rectangular  tables,  and  a  large  kidney-‐shaped  conference-‐style  table.  My  classroom  has  been  organized  around  5  tables/groups  (rather  than  individual  student  desks),  with  student  materials  stored  in  a  large,  heavy  built-‐in  cubby  unit  that  I  inherited  from  the  previous  occupant.

Here  are  a  few  photos  of  my  classroom  arrangement  FYI:

Note  the  large  wall  length  bookcase  by  the  windows,  which  has  been  used  for  storing  student  books.                                                      For  years  I’ve  had  students  sitting  at  large  rectangular  tables,  5  tables,  5  students/table.    Note  the  two  couches  on

either  side  of  the  so-called  library  –  a  cushy  area  to  meet  and  read.

Note  the  large  built-in  cubby  unit  beside  the  door.  The  wooden  unit  weighs  like  a  zillion  pounds  and  I  opted  not  to

try  to  move  it.  Note  the  line  of  folding  tables  along  the  rear  wall  of  the  classroom:  lots  of  surface  for  storage/display.  The  bins  beneath  the  folding  tables  are  the  storage  bins  organized  by  UOI.

Supplies

I’ve  left  a  big  bin  of  supplies  for  you,  everything  from  sidewalk  chalk,  to  extra  rulers,  calculators,  etc.,  etc.  The  school  has  a  nice  teacher  supply  area  in  the  office  with  most  thins  you’ll  need  want.

The  following  posters  are  in  the  room,  rolled  and  bundled:
