St. Kieran Catholic Church Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 28, 2018 Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us. — Psalm 95:6 Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We are reminded that God calls prophets from every generation and that the preeminent prophet was Jesus Christ. The prophet has a responsibility to speak the word of God to their world. Prophets are oftentimes annoying as they tell us things we don’t want to hear, or at least don’t want to hear right now. Dorothy Day spoke of the poor as brothers and sisters. Archbishop Oscar Romero spoke of unjust decisions those who governed placed upon the people. Dr. King spoke out against racial prejudice and the effects he had on society. Prophets rise up and help us correct problems in our society. What are the prophets today telling us? This year the theme for the Annual Catholic Appeal is “Come, Follow Me”. Jesus calls each of us to take up the work of justice and peace in our world that he highlighted. The Annual Catholic Appeal does that through lay and religious catechesis and for- mation. It is used to strengthen families and create strong communities of faith. It is used for education and faith formation of children and youth and their teachers. And it also helps those around the world who suffer from natural disasters and war. By now many of you have received the Appeal material in your homes and I encourage you to make a pledge to this worthy campaign. You can either send in your gift or in the next couple of weeks we will have our parish appeal at Mass. The parish appeal at St. Kieran will be on February 3rd and 4th, and at St. Agnes it will be held on February 10th and 11th. Thank you all in advance for your generosity. This week we celebrate Catholic Schools week in United States. It is a chance to celebrate the tremendous contributions that Catholic Education has made to education in our country at every step of a child’s formation; primary, secondary and universities. This week we have many events planned at St. Agnes and invite parishioners of both St. Agnes and St. Kieran to join us for some of the events. I think two great options is the Heritage Pot Luck Open House on Wednesday. It begins at 6:30 PM and goes until 8:00 PM. Everyone is asked to bring their favorite dish to share with friends and family from the school. The school will also be open so that new families can have a low pressure look at what St. Agnes does. The second event is the all school mass on Thursday morning at 10:00 AM. Weekly the children meet to celebrate the Eucharist and this Thursday will be a celebration of the children’s special person. Each child is encouraged to bring a special person to mass and they will stay to share lunch with the student. It is also a chance to thank our donors for all of their help in making the school great. Come join us for this mass and I assure you will be impressed. Finally, put these dates in your calendar. The St. Kieran Women’s club will be hosting their Mardi Gras on Friday, February 9th. St. Agnes will be hosting their Spaghetti Dinner on March 4th. And both parishes will be hosting a Women’s retreat on March 10th and 11th. Check out the bulletin for more details. Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 28, 2018

Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us.

— Psalm 95:6

Notes from Fr. John

T oday we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We are reminded that God calls prophets from every generation and that the preeminent prophet was Jesus Christ. The prophet has a responsibility to

Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come, Follow Me”

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme for 2018 is “Come, Follow Me.” Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me.” After our parish goal of $ $21,533 is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

NO BAPTISMS DURING LENT

According to the liturgical documents, no baptisms will be celebrated during the season of Lent, except in a medical emergency. This means that the last Sunday that baptisms can be celebrated before Lent begins is February 4, 2018. We do have Baptismal Sundays set up for February 4 at 11:30 AM. To have an infant baptized, you must have at least one parent who is Roman Catholic and at least one sponsor (godparent) who is a ful-ly initiated Roman Catholic. Also, if this is your first child, you must attend a Baptismal Preparation class. Baptisms are celebrated by our deacons on a rotating basis. If you have special circumstances or wish to celebrate a baptism, please call the Rectory Office anytime during normal business hours, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at (708) 755-0074.
