T oday we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The days of preparation and waiting are almost over. Isaiah tells us that there will be a sign when the time of fulfillment comes. A virgin will give birth to a

child, and he will be named Emmanuel. In the Gospel of Matthew, we begin to once again hear the story that will play out over the Christmas season. Joseph, like Mary, is a God-fearing man. He finds out that Mary is pregnant and decides to divorce her quietly. But like Mary, an angel speaks to Joseph in a dream and he listens to what the angel commands. He will be faithful to God. We too are asked to be faithful to God. We are to open ourselves to God’s will for each of us. When we do, the miracles of Christmas will occur. Today, we will set aside time for those who will have a “Blue Christmas.” For many, because of personal circumstances, Christmas will not be a time joy. The loss of a loved one, illness, distance from family, etc. can make the holidays hard to bear. With this in mind, the church will be open this

morning and afternoon from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM for quiet prayer and reflection. At 12:30 PM, we will end this prayer time with a short service. Please join us if you would like. This week, Religious Ed will have their last class before the holiday. St. Agnes School will also have an early dismissal on Wednesday as they prepare for their Christmas break. Religious Education classes will resume in the new year on January 10th. School begins again on January 4th. The Christmas mass schedule at

St. Kieran is 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM on Christmas Eve and 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM on Christmas Day. The masses over the holiday can be crowded, so plan ahead as you celebrate with your family and your parish family. Because New Year’s is on a Sunday, we will have a normal weekend schedule for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day. We hope to see you and your family at our celebrations. Finally, there will be a combined Epiphany concert on January 8th at 2:00 PM. The concert will include the choirs

from St. Agnes, St. Kieran, and St. Irenaeus. As the season winds down, please join us for this joyful celebration.

Parish News & Events

December 2016 Dear Friend of St. Kieran’s Church, The St. Kieran Women’s Club organization has been an important part of the Chicago Heights community for the past 54 years. The women’s club was originally established to serve the members of St. Kieran Parish as well as surrounding communities. Our work provides financial and personal support to St. Kieran Parish, the St. Kieran religious education department, the St. Kieran Cares program and the works founded by Catholic Charities. In the community we have supported; P.A.D.S, the American Cancer society, and local food banks. Every year we struggle to decide what support we can fund because of our financial limitations. Yearly we receive over fifty requests for financial support and turn down 2/3’s of those requests. It is our goal to be able to fulfill an additional number of requests this year. Your support matters With your generosity and support, the St. Kieran Women’s club can continue to provide additional financial support for programs within our parish and throughout the community. This year, funds raised at the our Mardi Gras will be used to continue to support programs such as the ones mentioned above, as well as the many additional programs asking for our assistance. Enclosed you will find a sponsorship/silent auction donation form that outlines the details. 2017 Mardi Gras This year we will be holding a Mardi Gras event on February 25, 2017. This event will be open to the members of St. Kieran Parish and the surrounding communities, and is our organizations main fundraiser for the year. We are seeking sponsors for this event as well as items to be used in our raffle baskets. We hope you will consider supporting the Women’s Club this year and help us make a difference in the lives of many. On behalf of the St. Kieran Women’s Club and parish we would like to thank you for your support. Please know that your donation, at any level, is greatly appreciated and will be used to support programs in St. Kieran church and throughout the community. Please reply no later than January 9 2017 for appropriate acknowledgment of your support. If you have any questions, please contact a member of our Executive Board.
