NOVEMBER 11, 2018 32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOTES FROM FR. TOM 40 Hours Devotion and Surprise Speaker D ear Parishioners great news! With the help of the Worship Com- mittee, I have decided to bring back the 40 Hour Eucharistic Devotion this year! Beginning on Friday, Nov 30th and continuing through Sun Dec 2nd, the Blessed Sacrament will be solemnly exposed for adoration for a total of 40 Hours. It will be a time of prayer and graces for our parish! We will have the incredible privilege of hearing the story and spirituality of Servant of God, Father Walter Ciszek SJ given by one of our own: Mr. John DeJak, president of Fr. Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor. Mr. John Dejak has studied the life and writings of Fr. Walter for some 7 years, and recently co-edited a book published by Ignatius Press called: “With God in America; The Spiritu- al Legacy of an Unlikely Jesuit.” Many of you may be familiar with Fr. Walter Ciszek from his book: “He Leadeth Me” or “With God in Russia” where he tells the story of his 23 years in prison and labor camps of Soviet Russia. Fr. Walter, an American priest, persevered in faith and in his vocation under un- speakable atheistic circumstances. Not only was his spirit not broken but he was able to minister to many Russians and others in secret! We can all gain from the story of Fr. Walter and his witness of faith in difficult circumstances! I think it will make for a fascinating theme as we begin the season of Advent. So what is the 40 Hours Devo- tion? As I said, a time of continuous devotion before the Blessed Sacra- ment for 40 hours, minus the times of Sun or daily Mass or talks when the Monstrance is reposed in the tabernacle. Public adoration of the Blessed Sacrament derives its power from the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which connects us with the eternal sacrifice of our Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament outside of Mass has been highly recommended by the Church, since Vatican Coun- cil II, as a way to grow in our appreciation of the Mass and the Eucharist. The number “40” has always signified a sacred time in our faith: Noah waited 40 days for the waters to recede, the Jews wan- dered in the desert 40 years, Jesus fasted and prayed 40 days before his public ministry. Moreover, The 40 Hours Devotion remembers the traditional “40-hour-period” from our Lord’s burial until the resurrec- tion. The 40 Hours Devotion is almost like a parish mini-retreat, often with a speaker, and extra opportunities for confession. 1 The history of this devotion goes back to the 16th century in Italy! It was in Milan, around 1530, when the city was faced with an imminent Muslim invasion, that the archbish- op requested a prayer day and night in front of the Blessed Sacrament in all the churches in the city! The prayers were heard, and the devo- tion spread quickly. Great saints such as St. Philip Neri and St. Igna- tius of Loyola spread the devotion. The Devotion was historically offered for such themes as: protec- tion from evil and temptation, reparation for our own sins and for the poor souls in Purgatory, deliver- ance from political, material, or spiritual calamities. 2 In the United States, it was St. John Neumann, bishop of Philadelphia, who orga- nized and fostered the 40 hour devotion in the late 1800’s when there was strong Anti-Catholicism continued on inside

Not only was his spirit not broken but he was able to minister to many Russians and others in secret! We can all gain from the story of Fr. Walter and his witness of faith in difficult circumstances! will make for a fascinating theme as we begin the season of Advent.

So what is the 40 Hours Devo-tion? As I said, a time of continuous devotion before the Blessed Sacra-ment for 40 hours, minus the times of Sun or daily Mass or talks when the Monstrance is reposed in the tabernacle. Public adoration of the Blessed Sacrament derives its power from the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which connects us with the eternal sacrifice of our Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection. in the city. In face of great fears of violence to the Blessed Sacrament, St. John Neumann persevered in holding the devotion, and its success spread to other US dioceses!3 I have no doubt that great graces await our parish through this devotion. It is not an easy time in the Church or in our Country and society. In many ways we faced with adversity and evils that are frightening. Let this be a time of personal growth and blessing for each of us! Please plan to attend and participate in hourly prayer before the Blessed Sacrament at the Devotion. Prepare yourself spiritually by reading Fr. Walter Ciszek’s great book “He Leadeth Me” which is available free of charge online! Just go to the website formed.org and type in the password for our

parish: “W9M3Q6“ then click Search and type “Walter Ciszek” The book “He Leadeth Me” will pop up and you can read it right off your screen for free!

May God bless our speaker and our plans for this Advent. ~Fr Tom 1 Catholic Straight Answer,: Online at: http://catholicstraightanswers.com/what-is-the-40-hours-devotion/ 2 Ibid. 3 Ibid.

Advent Book Study - Coming Soon! It is not uncommon for Catholics to be a few days away from Christmas and regret a lost opportunity to enter deeply into the spirituality of Advent – those important weeks prior to Christmas that bring clarity and light to when “the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” Don’t let that happen to you. Join fellow parishioners Sunday nights of Advent at OSP as we reflect on the book, “Meditations for Advent” by Bishop Jacques-Benigne Bossuet. He lived in 17th century France and is regarded as one of the best homilists ever. In this book he takes us into a deeper appreciation of creation, the

fall of man, our need for a redeemer, reflections on Mary, St. John the Baptist and the birth of Christ. This promises to be a fruitful journey through Advent. We will meet each Sunday evening of Advent in the basement of the parish hall from 6:30 – 8:30 starting with snacks and fellowship, book discussion and end with partly chanted Night Prayer (with our youth group) in the Church. The book is available for purchase for $5 (half-off the purchase price) in the parish office or after Masses November 17th and 18th. This is an excellent book with 40 deeply reflective daily meditations for Advent that take us deeper into the mysteries of our faith. Get your copy soon! Contact Gary Perrydore at [email protected] for more information.

Free on FORMED.org He Leadeth Me is the deeply moving personal story of one man's spiritual odyssey and the unflagging faith, which enabled him to survive the horrendous ordeal that wrenched his body and spirit to near collapse. Ciszek spent some 23 agonizing years in Soviet prisons and the labor camps of Siberia. He Leadeth Me is a book to inspire all Christians to greater faith and trust in God--even in their darkest hour.
