Notes from Mr. Hostetler, our Principal… We are back in the swing of things here at MES. We focus on nine Lifeskills throughout the year. We pick one Lifeskill to work on each week. We try to focus on each Lifeskill four times a year. The Lifeskills we focus on are integrity, courage, initiative, perseverance, organization, effort, responsibility, patience, and friendship. **On another note, we believe that attendance and punctuality are very important
at MES. Please try your best to have your children at school on time. I know this can
be difficult if you are commuting, but we do ask you to try your best. Our start times
are listed below. Thank you for your efforts.

News from our Nurse, Mrs. Gleim: Flu season is hitting our area hard! This is just a remind-er that your child MUST STAY HOME for 24 hours after a fe-ver breaks (below 100.0) or their last episode of diarrhea or vomiting. Please do not give your child Tylenol and send them to school. They are still contagious even though they may feel a little better. Thanks for doing your part to keep our whole school healthy.
February is National Heart Month. We have a lot of activities planned to teach students the importance of keeping their heart healthy and strong. The MES Health Committee is again sponsoring our Family Fitness Challenge! We hope you will participate and get active with your kids. Watch for the tracking sheet with more details that will be sent home lat-
News from our Counselor, Mrs. Marks:
Kindergartners reviewed how we can tell how others are feeling based on facial expressions (specifically focusing on mouths, eyes and eyebrows), and we learned about the feelings surprised, scared, disgusted and nervous. We are able to be a better friend when we recognize how other people feel and understand that the things that we say and do have an impact on how other people feel. We also read the story , My Many Colored Days , by Dr. Seuss.
1st graders learned that sometimes feelings can change, and that we have the power to influence that with positive self-talk. We read the story, The Way I Feel , by Janan Cain. We also practiced focusing , and re-membering in a fun way.
2nd graders read the story, Zero , by Kathryn Otoshi and had a community circle to discuss what we learned from the story. Students learned that we are each valuable, and stand out more by being our-selves. We also read The Peace Book by Todd Parr and talked about how we can find peace by being ourselves, feeling good about ourselves and by helping others.
3rd graders completed our discussion of Unstoppable Me! 10 Ways to Soar Through Life by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer. We also learned about sizes of problems, sizes of our reactions to problems and how the size of our reaction should match the size of our problem.
Middlebury Elementary students will have the opportunity to help turn the world kind as we participate in Random Acts of Kindness Week February 11-17. I hope you will join the fun at home! Tara Marks, School Counselor [email protected], 574-825-2158 ext. 5393
Kindergarten Roundup It’s that time of year again to start thinking of spring (even though
the weather is not cooperating yet). KINDERGARTEN ROUND-
UP will be held on Tuesday, April 17th. It’s time to gather names
and information from our incoming students. Children must be
five years of age on or before August 1, 2018. If you have al-
ready given this information, it is not necessary to compete the
form. Please return this form to the classroom teacher or school
office. If you have any questions, please call the school office at
825-2158.
Two Hour Delays: If a two hour delay occurs on a late start Wednesday, then pretend it is a normal start
day, and school will begin two hours later. Children will need to be in their class by 9:40. School will
begin at 9:40 on a two hour delay Wednesday.
Telephone Calls: Situations occur when there is a change in transportation. At the end of the school day,
it is extremely busy in the school office. Please call the school by 1:30 p.m. so we may get the message to
your student. Messages will not be taken after that time unless it is an extreme emergency. Please remem-
ber, if you know your child’s transportation arrangements in the morning, it is really helpful to send “A
Note to School” or “Transportation Memo” form that day. Lunch at School: Parents are welcome to join their child for lunch at school. Please let the office know be-
fore 9:00 AM if an adult plans to buy a school lunch. Also, if you are reserving the round table in the cafe-
teria it is only for the child and their family, no friends. Please call the office if you would like to reserve
the round table.
Before School Supervision: Parents please do not drop your child off before 7:25 (7:50 on Wednesday).
Drop off for breakfast eaters is 7:20 (7:45 on Wednesdays). We want to make sure all children are super-

Breakfast Logic Breakfast is a good thing! When students need to take achievement tests, schools strongly urge them to eat breakfast first on testing days. Why?
Because we know that when students eat breakfast, they per-form better and are better able to concentrate. Yet on “normal” days, many students fail to eat breakfast; they’re too busy, too tired, or just don’t know what to eat. Let’s help stu-dents to perform better every day, by making sure they eat a healthy breakfast at home or at school.
News from Mrs. Frey, Our Physical Education Teacher: JRFH, Jump Rope for Heart, information was sent out in January. Keep up the good work rais-ing funds to help children and adults with heart issues. Our goal this year is to raise $5,000.00. The kids are very excited about the scare squad characters they can earn. JRFH ends on February 12th. Also, Run the Halls will be starting February 14th and end March 22nd. This will open to all 2nd and 3rd graders. I will be looking for a few parent helpers for this. More information will be coming home soon.
Coordinated School Health News: On February 1st we will be having another Tasting
Table after lunch. The goal with Tasting Tables is
to encourage the students to try foods that they
may think they don't like or that they might not
be exposed to very often. After they try the food
they vote; thumbs up or thumbs down. This Tast-
ing Table we will be trying hummus! Previous
Tasting Tables the students have tried banana
chips and snow peas. Encourage your student to

Eyeglass Collection Box Have you gotten new glasses and don't know what to do with your old ones? MES now has a Li-on's Club eyeglasses collection box in our office where you can drop off your old or broken glasses. Members of the Lion's Club will gather them up, clean them and once a year take a trip to Mexico to distribute them to people who may never have been able to see clearly! Feel free to bring them

March Reading Madness 2018 Is Coming!
We know that improving reading skills help our children to be successful in many parts of
their lives. Now is the time to make the assist and encourage your student to read for
learning and pleasure. From March 2nd to March 26th, we are asking each student to
“hoop it up” and read at home. Reading logs will be sent home, March 2nd. Unlike the
NCAA basketball tournament our March Madness is not a “one and done.” We are chal-
lenging Kindergarten students, first and second graders to read 100 minutes a week. Third
grade students are challenged to “take it to the hoop” and read 150 minutes a week! Our
school goal is to reach 120,000 minutes of reading! Our March Reading Madness will be full of fun and priz-
es. As a school community we will celebrate and recognize those students with the most minutes read, the
best effort and the classroom with the highest total of minutes read! The Monster Message board will be here
again highlighting top readers! Players from the Northridge High School boys and girls basketball team will
read to us and help us celebrate in the gym!
