It is unfortunate that International Day has had to be postponed due to poor weather but we hope to have
many photos for you in our next edition. The PTO, teachers, parents and students have worked very hard to
organize a great day for the UAS community. The day will be rescheduled soon. I look forward to seeing you
there.
It is less than a week before the senior students begin their mock exams. All the teachers, including Dr.
Brandt, Mr. Terry and I wish all of them the best. I am confident that each and every student has been dili-
gent in their preparation and will be confident walking into each exam. The Creative Arts seniors have been
very busy preparing their IB musical recitals and theatre productions. Congratulations on the splendid per-
formances so far.
The grade 7-10 students sat for their ACER tests and results are expected in a few months. I would like to
thank Mr Kuestermann for planning and organizing the test sessions along with the counseling team who
also contributed to the smooth running of the tests.
There have been many sporting events these last few weeks and our students have had many successes. A
full outline of the ECC tournaments is available in the article by Mr. Michalik our Athletics Director. Congratu-
lations to all of the teams.
The annual Aquathon was held this week. Thank you to the teachers who planned the event, Ms. Smith, Ms.
Briske and Ms. Isse and also to all the students and teachers who participated to raise much needed funds
for our sponsored overseas schools and orphanages. We also had a very successful track and field day with
high participation and team spirit. I have included a small selection of photos from both events for you.

Counseling/College Advising
1) UNIVERSITY PLANNING AND PREPARATION PORTAL:
This portal is now fully loaded with information related to university
and college research and application information. There are folders
specific for the USA, Canada, Australia, Britain and for universities
in the UAE, for UAS students in grade 10/11 and for UAS seniors.
There is also information that can be easily downloaded or viewed
about standardized tests such as SAT, ACT, TOEFL and IELTS. UAS
students and parents are encouraged to do their research when it
comes to selecting a university to apply to and to be aware of appli-
cation requirements and deadlines. It is never too early to start
doing your university research!
2) 2012 SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE:
The 2012 Summer Program Guide PDF will be available on the UAS
website and on the University Preparation and Planning portal next
week. The purpose of this guide is to inform UAS parents and high
school students of the wide range of summer opportunities availa-
ble worldwide to enhance students‘ learning in the classroom, expe-
riential education trips (similar to those offered during the school
year at UAS with World Challenge), language immersion programs
and academic bridge programs that are aimed for IB students.
Attending a summer program at a university or college is a great
way for students to get a taste of what college life is like and this
can enhance a student‘s college application. Many North American
institutions offer summer academic and sports programs. If your
son or daughter is interested in a particular university or college,
that school may offer some sort of summer experience program
that is not yet listed in this guide. You may also consider investigat-
ing social media websites such as Facebook and Youtube to find
out more information about a particular program as many service
providers use these sites for promotional purposes.
Please note that UAS does not specifically endorse or recommend
any of the programs listed in the guide. We provide these as a refer-
ral service only and are not responsible for validating the quality or
standard of the programmes offered. We would, however, be appre-
ciative of any feedback you could provide us with should you elect
to enrol your child in one of these options. This guide is a work in
progress: if you know of other programs, please contact the UAS
high school counseling office and we will add to this book for future
editions. Please check out the 2012 Summer Program Guide for
High School Students on the UAS website and the University Prepa-
ration and Planning Portal by February 28.
3) THE ―BUSINESS‖ OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT:
the hospitality industry ―business‖ has fared well in the recent glob-
al economic circumstances. Students and parents should consider
pursuing a bachelor or undergraduate degree in this quickly grow-
ing field as it is a huge global business, requiring business acumen,
multilingual skills and managerial training which can lead to excel-
lent, well-paying careers. There are many schools that offer fantas-
tic programs in this industry. The US Bureau of labor statistics
website:
―With the hospitality industry's growth rate increasing, the im-
portance of finding good employees, especially youth workers, is a
high priority. Historically, the hospitality industry has drawn heavily
from the youth labor pool to meet their workforce needs, but in
recent years the industry has been left with an insufficient pipeline
of new workers to satisfy demand. Faced with a shrinking pipe-
line of workers, the hospitality industry is increasing its recruit-
ment efforts towards youth and developing targeted strategies
for previously untapped labor pools.‖ Source: http://

2) Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne (Switzerland)
As the first hospitality management college in the world, founded
in 1893, Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL), offers high-level
university studies to talented and ambitious students who are
aiming for top careers in the hospitality industry.
EHL‘s programmes (http://www.ehl.edu/eng/Study-at-EHL) lead
selected students to a wide range of management careers in the
hospitality, leisure and tourism industry as well as in related
fields that utilize hospitality expertise, such as banking, auditing,
real estate, asset and financial management, consulting, market-
ing, luxury products management, etc.
EHL will hold an information session in Dubai. This information
session will take place at the Burj al Arab on 16 March 2012
from 9 am until 1 pm. Interested high school students are invit-
ed to this event. To participate, kindly register in advance on.

The International Baccalaureate at UAS
Grade 12 Mock and IB Exams are right around
the corner. Here are some study suggestions
given by former graduates:
I am a student eager to do well on exams. What can I do?
Do not put off studying for your last examinations until the last
week. Touch base with those subjects for shorter amounts of
time between other subjects in the first week(s).
Build your break times into your plan. You will need a few after-
noons/evening/mornings off during the weeks to refresh. This
includes time for sleeping, exercising and relaxing.
Don‘t only study one subject per day. Put some variety in your
plan. Perhaps alternate those you enjoy more with others that
are tougher.
Study for your next exam in the last study session before that
exam.
Email teachers or set an appointment to clarify concepts with
which you struggle.
Set study sessions with other students. Be sure that these do
not devolve into social gatherings. If they are not productive,
excuse yourself to study alone.
Take a break from all technology. There is little need to search
information on the web at this point. Temporarily (or forever!)
disable facebook/twitter/bbm services, etc. These are thieves
of time and procrastination devices.
I am a parent eager to help my child do
well on the exams. What can I do?
Please help your child stay healthy
throughout the exams. They need to
eat sensibly (especially the morning of
an examination), get fresh air and exer-
cise and sleep regularly (approximately
8 hours/night or more).
Other suggestions . . .
Minimize distractions (noise, disruptions) during home study
Quiz him/her or ask him/her to explain something to you. This
helps reinforce understanding.
Set aside a study area that can be fixed for the 2 weeks of
Mocks and month of IB exams
Help him/her organize his/her resources for studying
Student Council
Help him/her outline a study plan
Transport him/her to study sessions
Invite other students over for a group review session
Any questions: Please contact Carinn Mariani, IB Coordinator,
This has been a busy month for Student Council with their very
own silhouette on the mural (Just Be!), blue and stylish. It has
been a pleasure working with the amazing ladies of the Fine
Arts Booster Club. On top of that we have been really excited
about the coming International day and have worked really hard
(along with a lot of different clubs) to make sure people visiting
us will have a lot of fun (It is even rumored that a magic show
will take place but…you will have to come and see us to know
more).
We also have a lot of projects coming up soon such as a talent
show, a joint dance with DIS and more. We will keep you updat-
ed on those.
Finally, we would like to congratulate Smita Sen and her team
of writers for an amazing job on the school newspaper, great
articles and a very professional looking design.

UAS COMMUNITY MURAL UNVEILING EVENT MARCH 15th, 7:00pm – 8:30pm
Save the Date!
Some walls seclude
They keep us out
They hold others in
Some walls separate
They’re built around hate
Ideas that destroy
Some walls are inside us
They feed on loneliness
They accentuate difference
But…
Some walls speak
They tell stories of people
Who are willing to try
To find common ground
Where others would fail
They create hope from vision
They let us share a space
To say what’s inside
In a language of color
And Love
And Unity:
A community that speaks
With a common voice
That shouts out: “I Care!”

Student of the Month:
Omar Al Mutawa
1. What CAS activities are you
currently participating in?
I'm organizing an upcom-
ing event (will be an-
nounced soon)
I'm going to be part of the
upcoming Slam Poetry
event
I'm a staff writer for the
school's new newspaper
I signed up for the Big
Brother Program (but I
haven't started it yet)
I go to the gym and with
the goal of burning a cer-
tain amount of calories in
a week, to ultimately enhance my endurance/physique on the
long run
I'm preparing for the Young Entrepreneur Competition (which I
participated in last
year)
Model United Nations (I'm part of the organizing committee for
the upcoming conference; I will be chairing there). I used meet
the team on a weekly basis but the juniors will be taking respon-
sibilities till MOCKs are over
I used to be in the Yearbook committee at the beginning of the
year, but now I all I do is submit the photos I have and design a
few pages of my choice due to pressure from school
2. What motivates you?
I'm passionate about what I do, and that's what "keeps me going". I
have a lot on my plate, so I can say that time management is the big-
gest obstacle. The mysterious event I'm organizing usually takes a
large team and duration of 1 year to organize; I'm doing that in a span
of 2 months and a half only. This is 'challenging' in a way, but things
are going good so far. My motivation for it is what drives me on to
persevere. MOCK exams are coming up and keeping up with all these
activities will be quite a milestone for me; it will prove that I have es-
tablished good time management skills (hopefully).
3. What have you gotten out of the CAS program?
What I want to achieve is successfully reach the personal goals I've
set. Overall, I want to be more involved in my community and I want to
pursue things that I‘m passionate about (outside class). If there is
one thing I'm glad the I.B. offers, it is the CAS program. I don't think I
would've been balanced in the three areas (Creativity, Action, Service)
without the program. The activities have helped me improve my skills.
For example, the YEC last year gave me a glimpse of the challenging
and competitive business world out there. It made me realize my
strengths and weaknesses in this field.

Athletics
Cross Country: 2012
proved to be a successful
cross country season for
our runners at UAS. We
had a talented group of 14
runners who showed their
commitment to the team by
attending daily morning
and afternoon practices
throughout the season;
including speed training
sessions and distance runs. Our more experienced runners took on
leadership roles to motivate and encourage some of our newer run-
ners. Together, this tight-knit, young group of athletes, persevered to
meet the challenges of the cross country expectations.
On Feb 11th , 2012 UAS hosted ECC for 6 schools at Mushrif Park.
Our cross country team runners proved that ‗hard work does pay off‘ as
they took to the challenges of the race course to compete in the 3km
races (u14s) and the 5km races (JV and V). The day was a success
and many of our runners broke their records from previous years, while
others got to experience a competitive race atmosphere for their very
first time. A special recognition goes to Leonel Barrigh and Patrick
Welch who placed 3rd and 4th in the Varsity boys race and to Abdullah
Arjomand and Christina Hanna who placed 2nd and 3rd in the u14s fun
run. We are so very proud of these exceptional young athletes who
have not only proven that they are ‗made for running‘, but also have
shown their coaches what it means to be part of a ‗team‘. Congratula-
tions to the UAS Cross Country runners: Abdullah Arjomand, Christina
Hanna, Obaid Almulla, Jorge Barrigh, Faris Warrayat, Leonel Barrigh,
Patrick Welsh, Gabe Baramaki, Selim Younes, Carlos Diaz, Khatab Al
Abid, Zade Baramaki, Andrew Welch, and Clara La Croix.
- Coach Syma Merchant
Varsity Football Teams competed in Oman for the ISAC tournament
from Jan. 25-29, hosted by the American British Academy and both
teams return as ISAC Champions!
It was a very exciting weekend overall! The girls did really well - they
suffered a crushing defeat in the first match against ABA, but came
back strong on day two and ended up sweeping the tournament!! Their
first game against Riyadh went into penalty kicks, where Brianna
Taormina was a force to be reckoned with in net and little 12-year-old
Cherifa Abou ElGhar scored the winning goal! It was an intense game!
Jenny Glaser got a yellow card in one game because she played a little
rough and Shinih Tuazon proved to be completely unstoppable, even
with her injuries. The girls played well together with a strong defensive
line, intensity and determination, even battling through several injuries
as well as sun stroke throughout. The final match against ABA for the
championship was very well
played - the girls were un-
stoppable and shut out
ABA's girls 3-0. A big upset
for the host school, but a
very exciting win for UAS!
- Coach Christine Pereira
The boys' games
were very enjoya-
ble to watch as
well - they have
such stamina
and such charis-
ma as a team
that it made the
matches very
exciting! There
were a few high-
lights there -
Hassan Jaafar
was able to outrun everyone around him because of his in-
credible speed, Andrew Tadros seemed to be dancing around
players because of his fancy footwork and Khalifa Almarri
jumped up in the air at one point to get the ball, flipped his
body so it was parallel to the ground, and kicked the ball in
mid air!! It was incredible! The whole team played really well
and also faced ABA in the final match which went into penalty
kicks. You would have been so proud to see them at the end
of the game - such intensity as the fans lined the pitch on one
side and the UAS girls and coaches lined the pitch on the
other. When they won, both the girls and boys rushed the field
and piled on top of one another in excitement! It was a great
moment!
Varsity Boys Football Team win ECC Championships (Feb. 10,
2012 at ACS-Abu Dhabi)
We won it! Yes, we did. I am very proud of these boys as they
played 2 really good games. The first game we beat DAA, 3-
1. The finals were against ACS, and that was an excellent
game. It went to overtime, 0-0, and we won it in penalty
kicks. Karim Bakir was the hero of the tournament. He
stopped two shots allowing us to confidently make all of
ours. There were a lot of people watching, as some parents
came down for the games. And they all agree that we de-
serve to win this tournament because we played football the
way it is supposed to be played. Playing the ball, intelligently,
with lots of guts, even though half of the team was sick. They
still gave it their all. They never gave up.
- Coach Fidel Padilla
Football ECC Scores for February
Our Varsity Girls football team finished the ECC season in 3rd
place. After their first match against ASD, which went into
overtime both teams were still tied at 1-1, yet ASD managed
to pull off the win in penalty kicks. The girls beat AISA in the
consolation game to secure 3rd place.

JV Boys ECC Champions:
Our JV Boys Football team
coached by Mr. Kuester-
mann and Mr. Al Ha-
wamdh finished 1st place
in the ECC this year. They were ranked 4th going into the tournament, and
managed to upset 1st ranked DAA in the opening match 1-0 and GWA in the
final 1- 0. Although our girl‘s team did not qualify for the tournament, they
played an incredible season under the leadership of Ms. Molly Jane Layton.
Our U14 Girls team un-
der the leadership of Ms.
Hughes and Ms. Marsh
led the girls to a 4th
place finish in ECC. The
girls played an amazing tournament, even scoring 4 goals on the 1st ranked
ACS. We eventually lost to ACS 6-4, but in the 2nd game went into overtime
and penalty kicks, with DAA winning on the sixth penalty kick.
Our U14 Boys team led by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence finished the season as the
Division 2 ECC Champions! They beat top ranked ASD 4-1 and AISA 5-2 in
round robin play, while pulling off a remarkable win once again in the final
match versus ASD 2 – 0.
