What is a locksmith anyway?
To those in the world who have never had the privilege of needing a locksmith, they
might not have any concept of all of what a locksmith really does. Some will conjure up an
image of an old fashioned lock and ancient skeleton keys. The locksmith comes along and
finds the right key and suddenly the lock is open like magic. Today that image of a locksmith
is outdated. Twenty-first century locksmiths are skilled sophiscated craspeople who deal
with a dizzying array of computer technologies that seem to change on a daily basis. A
locksmith can deal with everything from a car with a transponder in the key to some control
access or panic hardware with electric strike. We see everything going to electronics. Why
even our key machines are ge$ng more complicated with computer technology and a laser
reader for key duplicaon. Yes, the locksmith of today is in the know when it comes to
technology, but the locksmith that thinks that they can't learn "all that new stuff", will be
le in the dust. Think about it...
See you at the meeng.

NOTES FROM THE VPNOTES FROM THE VPNOTES FROM THE VPNOTES FROM THE VP
It works for me...
The other day I was removing the morse cylinder tail piece to
rekey the lock. The screws being ght and stripped - and in the
past I would try a punch or a drill to get rid of the head of the
screws, so I could remove the tail piece and save the plug. This
me I just turned the plug half way around and with a pliers I
broke the tail piece off and removed the bo0om part then the
screws came out with the pliers. Guess that would work even
without turning the plug, this way is just easier.

Programmable Combinaon Lock
The other day I found a money box - the kind of metal box with the money clips in
the top (inside) of the box. This one has a three wheel combo on the front. I tried the
wheels and while using the Weiser tool on the side of the wheel I found the flat
spots. Then by rotang wheels I could see the flat spots. These I lined up at the
very front, wrote down the numbers and made a list of numbers by adding
one number to the three wheels each me. This gave me 10 possible
tries. I used this as my work sheet. I used each number unl the box
opened, then set a new combo to all O's. Believe that is what I would
try first if have forgo0en the combo. So when this box is needed I can reset
the combo to what ever works. By Paul Arens, Colorado Springs, CO
The magic is in the magnets of course. The locking mechanism
within the cam-lock is very similar to that of a combinaon safe
lock. When the proper magnec key is used the brass disks within
the lock are magnecally rotated unl the notches in the disks are
properly aligned into the unlocked posion and then the key can
then be turned to operate the lock. This may worry you because
anyone can obtain a magnet, but Capitol makes the lock secure by
specifically posioning each magnet in an unique sequence that
only matches up to the magnec “key” that has the magnets within
it in the same special pa0ern.
It is amazing to see all the strides technology is taking to make
more secure locks available. Between bio-metric locks and keypad
locks and now this magnec lock, it seems like tradional keys and
keyways will soon become obsolete. One thing that will never fade
away will be the need for professionally trained locksmiths.

How to Adjust a Pneumac Door Closer on a Storm Door
By: Danny Lipford
We recently installed a storm door and are having problems closing
it. When we open the door and let go, it flies shut but then doesn’t
close all of the way? - Wanda
Hi Wanda,
There are two ways to
control a pneumac door
closer:
Adjusng the bracket that
a0aches the closer to the
door.
Turning the screw on the end of the closer that regulates the rate at
which the air is released from the cylinder.
If the door doesn’t close all the way, adjust the bracket:
Open the door and slide the stop out to hold the cylinder open.
Loosen the screws that a0ach the bracket to the door and move the
bracket further out (toward the door handle).
Or remove the pin that secures the cylinder to the bracket and move
it out to a hole further away.
If the door slams shut or closes too slowly, adjust the pneumac
cylinder:
To slow the closing, turn the screw on the end of the pneumac
cylinder clockwise.
To speed up the closing, turn the screw counterclockwise.
If adjusng doesn’t help, the closer may need to be replaced. Take
your old door closer with you to the home improvement center to
be sure the replacement will fit the hardware on your door. Some
pneumac door closers work be0er than others, so buy a quality
one.
Good luck with your project,
