The introduction slide will welcome learners to the workshop, introduce them to Marty, their online host, and set the scene for the workshop.

We’ll also explore the difference between a talent and a strength, and then we’ll look at the basic framework for strengths based advising. Pretraining: This slide introduces the pretraining requirements of the workshop. The pretraining exercise will familiarize participants with the StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment and their personal strengths themes. Participants will complete the assessment and experience assessment results first-hand.

The analogy of the flight attendant’s responsibility to first put on her air mask so that she can help others applies to strengths based advising. As an advisor, you will be at your best when you can identify, articulate and apply your strengths to your daily interactions. Also, by taking the assessment and learning about your talents, you will experience what you are asking your students to experience. Do you have what you need? Let’s get started!

Worked Example: The attached PDF copy on this slide is a step-by-step list of instructions with screen shots entitled, Taking the StrengthsFinder 2.0 Assessment Learners can print-out the instructions and read along as Marty walks them through the steps of getting online and gaining access to their assessment.

Simply roll your mouse over the speaker and pause and replay options will appear. For written instructions to follow along with, click on the PDF file located at the top left corner of your screen. Let’s go through the instructions together: 1) Log onto the Strengthfinder 2.0 website by clicking on the hyperlink on the lower left side of the page. 2) Once you are at the site’s home page, Click the access code button on the top right corner of the page. 3) In the back of your StrengthsFinder 2.0 book, locate the red access code packet; 4) Using a coin, scratch off the foil to reveal your code; 5) On the Registration page, enter your information in the available fields, and type your access code in the Access Code field at the bottom of the page. Then click Submit. 7) Follow the on-screen instructions to take the assessment. 8)You will have 20 seconds to respond to each item (approximately 30 minutes total). 9) Once you have completed the assessment, print out your Strengths Discovery and Action Plan. It may be helpful to keep your assessment results available throughout the workshop series.

Personalization: Marty engages in a conversation with learners by asking them to reflect on their strengths. When learners feel they are part of conversations, they are more apt to listen and respond with thoughtful answers. Marty also becomes visible when he shares his strengths and asked if the learners share common strengths with him.
