Tides -periodic rise and fall of the surface level

of ocean/lake waters

What causes tides? Tides are caused by the pull of gravity by

both the Moon and the SUN. Moon is more important because it is

closer.

It pulls on the land(earthquakes) and water

Also caused byrotation of Earth

Thus we have two high tides on Earth all the time.

The part of the Earth facing the moon The part of the Earth opposite the moon

There are two high tides and two low tides a day.

From high tide to high tide = 12 hours From high to low tide = 6 hours

Special Tides During New & Full Moons

Spring tides – very high tides that happen twice a month when sun, Earth, &moon are in line.

During Quarter phases Neap tides – moderate tides in which

the water level changes very little.

Sun & moon are at right angles to each other and cancel each gravitational pull.

Highest & lowest tides on Earth occur in Canada’s Bay of Fundy (50 feet)

Idea in future is to make electrical power by using the flow of tidal water. (clean power).
