    Notices and General Information

Introduction1. The year 2001 edition of the Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels is a complete

reprint of the 2000 edition, consisting of the nine (9) booklets as shown in Table 1. In thisregard, we would bring the following to the users attention:

    a) The title of PART 1 has been changed from General Provisions to Conditions ofClassification to more accurately reflect the contents.

    b) The purpose of the generic title ABS Rule Requirements for Materials and Weldingof PART 2 is to emphasize the common applicability of the requirements toABS-classed vessels, other marine structures and their associated machinery, andthereby make PART 2 more readily a common PART of various ABS Rules andGuides, as appropriate.

    c) For the subject 2001 edition, the Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels Part7: Operations and Maintenance was re-titled as the ABS Rule Requirements forSurveys After Construction Part 7. The purpose of this generic title is to reflect theexpanded contents of PART 7, as a result of including consolidated requirements forSurveys After Construction applicable to all types and sizes of vessels, barges andspecific shipboard arrangements/systems, etc., as specified in Part 7, Chapter 1,Section 1.

    2. The numbering system applied in the Rules is shown in Table 2. A comparison of the old1999 numbering system versus the 2001 numbering system is shown in Table 4 as a guidemap for users who are familiar with the previous existing Rules. However, excluded is Part 7 ABS Rule Requirements for Survey After Construction because its content has beensignificantly expanded as stated in 1c above.

    3. The primary changes from the 2000 edition of the Rules are identified and listed in Table 3.The effective date of the indicated Rule Changes is 1 January 2001, unless specificallyindicated otherwise.

    4. The effective date of each technical change since 1993 is shown in parenthesis at the end ofthe subsection/paragraph titles within the text of each Part. Unless a particular date andmonth are shown, (2001) refers to 1 January 2001, (2000) refers to 1 January 2000, (1999)refers to 12 May 1999, (1998) refers to 13 May 1998, (1997) refers to 19 May 1997, (1996)refers to 9 May 1996, (1995) refers to 15 May 1995, (1994) refers to 9 May 1994 and (1993)refers to 11 May 1993 effective dates.

    5. In Part 1 Conditions of Classification of the subject Rules, there is introduced an Appendix2 for the users ready reference, which provides a listing of CLASSIFICATION SYMBOLSAND NOTATIONS available to the Owners of vessels, offshore drilling and production unitsand other marine structures and systems.
