Our hometown of Urayasu was named 130 years ago in 1889 when Japan’s municipal system was instituted, with the villages of Todaijima, Nekozane and Horie merging to create Urayasu Village. Jinzaemon Arai, the village’s first head, reportedly named it with the wish for “Ura yasukare (peaceful seas),” and because an old nickname for Japan was Urayasu no Kuni (Land Where the Mind Feels at Ease).

There are a few other areas in Japan that are or have been called Urayasu. In the Tohaku district of Tottori Prefecture, for example, there was an Urayasu Village (which merged to Kotouracho) from 1940 to 1954. There is still an Urayasu Station on the Sanin Main Line.

For fourteen years, there was also a municipality called Urayasu Village in both the Tohaku and Higashi-Katsushika districts, as well as areas called Urayasu in the cities of Okayama and Kuwana. Kuwana City even has an Urayasu Shrine.

The name Urayasu is known nationally now, but it was not really recognized when I was a child. When asked where I was from during my travels and I would answer “Urayasu,” people would inquire whether I meant Urawa.

After the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line was completed in 1969 and landfill projects spurred development, Urayasu’s population grew rapidly, and the town was elevated to city status in 1981.

One event that definitely helped Urayasu gain recognition was the opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983. In addition to being a residential city by Tokyo Bay, Urayasu became known as an urban resort city.

I believe it is our responsibility to pass down the name of Urayasu—which was thoughtfully named and which our predecessors preserved—to future generations.
