TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Follow in the Footsteps of Christ

The great fifty-day celebration of Easter has concluded, as have the feasts honoring the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ. Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized "have clothed yourselves with Christ" (Galatians 3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church's baptism ritual when we sing, "You have put on Christ, in him you have been baptized."

This message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today's Gospel, we get to the heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, follow in the footsteps of Christ.

SENIOR LUNCHEON REMINDER! Tomorrow, Monday, June 20, 2016

following our 12:10pm Mass. We look forward to seeing you!

A COUPLE OF CHANGES!

You may have noticed that Deacon Henry deMena’s name no longer appears on the front cover masthead of our bulletin. That is because Henry and his family have permanently relocated to Naples, Florida, where he is serving as a deacon at his new parish of St. Agnes. How blessed they are to have his considerable gifts! For the foreseeable future, Deacon Henry has graciously

offered to continue holding his two bereavement seminars here at Notre Dame – one in the spring and one in the fall. We are so grateful we can continue to provide this valuable resource to those mourning a loss.

You might also have noticed a name change on the bottom half of our bulletin cover: what was formerly the “Quilting Ministry” is now called the “Pat Gawdun Quilting Ministry” Not only did Pat found the ministry and ensure that it thrived for more than a decade, she was the ultimate example of a true disciple of Jesus: rooted deeply in faith; engaged fully in the life of the parish; never seeking the spotlight; always concerned about others instead of herself; generous in all ways. Today, Pat continues to love our faith community from her heavenly home.

DO YOU ATTEND SUNDAY’S 7:30AM MASS REGULARLY?

We are in need of Hospitality Ministers for the 7:30am Mass on Sundays. If you can make coffee and plug in a coffee machine, this job is for you! Many hands make light work, so we are hoping to hear from a few willing souls! Contact the Parish Office at 973-538-1358, extension 100 for more details or to sign up.

GIFT SHOP ANNOUNCEMENT

With the dedication and creativity of a new leadership team, a decision has been made to temporarily close our Christ Corner Gift Shop from July 1 until just after Labor Day. There were many items in the current shop that were not selling, so no new merchandise was ordered in an effort to clear out that existing inventory.

When the “new and improved” Gift Shop reopens in September, we are confident the parish family will find much to be excited about! Our leadership team will be working hard to determine what types of merchandise best meet our ministries’ needs and also reflect the overall mission of our evangelizing parish community.

If you have questions or would like to serve as a Gift Shop minister when the shop reopens, please contact Jean in the parish office: 973-538-1358, ext. 122, or [email protected].

OUR MASS BOOK

There are currently many dates available in the 2016 Mass Book for the daily 12:10pm and 5pm masses from October through December. Until those Mass times have been filled, the 2017 Mass Book will remain unavailable.

If you would like to request a special Mass intention in 2016 for someone living or deceased, please call the Parish Office at 973-538-1358, extension 100, or stop by the Hospitality Desk before or after any of our weekend Masses.

Continued from last week… 4 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PRAYER

#4. P B R

Because you are in a genuine friendship with God, he answers your prayers. At the most basic but astounding level, prayer works. It works! God is not obligated to anyone and does whatever he wishes, but he

chooses to act through prayer and because of prayer, not apart from prayer. This means that prayer brings results. Prayer makes a difference to the world. Matthew 7:7 reads, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” It goes on: “For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (verses 8-11.) James 4:2 makes it perfectly clear: “You do not have, because you do not ask.” It’s that simple. You do not have the things you want because you do not ask for them. God has blessings stored up for those who will ask. Though God can act in any way he pleases, he chooses to work through prayer.

Prayer builds a relationship between you and your God; it changes and prepares you; and it just plain works. God uses this unique form of relationship to bring you countless blessings.

FATHER’S DAY PRAYERS

In gratitude for my Father…

Dear God, the Father of us all, I thank you for my father. Along with my mother, through the marvel of your creation, my father gave me the gift of life itself. He was such a good teacher and mentor, such a wonderful example of how to live a life of faith. Please take care of him now and be generous with him as you prepare him for the rewards of eternal life you have prepared for him.

For a father who was difficult…

God of Love, I come before you to pray for my father. You know how much he suffered and you alone fully know how much was wounded and broken in him. I feel so sad, and at times I feel so angry, so cheated, because I couldn't have a good relationship with him. I don't want to spend the rest of my life resenting my father, so I turn to you to hold him up to you. I know you are a God of mercy. Forgive him and heal him. Please let that forgiveness touch my heart as well. I want to forgive him and know the peace of letting go of those hurts - or at least the peace of not letting them continue to hurt me. I pray for him because I want what is best for him. I want him to know you and to know your love for him. One day, in your loving embrace, may all the wounds in his heart be healed.

For a father who has died…

Father of Life, I thank you for my father. He was such a blessing to me while he was still with us. I still miss him so much. I thank you for what he left me as gifts of love and faith. I pray that he has enjoyed your embrace and that the relationship he and I have now might someday be renewed with you in heaven. Until then, I entrust him to your love and ask you to let him look out for me and to assist me to stay on the path to you.
