    Chapter 1: Introduction

    Notre Fleur Company

1.1 Background and Significance of the project

Thailand located in the tropical zone which has various geography, climate and

also landscape those affect to cultivate and grow of plant which relate with Thai people

living. This is the reason why Thailand has several of plant such the rice is the main of

Thailands plant, fruit, and the rubber tree, vegetable and also flower which concern about

culture, traditional and religious of Thai. Be in the public eye, Thailand is one nation of South

East Asia had been plenty plant and to trade them to other nations because Thai people has

been mutuality with the cultivation so long time.

As above-mentioned that plant had been related with Thais life, besides the rice,

Thailand has various flower plants which affect to live of Thai people. A long time ago Thai

used flowers to worship Buddha, many ceremonies, decoration house, sometime they made it

to be garland and other sacrifice. For instance, Wai Kru ceremony is the ceremony to respect

the teacher or professor which uses the flower to be representative for a recall kindness of

professor. In Thai literature has related about flower such name of actor, insinuation and

description them. Also in the present, Thai brings the flower using in multidivisional; for

example, the decoration house or place, twine, using in ceremony or worships and also to

make the incense, perfume and other aroma. Therefore, the plantation flower business is the

one interest business in Thailand; however, Thai has several religious ceremony, party,

    funerals, festival, wedding and others.

    (SIRI,2007)()(LOVERLAND)

From few years ago, flowers are more desired in the market for responding

customer all organizers and other customer that need the flower to retail. In urban area or

community have the flower shops to provide various flower but it has to buy from middleman

so pricing is high than buy them from the manufacturer. Notre Fleur Company is the

manufacturer which locates in Chiang Rai province that is the company provide fresh flower

to the customer such as flower shops, hotels, the organizers and etc. The reason why our

company locates in Chiang Rai because of geography, climate and also landscape are suitable

for planting flowers such rose and chrysanthemums. Those flowers are high price because it

is difficult to look after by the expert. The most of who acknowledge to plant flowers in the

north are the hill tribe which we get quality product to sale quality product for building and

    expanding wide business.

    (THAIPORTALCO.,LTD.)

Many flower companies in several part of Thailand maybe face various problems

such as product decline, cheap price, natural disaster, economic or not able to operate

company. Those problems are the base problem on every business when we make this project

to solve the problems and study together. The main of doing this project have marketing

analysis, technical analysis, financial analysis, risk analysis and project evaluation which

benefit to who want to study this business and the way that they need to apply in their

    business.

    (!,2010)

Thus the flowers are the product that sale all year in Thailand because they have

used all time in small to large ceremony or event and today occur various kind of flowers that

must to study about them to develop this business in the future. Moreover, doing this project

helps who interest and want to study this case have a guideline to instruct the right to do the

    flowers business.

    Chapter 2: Industry Profile

    2.1 Nature of Industry

The world cut flower industry is a highly dynamic industry. Product varieties, the

origin of production, production techniques, markets and retailing arrangements are all

undergoing continuous change, challenging the adaptive capacity of the actors involved.

Specialty cut flower production has the potential to increase income for both small and large

farms. Notre Fleur Company is one of flower farms where located at Mae Sai District,

Chiang Rai Province, which is proper landscape and cold weather so its suitable to plant the

flowers on 22,400 square meters. The wholesale florists' market is the most demanding as far

as grading, uniformity, consistency, and packaging. Wholesale florists assemble and make

available high-quality flowers for retail florists. They offer retailers a timely and dependable

supply, one stop shopping, large or small quantities, product guarantee, and credit. We run

business to cover in the first north area of Thailand that we are the manufacturer both to

    wholesale and retail.

Notre Fleur Company is flower manufacturers to produce products are rose and

chrysanthemums, Notre Fleur are not including export abroad. However, our product are

    required of Thai because Thailand has several culture, traditional and different religious;

therefore, Thai need to use the flower many times or every day. The becoming of flower

manufacturer has many problems to run this business; for instance, the budget to invest at the

first time, needs more employees, need professor, pest and whatever concern about current

situation. So the manufacturer is the primary to operate the product to release product for

    customers.

Most of all, we are not only manufacturer but we are also the wholesaler as the

sale of goods or merchandise to retailers, to industrial, commercial, institutional, or other

professional business users, or to other wholesalers and related subordinated services. In

general, it is the sale of goods to anyone other than a standard consumer. The wholesale are

in business to provide products and services to buyers (e.g., retailers) who either cannot

purchase directly from suppliers because their purchase quantities are too low to meet the

suppliers minimum order requirements or, if they purchase directly from suppliers, will pay

higher prices compared to bigger retailers who obtain better pricing by purchasing in greater

    10Chapter2:IndustryProfile

quantities. Since wholesalers sell to a large number of buyers their order quantities may

match those of large retailers thus allowing them to obtain lower prices from suppliers. So the

customer must buy them in the high price but we are the wholesaler which is the wholesaler

not pass the middleman, we can sell directly our product to the retailer in cheaper price. It is

one alternative for the customers. Other alternative, we give the customer who is the retail

which we have our office and shop in the same area of the company. However, for the retail

sell just only in Chiang Rai and some province near there in the north, we have sell the retail

for a few group of customer and to keep all kind customers; moreover, its easy for people in

    the near place.

    (BENEFITS OFWHOLESALERS)

Holiday and festivals purchases traditionally drive the flower industry. The flower is

required on all the important day or festivals in Thailand that is happening such as Asarnha

Bucha, Makha Bucha, Loy Krathong and so on.

They have to use flowers in part of make a merit in religious activity to worship the

Buddha or use flower to make the festival look more gorgeous. Beside, the holidays, along

with birthdays and anniversaries, are ideal dates for men to select as part of a Frequent

Flower Gift Program. And again flowers have been used as a part of social ceremony for

example, wedding ceremony, funeral ceremony and so on.

    ()(,2008)

()(weddinginlove)( )Marketing efforts were directed to local retail florists and the farmers' market. The

farmers' market showed more potential as there were few vendors with flowers, and

consumers making unplanned purchases were less critical than retail florists. Other possible

venues that can be considered are wholesale florists, supermarkets, and direct selling to

    restaurants, hotels, or other businesses.

    (SMITH,2000)

In short, we are manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer to access market and to operate

follow market strategies, and other strategies that concern our company.

    2.2 Situation of Industry

    Temperate flower

There are several of temperate flower which can produce throughout the year in

Thailand, such as roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, Gerbera, Gladiolas etc. However, if we want

productivity with good quality, we have to grow in areas that has suitable climate. Especially,

the high area where the weather is cold as in cool highlands of northern Thailand such as

Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Tak ,Northeast as Loei andNakhon Ratchasima, Southern Yala

province. It can be planted temperate flowers too such as chrysanthemum but temperate

flower will give high yield and good quality in winter mostly. For the production of off-

season can do only some areas only and give low yield also lower quality than its season.

Although Thailand can grow flowers in a variety area however, the areas for planting

temperate flower tend to decrease. From Information on year 2006 from Department of

Agriculture found that the total area for planting temperate flowers approximately 9520 acres

and in 2007 the planted area are around 7,017 acres which lower from the original, although

not much, but may continuing decrease in 2008 that some part of problem as a result of

natural disaster. Hence, a cost of production is higher. Moreover, the imported from abroad

country has increased, so it affects to Thai agriculturist cannot compete with the flower of

China and Malaysia that has volume and the quality is closer with Thailand but cheaper.

Especially roses and chrysanthemums therefore, Thai agriculturists turn to grow other flower.

For the market situation of temperate flower on year 2008, Thailand imported fresh

cut flowers around 3314 tons worth 65.75 million. Then have been exported fresh cut flowers

in 1250 tons worth 70.49 million baht, the mostly temperate flowers that has been exported

are rose, carnation and chrysanthemum with amount of 525 tons, representing approximately

46.12 million in Major imports include Japan, USA, Italy, Singapore, Taiwan and Myanmar,

also Thai imported temperate flower, including roses, carnation and chrysanthemum amount

of 468 tons, representing approximately 14.99 million. Most imports from China and

Malaysia, and imported Thai temperate flowers are still increasing continuously. At present,

the temperate flower plants that available in stores and flower shops are more than 80% of

    flowers that imported from China.

    12Chapter2:IndustryProfile

    Rose is important to economic

As roses is a cut flower that planted widely throughout the global business

extensively in long time. Rose is a cut Flower that trade as the one in the auction market Al

smear in Netherlands which is the world's largest traded a flower market auction. At year

2001 have been trading up to 1672 million of flowers, and often have the highest sales in

various countries in comparison with other types of flowers that produced by the countries of

the world's largest rose production including Italy, Netherlands, S pain United States,

Germany, Israel, Colombia, Ecuador, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Belgium, France, Mexico

    and Malawi etc.

Currently Thailand has grown roses of cut flower garden about 5500 scattered across

the country. An important plant sources such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, TakNakhon

Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Ratchaburi, and Kanchanaburi. The most expansion area is Tak

province. The currently estimated the production areas is 3,000 rai because Aumper Poppra

has a suitable climate as an area is not steep, and low wages (Foreign workers). The rose

production in Thailand may be divided into two types in terms of quality technique and

quantitative technique. Quantitative technique of rose production, it means to grow roses on

a large area or grown on flat land. It will give a high yield of large quantity, but low quality.

That is why it has low of price. Therefore, this production must be produced in large

quantities for farmers to be surviving. The production of roses in terms of quality, it will

grow well in the north and higher ground by planting under the plastic housing in restricted

area, including production management and good postharvest practices. Also Use

professional qualified workers that makes a good quality of rose which give a long life. The

market of medium and small quality roses now is saturated. The farmer can sell only on low

price. Moreover, a production in the market of high quality roses in country is not enough

and lack of continuity. Therefore it makes demand of import rose is increasing which from

theNetherlands and abroad such as Malaysia, etc.

Thailand has the potential to produce a high quality of roses, but it must be producedin the appropriate area which is an area greater than 800 meters above sea level. If grown in

the plains area the production will has a good quality only in winter. So, high area will be the

    trends of produce rose.

cases run as small as 3 1/2 in (8.9cm) or as large as 5 1/2 in (14cm). They are the classic

florist roses, and with good reason. As shrubs, the hybrid teas tend to be twiggy and

somewhat ungainly, so ingenuity is required to work them into the garden.

    (HYBRID TEA ROSES)

What Makes Hybrid Tea Roses Different from Other Roses?

Hybrid teas generally produce only one blossom at the end of the stem, rather than

clusters of flowers. They have an open rather than bushy habit. Virtually all are repeat

bloomers throughout the growing season and offer some degree of fragrance.

The flowers on hybrid tea roses may have over 60 petals and be as large as 5 inches across. A

signature of hybrid teas is the long, pointed buds that open by slowly unfurling. Plants will

grow anywhere from 3-6 feet tall, depending on the variety and the growing conditions. The

long, strong stems make them great cut flowers. Hybrid teas have been cultivated in almost

every color except blue, with many extraordinary bi-colors to choose from.

    (HYBRIDTEA ROSES-SELECTING,GROWING ANDCARINGFORHYBRIDTEA ROSES)

    Pests and diseases of roses

Roses are susceptible to a number of pests, diseases and disorders. A large number of

the problems affecting roses are seasonal and climatic. Certain varieties of roses are naturally

more resistant or immune than others to certain pests and diseases. Cultivation requirements

of individual rose species and cultivars, when observed, often assist in the prevention of

    certain pests, diseases and disorders.

    Fungal diseases

Powdery mildew caused by the fungus S phaerotheca pannosa: The disease is

characterized by white powdery fungal growth over the upper surfaces of the leaves.

Some distortion of leaves can often be observed. This disease is particularly

exacerbated by warmer, humid weather (but not necessarily wet weather). The fungus

rapidly spreads as it produces masses of conidia that are wind and water (splash)

    borne.

  • 8/7/2019 Notre Fleur Company

    20/111

    19Chapter2:IndustryProfile

Blackspot caused by the fungusDiplocarpon rosae: Disease symptoms are black

blotches on the leaf surface. In some cultivars the spots may be very small but in the

majority they rapidly expand and can be surrounded by yellowing. In these cases the

extent of defoliation may be severe. This disease is favoured by wet weather and is

best controlled by the use of resistant varieties such as Iceberg. Leaves must be wet at

least 7 hours for infection to occur and so the timing of irrigation is important to

minimize the activity of the fungus. It is better to irrigate in the morning so that there

is a reasonable chance that the leaves dry out during the day. Again the use of sodium

    bicarbonate is recommended for trialing.

Stem canker: caused by a variety of fungi. The main symptom of the disease is a

dieback from cut stems and occasionally from dead flowers. If the disease gets into

the crown of the rose it can kill the whole plant. This disease (along with viraldiseases) can be most effectively controlled by hygiene techniques where secateurs

etc are sterilised between each plant. The fungus enters via cut surfaces and so it is

essential that the cutting implements are free of fungi.

Greymouldor Botrytis blightcaused bythefungusBotrytis cinerea: This fungus

most commonly causes a rot and premature senescence of flowers. Grey brown fungal

growth may be evident on affected flowers. The fungus is favoured by still moist

conditions. Prompt attention to dead heading can help to limit the spread of the

    disease.

    (PESTS ANDDISEASES OF ROSES-FACTSHEET)

Anthracnose: This disease is somewhat similar to blackspot in appearance but

appears in cool early spring weather, where blackspot needs warmer, late spring

    weather.

DownyMildew: This disease that is not real common in hot, dry area, but it is worth

mentioning. It is a major problem in the cooler, coastal areas. Downy mildew is

indicated with purple splotchy markings on the rose stem and foliage. The plants can

become completely defoliated, and spreads like wildfire throughout the garden. It is

more common in the spring than in the fall, and usually disappears in the warmer,

drier weather. The disease is spread by wind.

  • 8/7/2019 Notre Fleur Company

    21/111

    20Chapter2:IndustryProfile

Rust: Rust is usually not a major problem in dry area, but it has been known to appear

sporadically in pocket microclimates. Rose rust appears as yellow patches on the

surface of leaves, with orange pustules of spores underneath the leaf. The fungus is

spread by wind. Affected leaves fall prior to healthy ones and plants may be

    defoliated in serious infections.

    (BELENDEZ)VIRALDISEASES

Rose mosaic virus: Symptoms include yellowing of leaves, blotching etc. but are

most often observed as a mosaic pattern of yellowing that looks like an oak leaf

pattern. Infected plants may have some mottling and distortion of flowers, although

there is a viral disease, rose flower break, reported to be different to rose mosaic virus

which causes these symptoms. In most cases the initial effects of the virus are not

significant but build up over a period of time to produce effects that can become quite

considerable. There are only two effective strategies to control these diseases. The

first is to ensure that the roses that are purchased come from a reputable producer who

can guarantee that the roses are free of virus (ie. certified). The second and most

important is to ensure that there are very stringent hygiene procedures in place to

minimize the spread of the virus from plant to plant. Sterilisation of cutting

implements between plants is essential. These viruses do not spread by insects or any

    other vector.

Rose wilt: this is thought to be caused by a virus but this is not fully understood.

Symptoms are a downward curling of leaves, epinasty and premature leaf drop. The

colour of the leaves is often very weak and the whole growth of the plant is very poor.

Plants with these symptoms should be removed and disposed off in the rubbish.

Purchase plants only from certified growers.

    (PESTS ANDDISEASES OF ROSES-FACTSHEET)PEST

SpiderMites: Evidence of their presence is silvering of leaves where the mites have

destroyed individual leaf cells. Fine webbing and eggs on the undersides of leaves is

further evidence of the presence ofTetranychusurticae. This is one tiny little critter

that can be a major problem in hot area, as they love it when it is hot. Fortunately,

spider mites are less of a problem as the weather begins to cool down. The spider mite

is actually a relative of the spider family. Spider mites look like tiny flecks of salt and

  • 8/7/2019 Notre Fleur Company

    22/111

    21Chapter2:IndustryProfile

pepper on the backsides of foliage. Watch out for roses that are growing against the

house or block wall where they get afternoon sun, as this is a prime condition for the

spider mite. The plant can defoliate quickly when spider mites are out of control. I

have very good success with keeping spider mites minimized by using the water wand

on a daily basis during very hot weather. Avid is a great product for controlling spider

    mites.

    (BELENDEZ)VIRALDISEASES

Aphids: Aphids are the most common insect pest on roses. The actual aphid species

vary depending on where in the state the roses are grown. These may include the rose

aphid, Macrosiphum rosae, the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, and the

cotton aphid,Aphisgossypii, among others. Aphids favor rapidly growing tissue such

as buds and shoots. Low to moderate levels of aphids do little damage to plants,

although many gardeners are concerned with their very presence. Moderate to high

populations can secrete copious amounts of honeydew, resulting in the growth of

sooty mold, which blackens leaves. Very high numbers may distort or kill buds or

reduce flower size. In most areas of California aphids are normally a problem for only

about 4 to 6 weeks in spring and early summer before high summer temperatures

    reduce their numbers.

    (CARIFORNIA)

ThripsThrips imaginis: This insect will be seasonal causing more problems in mid

to late summer. Damage is seen as silvering of the foliage and distortion of growing

points and flower buds. The underside of leaves may be covered with the excreta of

the insect which is like brown tar droplets. There are no effective specific biological

    Ray Blight

This disease is caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella ligulicola. The ray flowers

(marginal flowers of an inflorescence) are attacked, so that the blooms are deformed and one-

sided. Early infection may cause blasting of the buds.

    RayS

    peck

This disease is caused by the fungi Stemphylium and Alternaria. These fungi cause

brown or white necrotic specks surrounded by colored halos on the fully expanded ray florets

when humidity and temperatures are high.

    Gray MolT

This disease is caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea. Leaves show brown water-

soaked spots. Infected parts become covered with a grayish-brown, powdery mass of spores.

This disease may be confused with Ray Blight disease.

    Bacterial Blight

This disease is caused by Erwinia chrysanthemi. The most pronounced symptom is a

rot of the upper part of the stem, resulting in wilt and collapse of the distal portion. Infected

cuttings may show a brown to black decay at their bases. Occasionally, the only symptom is a

    marginal leaf scorch.

    CrownGall

This disease is caused by the bacteriumAgrobacterium tumefaciens. Infection with

these bacteria causes large swellings on the crown and nearby roots.

    Virus Diseases

Chrysanthemums are subject to a large number of virus diseases, including mosaic,

chrysanthemum smut virus, tomato spotted wilt virus, and aster yellows. Virus-infected

plants generally have spindly, stunted shoots and yellowed foliage. Leaves may be marked

with ring spots, lines, pale areas, or mottling. Infected plants are stunted, form dense

"rosettes", and have small flowers. Virus diseases are spread by sucking insects such as

    aphids and leafhoppers.

    Insects & RelateU

    Pests

    Chrysanthemum aphiV

    s

Chrysanthemum aphids (Macrosiphoniella sanborni) and other aphid species are

pests on chrysanthemums. The chrysanthemum aphids are brown to black, which other

species range in color from green to pink. Aphids feed by piercing plant tissue and sucking

plant sap. They prefer feeding on new growth in such areas as shoots, the undersides of

leaves, buds and flowers. Their feeding can result in distorted growth, stunting and

sometimes death of the entire plant. As they feed on plant sap, they excrete honeydew (a

sugary material). The sooty mold fungus feeds on the honeydew, resulting in unsightly, dark

fungal growth. In addition to damage caused by their feeding, chrysanthemum aphids can

    transmit various plant viruses.

    Two-spotteW

    spiW

    er mites

Two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urtica) and other mite species are pests of

chrysanthemums. Mites are not insects, but are more closely related to spiders. They tend to

be more of a problem during hot, dry periods. Mites are extremely small and can barely be

seen without a magnifying lens. They have piercing mouthparts with which they puncture

plant tissue and suck plant sap. With a light infestation, leaves develop stipples (tiny yellow

spots) and appear dusty. Early damage is often overlooked until damage is more severe.

With heavier infestations, symptoms include distorted leaves, and withered and discolored

blooms. In addition, fine webbing can be seen on flower buds, between stems and on the

    undersides of leaves.

    Chrysanthemum leafminer

Chrysanthemum leafminer (PhytomyX a syngenesiae) is the larva (immature form) of

small (about 1/8-inch) dark-colored flies. The adult female lays eggs on the undersurfaces of

leaves. The larvae hatch and penetrate the surface to enter the leaf and live between the upper

and lower surfaces of the leaves. As they move through the leaf feeding, they create winding

trails that are pale green to brown in color. Dots of black waste products are visible in some

of the trails. Severely infested leaves may dry up and droop downward along the stems.

Our Company sets the price by Competitive Price. From our product, we have high quality of

product and good service but low price for comparison with competitor.

For above, our price is low price which is not enough for demand of customers. Rose growers

in Probpra, Tak are facing more than 3,000 rai. They are less bloom because that year's cold weather

long time. This is a condition that does not like them. The little flower is not enough to balance

reserve, jump to prices higher than year 2008 and selling flowers from grade A 10 Baht per piece but

year 2009 are15-20 Baht. Due to the fact that compare with our price, we are the lower price which

also risk for not enough demand (INN). Especially, Valentines day which the market need more

flower, so the flowers are in short supply and increasing to import the flower from other countries such

Japan, China andNetherlands but most of them are very high price than us.

    Technical

Plant tissue culture is as a means of propagation one but the practice under the control of asepticcleanliness, temperature and light by bringing parts of the plant. It is still alive, such as total stem,

inflorescence, stalk eye, leaf, and petiole since anther culture on synthetic food. And such parts

can growth and developments of complete plants, etc are all the leaves, stems and roots that can be

grown in the natural environment. For example, cane, Chrysanthemums, strawberry, and asparagus.

However, it has to expense more costs to building them (Somsakksn, 2010). We entrance just new

one market, its hard to do plant tissue culture, therefore; we still use normal method or base on

knowledge and technique not advance cause of cost or budget.

    External Factors

    Politic and Economic

Perceive clearly about Red-Shirt in Thailand very effects the economic and politic, they are

anti-government demonstration that damages Bangkok is the trade center of Thailand. On last April,

they convened at center and burnt the building, tires, and making fences. It was conflagrant all around

and damages the economic loss 70 thousands million baht. Previously expected to travel this

year will grow by 80-10%, but the incident could cause the whole year did

not grow or grow in low around 2-3% of the direct impact just only 8% of GDP (Prime Minister's

Office, 2010). The Red Poll shows that the average age of Red-shirt is 40-60 years around 56.48% and

23-40 years around 25.76% abandon their jobs for collection that economic not growth and its a

problem concern with politic (Sigree, 2009)

Even though, its not more effect for us because most our employees are the tribes, they dont

want to joy with political issue, they prefer peace and easy life style on hill. Moreover, they have the

knowledge about how to plant the flowers and attend the flowers to growth well.

    Competitors

In the last year, the price of roses is the most popular in Valentines Day and increasing price is

threefold. Although they are increase the price but the seller want to buy or more import the roses from

Kunming and theyre also expensive. The roses of Chiang Mai are lower than Kunming but the

products are less and increase the price to be twofold. Moreover, the rose of Pobpra, Tak is the one

competitor that is the big roses seller and more products.

The most of competitor very effect us is Kunming which export the roses 1 in 3 of the world.

Current cut flowers of Kun Ming send it to the world's major flower market auction inNetherlands. On

behalf of the flowers of Yunnan which is also the European market and exports of cut flowers to

Yunnan, Japan, Thailand, Singapore and South Korea. Of course, the deluge rose flows into northern

of Thailand. China will produce enormous if this great cut flowers, the cold logistics or the air to grow

subsequent to enter into business dcor, ornamental flower of Thailandwhich is very large because of

all year's ceremony. We have a high frequency, ordination, wedding, seminars, etc. whole required for

    flowers to decorate (Akom, 2009).
