Rev Bruce Kenrick (18 January 1920 – 15 January
2007) was an English social activist and Minister in
the United Reformed Church and the Church of
Scotland. He is best known for writing "Come out the
Wilderness"[1] and as the founder of British housing
organisation Shelter.[2]

Activism
In response to the poor housing conditions, Kenrick set up the Notting Hill Housing
Trust, which maintained the fabric of the area, and ironically, laid the foundations for its
later gentrification. It was out of the desire to put national pressure on local
government to improve housing that Shelter was born at St Martin in the Fields in
1966.
After a dispute over the leadership of the organisation with Des Wilson, Kenrick left
Shelter. He remained a significant figure on the broad left in the church, and his
membership of the Iona Community and work on the example set by the revolution in
Cuba helped set the direction of radical Christianity in the UK.

Tandis que le nombre de précaires, de mal-logés, de « homeless »
s’aggrave….
Mais conservent un discours originel sur « faire le bien des pauvres »..

Rough sleepers in London
What does this graph show?
The figures in the graph show the
number of people each year in London
that were in contact with services for
rough sleepers. In 2012/13, around
6,400 people were seen sleeping rough
at least once over the course of the year
by street outreach teams. This is a rise
of 750 people compared to the year
before and almost double the level of
four years earlier.
The statistics also show that almost 90%
of those sleeping rough are men. The
spread of ages of those sleeping rough is
quite wide. Around one in eight are aged
under 25, with around one quarter aged
26-35. Half of all rough sleepers are
aged 36-55.
What does this graph show?
After years of substantial falls,
the number of households
accepted as homeless in
London has been increasing
since 2010. In 2012/13 4.7
households per 1,000 were
accepted as homeless, well
below the peak of 10.1 per
1,000 in 2003/04, but around
50% higher than 2010/11. In
terms of numbers, this
translates to 15,500 people in
2012/13 compared to 9,500 in
2009/10.
What does this graph show?
This graph measures the duration
of stay in temporary
accommodation (upon leaving) in
London and compares it to rest of
the country.
39% of households leaving
temporary accommodation in
London had spent more than two
years in such accommodation,
compared with 2% elsewhere in
England. Similarly, 50% of
households leaving temporary
accommodation in London have
spent at least one year there
whereas in the rest of England, the
figure was closer to 20%.
Londons’ poverty profile
Key facts
•27% of Londoners live in poverty after housing costs are taken into account, compared with 20% in
the rest of England. The cost of housing is an important factor in London's higher poverty rate.
•The majority of people living in poverty are in a working family. As employment has increased so has
the number of people in a working family in poverty - from 700,000 to 1.2 million in the last decade,
an increase of 70%.
The number of unemployed adults is at its lowest level since 2008, at just over 300,000. The
unemployment ratio in Inner London has halved over the past 20 years reaching 5.6%, slightly
higher than Outer London (5.2%) and the rest of England (4.8%).
•Almost 700,000 jobs in London (18%) pay below the London Living Wage. This number has
increased for five consecutive years, particularly among men working full-time.
•At 860,000 there are more people in poverty in private rented housing than there are in social rented
or owner-occupied homes. A decade ago it was the least common tenure among those in poverty.
Londons’ poverty profile
•The vast majority of children in poverty are in rented housing (more
than 530,000), half with a registered social landlord and half with a
private landlord. The number of children in poverty in private rented
housing has more than doubled in ten years.
•In the three years to 2013/14 there was a net increase of 7,700
affordable homes a year compared with a target of 13,200, meaning the
target was missed by 40%. 60% of these new homes were available for
social rent.
