Texas School Thrives Despite a

Constantly

Changing Environment

One of the strengths of the Success for All model is that it

builds continuity into the academic program. If students start

using SFA programs in kindergarten, it is far more likely that

they will become successful readers as they progress through

elementary school and beyond.

Lackland Elementary, a SFA school located within the U.S. Air

Force Base in Lackland, Texas, does not have the luxury of

continuity: most of their students stay for only two years before

their parents‘ next transfer. It‘s one of the unique challenges of

running a school on a military base, where change is always

looming on the horizon. For parents and students who have left

the confines of Lackland AFB for a new school in another city,

however, there is soon a common realization—nothing

compares to SFA.

―We get tons of e-mail from former parents saying, ‗We miss

Success for All,‘‖ says Principal Terry Leija.

There‘s good reason to miss Lackland AFB and Success for All

programs: The percentage of students reading at or above

grade level at Lackland has hovered in the upper 90s during the

past decade. Ask the officials at Lackland AFB the secret of

their success, and they have a simple answer: constant review

of students‘ progress. Students from all over the world shuffle

in and out of enrollment, and the school is lucky to have a small

group of students make it from kindergarten to third grade.

Given this small window, Lackland teachers and administrators

have to continually monitor the effectiveness of their approach.

―The data piece of SFA is huge,‖ said Miles Payne, Lackland‘s facilitator. ―You use it to try and get the most out of your

students that you can.‖

College Week at Stacey

College Week at Stacey Junior Senior High.

Students participated in many activities during College Week at Stacey. Students created college pennants to hang on their locker, answered trivia questions to win shirts, and listened to their teachers‘ college journey. Each morning students learned facts about why it is important to further their education and how to make that possible. Teachers

decorated their doors to educate students about their favorite university. On Wednesday, Generation Texas visited students during lunch and seniors went to Café College to gain

more knowledge about post-secondary studies.

Today was Spirit day in which students wear their favorite college shirts. More pictures to

come in next weeks e-newsletter.

Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I

married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten

years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary

school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early

Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr

old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I

look forward to an exciting school year.

Stacey Profile: Johnathan Silvas By: Elleanna Eckman-Kantz, Stacey senior

A lot of kids have seen you around campus, but because you are new, some may be uncertain about your job, can you

explain what you do?

My current position with Stacey is a Para Professional. The role I serve in the classroom is to be the teacher’s

support. This role is fulfilled by me assisting students with disabilities in the classroom; students who need

modified instruction or assistance as well as keeping up with their Individualized Education Program (IEP).

How long have you worked in your current profession?

This is my first year as a Para Professional. However, I’m currently working on my certification for Special Education

through Texas Teachers Alternative Certification Program.

Where did you work before coming to Stacey?

Before coming to Stacey Junior Senior High School, I held a position as a Store Manager for H-E-B Grocery Retail in

San Antonio and in the Central Texas Region. At H-E-B, I had the privilege to help lead a successful operation retail

unit with great people. I had the honor to be a part of achieving maximum return on investments, as well as creating

a team environment to ensure customers were provided quality products.

What is the most interesting place you have ever visited or lived?

The most interesting place I have visited was Bangkok, Thailand and the border of Burma. Thailand has a unique

cultural mix of people, amazing shopping malls, historical sight-seeing places, as well as savory cuisine.

What is your favorite book?

Crazy Love by Francis Chan and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey's.

How about your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is Courageous. It’s a movie about four men and one calling: to serve and protect.

Do you have any pets or a favorite animal?

I currently do not have any pets, but my favorite animals are Labrador Retrievers, preferably chocolate labs. These

animals are full of life, outgoing, and devoted companions.

I'm sure you have hobbies or activities you enjoy outside of work; can you tell us a little bit about them?

I enjoy playing golf, training for marathons, trekking, kayaking, and being introduced to different cultures from

around world.

If you could acquire any super power, what would it be and what would you do with it?

I would like to acquire the super power of teleportation; the ability to transport your whole body from a room to

different destination. The possibilities are really endless with this super power, and I think best part is that traveling

no longer has to be a long endeavor.

Do you consider yourself to be a rule follower, or more laid back?

I would consider myself to be a rule-follower because I understand the benefits of these principles and their

importance to maintain a balanced lifestyle and relationship with others.

Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself?

My wife and I work closely with a non-profit organization in Thailand that rescues children from sex-trafficking,

abuse, and slavery. We spent six weeks working with this organization this past summer. We had the opportunity to

teach English as a second language, build a safe-home, install a water purification system, and work in the slums.

Elementary Students Participating in Statewide Reading Program

Lackland Elementary students in grades 3 - 6 are again participating in the Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) reading incentive program. This reading for pleasure program began in 1979 to promote reading in grades 3 - 6 and to introduce children to a variety of quality books, to develop critical reading, and to honor imaginative authors. In November each year, a committee of librarians from the Texas Library Association (TLA)

announces a Master List of 20 titles from among hundreds of books recently published and written by living U.S. authors. At the Lackland ISD Media Center, we make sure to have three copies of each of the nominated titles, and we introduce them to students with multimedia book talks and trailers. Along the way, students also learn about using the online catalog, deciding between genres, fiction, and non-fiction, placing holds in the library system, and just generally having a good time reading. Winning the top award from these 20 titles is a nationally recognized honor, and best of all, it is the STUDENTS who decide on the winner. To participate, students read or hear read aloud at least five of the books. At the end of January 2012, our participating students vote to decide their favorite title, using an “official” TBA ballot. The winning author of the book receiving the most student votes statewide is recognized at

a large and extravagant ceremony in April, during the TLA Annual Conference. Our Lackland students are currently eagerly reading these titles, taking notes, and looking forward to casting their ballot for the 2012 winner in this “Children’s Choice Award” program. It will be exciting to find out the favorite!
