    November 2010 news and events in East Aurora Schools:

    November 5-6

    Junior High Area All State musical performances at Frontier High School

    November 11

    No school, Veterans Day

    November 18

    Parkdales SMILE group will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner to benefit UNICEF Haiti from 5-7 PM at the school. Dinnersare $5 and will include pasta, meatballs, salad and a roll.

    November 19-20

    Senior High Area All-State musical performances at SUNY Fredonia

    November 19

    Ms. Austins kindergarten will have special Thanksgiving activities at 1:45 PM; also November 22 at 9:45 AM.

    November 25-26

    No school, Thanksgiving recess

    District news:

    Two members of the Class of 2011, Amelia Leggett and Hannah Schuetz, have been named Commended Students in the2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 of over 1.5 millionstudents who took the PSAT in 2009.

    Congratulations to the new members of the Roycroft Chapter of the National Honor Society, inducted on October 27:Brendan Caputi, Michael DeSantis, Kathryn Ebersole, Mia Ferraina, Rachel Hallnan, Daniel Hayes, Emma Holbrook, MollyJones, Nicole Mason, Margaret Naughton, Heather Scheer, Wesley Stubenbord, Brianne Szopinski, John Werbitsky,Amanda Westfall and Luke Wolfling.

    From Mary Robinson-At the October 20 meeting of the East Aurora Educational Foundation, board members voted to approve two grant

    proposals, each supporting New York State standards and reflect the Foundations mission: To enhance studentseducational experiences by funding grants for programs within the East Aurora School District.Using E-Books to Support and Encourage Third Grade Readers was submitted by Parkdale School reading specialist,Christie Edholm in the amount of $1,087.16. Funding will be used to purchase 6 Kindle ereaders and e-books tosupport and encourage student reading. Third grade students will benefit by using this technology by using theinteractive features, such as the built-in dictionary and text-to-speech features to deepen their understanding ofwhat they are reading. By using the e-readers with her students, Mrs. Edholm hopes to bring real world reading,through electronic text in addition to printed words, into the classroom.The second proposal, Flip Video Cameras, was submitted by East Aurora High School art teacher, Thomas Kegler.Funding in the amount of $750.00 will provide 10 flip video cameras to complement art courses. The use of thisnew type of camera will streamline the efficiency of both shooting and uploading footage into computers, andexpose students to the use of current video technologies. Students will learn to use new tape free digital videocamera through visual projects in Video Study and Editing, Yearbook classes, and Film Club. Students who arerequired to do film projects for other courses, outside the art program, will be able to sign out the cameras, as well.
