MARKS MUSINGSA few Sundays ago I preached a sermon on the TenCommandments. Typically the Commandments draw up all sortsof negative feelings for many different reasons. In The Ten

Commandments from the The Back Side, author J. Ellsworth Kalas, shows how a simple change in the lens through which we look canhave a dramatic effect. I think Jesus very much did this in histelling of the parables, taking what seemed to tell us one thing andhe gave us a different lens to look through. As we go through life, may we have the wisdom, strength, and resolve to follow Christ'slead and be willing to look at our world through a different lens.

The Ten Commandments From The Back Sideby J. Ellsworth Kalas1. God shall have all of you.2. You shall adore the mystery that is beyond comprehension.3. You shall enter into God's name.4. The Sabbath will keep you.5. You shall accept the blessing of the past so that you can have

    a future.

    6. You shall embrace life.7. You shall cherish the sacredness in yourself and your mate.8. You shall bless and be blessed by the truth.9. You shall become a larger person.10. You shall rejoice in your neighbor's having.

    Blessings,Mark+

    EPISCOPAL YOUTH COMMUNITY

St. Andrews EYC energy is in full swing. Our kick-off

event was September 11, we attended our first conferencein Washington, NC, at the end of September; and in earlyOctober we had a beach sweep and cookout at theSpruills house; discussed a few of Rob Bells NOOMASeries.

Not only has our youths energy been impressive, but theirability to work as a team is too. This was evident at the

UNCW Ropes Course on October 17.We had a group of 15 youth and four adults step up andfinish the UNCW Challenge Course. It tested our teambuilding ability through a series of exercises and a ropescourse.

Our journey at UNCW started with a short hike in the woods to the Challenge Course, and then we spent the

morning participating in a few games and challenges, where we had to display initiative and problem solve aswell as communicate and work together as a group.

Following the morning activities and a picnic lunch, wemoved on to the event we had all been waiting for theropes course.

We had the opportunity to do the low and high ropescourses, both were part of a 35-foot-plus structure thatcontained more than 10 challenging elements and a zipline. Many of us stepped out of comfort zones and facedsome as we tackled the courses. This could not have beendone without the help and encouragement of ourteammates.

It was a beautiful fall day at the UNCW Ropes Course, where we had a blast and the opportunity to growpersonally and as a group a must do for next year!

We had a full schedule in October, and November looks

to be another exciting month. Thank you to those who

participated in Trunk-or-Treat. We also appreciate

everyone who purchases a wreath in support of our

    Nashville mission work

    in July.

    CITY

    MINISTRIES

Mel and Linda Smith began Inner City Ministries eleven years ago

with the hope of bringing a hot meal and Holy Scripture at noon onSundays to all in need. In their present location, they use two cov-ered outdoor facilities belonging to Hope Baptist Church at the cor-ner of Martin and 14th for their ministry. One shelter is used forserving food while the other is used beforehand to offer a place to sitand listen to words of Scripture and songs. Between 50 and 100 per-sons attend each Sunday.

St. Andrew's became active in the food service under theleadership of Virginia Colantuono who later brought CarolynFarley and her mother, Nan, on board.

Frances Goodman and Virginia are shown above serving the meal

along with other volunteers on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Otherparishioners who volunteer on the rotating schedule are: Becky and

Jim Fawks, Judy and Mort Neblett, Tina Poisson, and Laura Wells.

Another avenue for participation in this ministry is donating neededitems listed each month in the Soundings. This month they are call-ing for practical items such as soap, clean shirts, gloves, and whiteathletic socks to fill the Christmas gift bags. With

Thanksgiving just around the corner, you may want to seize this op-

The giftbags contain practical items such as soap, clean shirts, gloves, and hats for the colder weather. This year wehave been asked to contribute men's white athleticsocks to this effort.
