San Antonio Tricentennial

300 Years In The Making

In 2018, San Antonio will be celebrating its 300th anniversary in a big way. Our chapter will do its part in helping with the celebrations. We have submitted our application in October to become an official partner of the Tricentennial Celebration. We will be notified after November 1 if our application has been accepted. We will be using our sponsorship of the 4th of July Patriotic Ceremony as our main event to highlight a part of San Antonio’s rich history and in 2018, our ceremony will have a theme representing the 300th anniversary of the founding of our city.

However, we are not limited to just one event for the celebratory year. At our November meeting, we will discuss ideas on various ways our chapter can celebrate our tricentennial. For those who can not make the meetings, please feel free to submit your ideas to Governor Joe Perez via email at [email protected].

Our group has been a part of San Antonio for the past 40 years, surely we can come up with ideas to celebrate the past 300.

An article by Shannon Collins with DoD News, Defense Media Activity appeared on the U.S. Department of Defense website. Her article states that while under Spanish rule, Puerto Rico fought alongside the American colonists in the Revolutionary War. Bernardo de Galvez, the governor of Louisiana in 1779, was named general of the Spanish colonial army and led his troops – consisting primarily of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics – to capture the cities of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; Pensacola, Florida; and St. Louis, Missouri, from the British. Recent Articles on the Internet About Gálvez

The National Archives blog is a website where National Archives staff, volunteers and researchers from across the country go through boxes and write about what they find. Jackie Kilby, Archives Technician at the National

Archives at College Park, Maryland wrote an article about how Oliver Pollock helped finance the Colonist’s efforts during our War of Independence. The article is titled Oliver Pollock – Supporter of the Revolution, Creator of ‘$’ and can be found at the link below. https://text-message.blogs.archives.gov/2016/10/11/oliver-pollock-supporter-of-the-revolution-creator-of/

Bernardo de Gálvez, Pensacola 1781 is a comic book by graphic artist Daniel Torrado Medina, who resides in Spain. It illustrates the heroic victory of Gálvez over the British at the Siege of Pensacola which removed the British from the entire Gulf Coast. Honorary Granadero de Gálvez of the San Antonio Chapter, Judge Edward F. Butler, Sr., has a new booklet out titled, George Washington’s Secret Ally. From his Editor’s Note, we read, “The facts and storyline presented herein are based on the author’s book “Gálvez/Spain, Our Forgotten Ally in the American Revolutionary War: A Concise Summary of Spain’s Assistance”. Thank you, Judge Butler, for illuminating this part of our American history.

Submitted by Briana Perez Attendance:

Eileen Barrientos, Judge Edward Butler, Henry DeLeon, Pauline Faz, Joaquin Faz, Lucila Flores, Roberto Flores, Vivian Garza, Carlos Garza, Olga Lizcano, Manuel Lizcano, Briana Perez, Elizabeth Perez, Joe Perez, Miaoyin Rojas, Michael Rojas, Tim Thatcher, Susan Thonhoff Rodriguez, Judge Robert Thonhoff, Richard Whynot, Melissa Zamora, Alex Zamora The meeting commenced at 7:25 p.m. Judge Edward Butler provided the Invocation. Alex Zamora led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Governor Joe Perez welcomed guests Vivian Garza, Carlos Garza and Melissa Zamora. Treasurer Elizabeth Perez presented the Treasurer’s Report for September.

She reported a Beginning Balance of $1,646.87, Expenses of $16.10, Income of $325.15, and an Ending Balance of $1,955.92. A motion to accept the report was made by Olga Lizcano and seconded by Henry DeLeon. After a vote, the motion carried.

Governor Joe Perez ceded the floor to Judge Edward Butler who provided us with information about his new book “George Washington’s Secret Ally”. He announced that he will have the book available for purchase after the meeting.

Joe Perez announced the birthdays for this month. He spoke about our participation recently in the Diez y Seis Parade. He said that because the parade is held in a hot month at a hot time of day, it is too much for us to march in our wool uniforms, so we will probably not march in that parade in the future. Joe announced upcoming events with the Military Veterans Parade on Saturday, November 12th, our National Meeting on November 11 through 13 in Galveston and our Christmas Party on Saturday, December 3rd at La Fonda Restaurant. He also announced that he submitted the application for our group to be an official partner with the San Antonio Tricentennial Commission with our 2018 Fourth of July Patriotic Ceremony as an official event. He hopes to have a response from the commission soon. Joe also reminded everyone that our membership dues are currently due and delinquent at the end of November.

There was discussion and agreement that we will pray for Rueben Perez and his wife Carrie. There was also discussion on the Burgundian Cross flag and what it represents.

Richard Whynot reminded everyone about the Gálvez medal made by the Louisiana Society Sons of the American Revolution. We agreed to revisit making a Gálvez medal of our own.

Joe introduced Judge Robert Thonhoff as our Guest Speaker. Judge Thonhoff took us back in time to 1991 when the organization went to Spain and had a royal audience. He walked us through the events on each day of the journey which was packed with interesting activities. His presentation, with several photos from the trip, was very well received by those present.

The meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
