PrOGram nOtesABOUT MARGARET LANCASTER

Hailed as the “leading exponent of the avant-garde flute” (Kyle Gann, Village Voice), Margaret Lancaster has built a large repertoire of new works written specifically for her that employ extended techniques, dance, drama, multi-media, and electronics. Recognized for her fearlessness and versatility, Lancaster is widely in demand by composers of different styles and genres. Composers and directors she has worked with include Chen Shi Zheng, Milton Babbitt, Lee Breuer, Larry Polansky, Eve Beglarian, Jon Appleton, Phil Kline, Gerhard Stabler, Christian Wolff, Jo Kondo, Guillaume Bernardi, Jacob Ter Veldhuis and the Common Sense Composers Collective. Upon the premiere of Robert Cantrick’s music theater piece Three Mimes, Bernard Holland (The New York Times) remarked, “Ms. Lancaster’s flute spit and barked beyond its usual repertory…a virtuoso versatility was both demanded and achieved.”

Lancaster is a member of Essential Music and the Downtown and Glass Farm Ensembles, a guest of Ne(x)tworks, Counter)induction, and Talujon, and a recurring performer at Spoleto Festival USA and Santa Fe New Music. She was recently selected to participate in Meet the Composer’s New Works for Soloist Champions project. Performance highlights include Lincoln Center Festival, Ibsen Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Whitney Museum, Festival de Otono, Festival D’Automne, and Bremen Musikfest with Absolute Ensemble. She has appeared as a lecturer/soloist at many sites including Stanford, Dartmouth, Columbia, Princeton, Bennington, and the National Flute Association, and has recorded on OO Discs, New World Records, Naxos, Innova and Tzadik. Noted for her inter-disciplinary performances, Lancaster, who also works as a choreographer, dancer, and actor, is currently developing several new multi-disciplinary works and has played lead roles in the independent features Rockabilly Vampire and Combustible Edison’s Opening Act. An amateur furniture designer and avid tap dancer, Lancaster performs solo and chamber music concerts and can be seen on stage touring worldwide in Lee Breuer’s Obie-winning Mabou Mines’ production DOLLHOUSE…www.margaretlancaster.com

ABOUT THE FIU NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE

Founded in Fall 1987 by Orlando Jacinto García, the FIU New Music Ensemble specializes in the performance of contemporary chamber, experimental and electronic music with an emphasis on the music of the last 50 years. Comprised of some of the best student performers from the FIU School of Music, the ensemble’s instrumentation changes from semester to semester allowing for the presentation of a variety of repertoire. Performances include those on campus as well as those in the community at galleries, libraries and other universities/colleges. The ensemble has been featured at the New Music Miami Festival, Subtropics Music Festival, Society of Composers National and Regional Conferences, National Conference of the College Music Society, Norton Museum in West Palm Beach, Miami Dade College, University of Miami, the Adrienne Arsht Center, and Stetson University, among others. To date, the ensemble has presented music by numerous composers representing a wide range of 20th- and 21st-century aesthetics.
