EDITOR’S NOTE

90TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BERLIN MOSQUETWO-DAY CELEBRATIONS HELD ON 24 & 25 OCTOBER, 2014

Construction of the Berlin Mosque and the adjacent Imam’s House started in 1924 and was com-pleted in 1927. This beautiful oriental monument of devotion and sacrifice was built by members of a small organization called “Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement”. To celebrate its 90th anniversary a joint venture was organized by the Central Anjuman in Lahore and the Rotterdam Jamaat of Holland. Head of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Community, Hazrat Ameer Dr. Abdul Kareem Saeed and the General Secretary Mr. Amir Aziz al-Azhari and other members of the community specially came from Pakistan to attend this important event. Members from Jamaats in Hague, Amsterdam, Almere and Rotterdam (Holland), Milton Keynes, Woking and London (UK), Paramaribo (Suriname), Portugal and Austria, Mian Khurram Aftab, Mr. Noor-ur-Rahmaan and Mr. Yakoob Ahmad from Pakistan came all the way to take part in this special celebration. The Anniversary was inaugurated with the Friday congregational prayers and continued till late in the evening. Hazrat Ameer delivered a passionate khutbah thanking Allah for accepting humble efforts made by the small community in Lahore and for making sustained and concerted efforts by persons who served this Centre in spite of financial constraints and ravages of the World War II.

Dr. Jawad Ahmad in his over-view briefly talked about the role of the Berlin Mosque in presenting true picture of Islam and in promoting understanding and harmony among the followers of the three great religions of the world in Germany. Till the Second World War II the Berlin Mosque was pivot of German Muslims and leading Muslim scholars and leaders in various fields of the Muslim World. The talk is being published in this issue.

Mr. Amir Aziz, General Secretary of the Central Anjuman in Lahore and Mr. A. S. Hoeseni, member of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman, Hague, both spoke in German. Mr. Hoeseni gave brief history of contribution made by the members from Hague specially in the repair work of the Mosque. Mr. Aziz gave brief resume of the history of the founding and construction of the Berlin in German for the benefit of German speaking audience. Our learned Brother from Hague Mr. Haroun Badloe gave a very impressive speech about the devotion and sacrifices of those who served the Mosque. He sang melodiously a moving poem of the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement in Urdu which emphasised that humility is the key to attain nearness to Allah and this is the only way to eradicate arrogance and unnecessary pride. We are reproducing elsewhere in this issue transliteration of the Urdu poem and its English translation for the benefit of our readers: Jo khaak may miley usey miltaa hai aashnaa. We also had the pleasure of listening to a brief talk by our brother Mr. Rafiek Moennoe Singh from Paramaribo (Suriname) conveying message of well wishes and support of the Suriname Jama’at for the Berlin Mosque.

We are thankful to our respected elder Mr. A. Santoe and Sister Nasima Nasrullah and her group of workers from Rotterdam (Holland) who not only made hotel arrangements for the guests but also

looked after catering and tour of the city of Berlin during the 90th Anniversary celebrations. All the guests enjoyed delicious food for two days.

This issue of the Hope should have come out as Nov-Dec. 2014 issue, but unfortunately due to some technical and personal reasons, relevant material and photographs could not be compiled in time. We have tried to compile whatever material and photographs we could lay hand on. Our apologies to our readers for this delayed publication.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE HISTORY OF THE BERLIN MOSQUE

DR JAWAD AHMAD

(Text of talk delivered at the Berlin Mosque on the eve of its 90th Anniversary held on 25 October, 2014)

“And when Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House (they prayed), Our Lord! Accept this from us; surely You are the Hearing, the Knowing.) – (Holy Qur’an, 2:127).

History tells us that when Prophet Abraham (as) and Hazrat Ishmael (as) rebuilt the Ka‘bah, it was an arid land without any vegetation or inhabitants. Prophet Abraham (as), under the command of Allah, left Lady Hagar and the infant child Ishmael all alone in a deserted place. But the unique submission of the father and the son, their fervent supplications and supreme sacrifice worked a miracle, and Allah not only fulfilled His promises but bestowed honour and veneration on this blessed family of father, son and mother. Each ritual of Hajj is not only a continuous source of spiritual inspiration but also earns perpetual blessings for these blessed members of this noble family.

This house of Allah in which we are all in today displays the Divine blessings on a very small scale, but its construction and survival is not less miraculous in any way. We have produced a small booklet containing a very brief history of the Mosque and the Mission House which will give you some

idea of the “mini miracle” of which this Mosque has stood witness to for the last ninety years of its existence in this beautiful area of the historic city of Berlin.

The Mosque was built in an area in which no Muslims resided nearby. It was planned by a member of a small community in Lahore, which had no big endowments to provide funds. Muslims generally considered dissemination or any work of propagation in the West to remove misconceptions about Islam and its Holy Founder as a wishful idea or frenzy thought.

Today, after ninety years, just imagine: a lonely Indian of short stature, a teacher by profession, dressed in Western attire and a strange turban wrapped around his head going about in Berlin and making relentless efforts to design and build a Mosque composite of Mughal architecture and Moorish design; unfamiliar with the language, having no experience of construction and no substan-tial financial support to feed this huge project. Maulana Sadr-ud-Din, with a firm belief, conviction and passion, raised the foundation of a “mini Taj Mahal” so that believers can prostrate and exalt the Glory and Majesty of Allah. Within the short span of only four years – and with the fervent prayers and generous contributions of a band of just a few hundred men, women and children who had pledged to “uphold religion above worldly interests at the hands of the Great Reformer of the Present Times, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad – he worked a miracle: Die Moschee. It was not been named after any person or community.

Let me quote here the inspiring words of Maulana Sadr-ud-Din’s telegraphic message to Lahore:

“Our community should be proud of this remarkable achievement. I congratulate all you – the old and young, the rich and the poor – for it is due to your concerted ef-forts, sacrifices and fervent prayers that such a milestone has been accomplished about which some had doubts, and at times insurmountable difficulties created dismay and hopelessness. But, by the grace of Almighty Allah, the major task of the plan has been accomplished today. All of us should be grateful to Allah for blessing our humble efforts in His cause…The purpose of this Mosque is not only to serve Muslims as a house of worship but also to invite non-Muslims of Berlin to attend its lectures and sermons. Thus, it was essential to plan a spacious mosque. All praise be to Allah that the plan has been accomplished and a very suitable and beautiful mosque has been built in Berlin. It is ideal as far as its size, structural beauty and location are concerned.”

... God has indeed shown a great sign. Today we are not happy just because of this, though it is very good news that we will not have to spend large sums of money on its reconstruction; we are happy because Allah has shown a tremendous sign in saving His House and has given remarkable evidence of His Power and His Existence as He showed the world in the past the sight of Divine protection for Prophet Abraham. The Holy Qur’an says: ‘O fire, be coolness and peace for Abraham’ (21:69). He has once again displayed to the world that whom He wants to save is safeguarded even in a raging fire.

The history of the Mosque is as amazing as is its structure, inner architecture and colour combina-tion are fascinating. In recent years, so much more has come to our knowledge about the history of the Mosque that needs revision and expansion. With the help and guidance of our learned ‘Friend of the Mosque’, Dr Gerdien Jonker, we will be able to unfold information and additional facts and photographs about the significant role this Mosque played in the pre-War and the inter-War periods.

Before presenting a PowerPoint slideshow about the history of the Mosque and the Mission House and how the Mosque was inflicted with damages during World War II, I would like you to listen to an extract of the penetrating words of the late Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ali when the Reuters news agency broke the news about the survival of the Mosque, and his passionate appeal for funds for the immediate repairs to the damages done to the Mosque.

“Berlin has been destroyed; so utterly destroyed that the destruction of London and Warsaw and Stalingrad seem insignificant in comparison. Fire raged from its skies day and night. Hundreds of thousands of tons of bombs were dropped on it in succession for two or three years. At the end of this period, a vengeful nation, who had suffered countless losses at the hands of Germany, whose towns and industries and agriculture had been turned into a barren waste by the German forces, assailed Berlin and razed its buildings to the ground so that the onlookers said that London was not ruined; it was Berlin that was destroyed. But today, Reuters’ correspondent reports that in this ravaged city the Berlin Mosque stands alive. An impoverished Jama‘at erected a House of God in the city of Berlin. This Jama‘at de-sired no publicity because nobody bothered to see what it had constructed. It kept on contributing its wealth for the construction of the House of God and kept praying with humility: ‘O our Lord, accept this humble effort on our behalf.’ I still remember the spec-tacle. A handful of women was present at the Annual Conference. An appeal came from our missionary in Berlin that there were no funds left for the minarets. When I appealed to that handful of women, Allah opened their hearts and several thousand rupees was collected from the few women of a small Jama‘at. So I congratulate my Jama‘at today that Allah, the Most High, has shown a clear sign that their sacrifice has been accepted and today Reuters’ correspondent has announced to the whole world, something which was beyond our power, that in this devastated city, Allah has saved His House.... He has once again displayed to the world that whom He wants to save is safeguarded even in a raging fire.… All praise be to Allah. Where are those Muslims, or those who had instigated the Muslims to destroy the Berlin Mosque because it was built by the members of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement? O Muslims! Look at your intentions and look at the will of God. You wanted to destroy it because it was constructed by a Jama‘at which was imbued with the spirit of serving Islam; God showed, by protecting it in the midst of blazing fire, that His Hand is with this Jama‘at, and with the person who entrusted the Jama‘at with this holy mission.

Come, my friends, and prostrate yourselves before God with humility, for having made manifest such a great sign of His Power and His Omnipotence for such sinful and useless people as us. It is His mercy; we did nothing to deserve it, but there are no bounds to His appreciation. He has awarded so much recognition to such a trifling endeavour. Come, let us, too, thank Him for His mercy in displaying a miraculous sign, by taking a practical step forward. O those who doubt! Cast out doubts from your hearts on observing this remarkable sign from God, and be assured now that it has become God’s Will that His Name should spread in the world….”

This Mosque is a symbolic representation of a high sense of sincerity, devotion and sacrifice of many men, women and children of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Community for the cause of Islam. It, in a broad sense, reflects that religion is a universal concept of multiple principles of faiths. At this point, you will certainly enjoy listening to the enlightening words of Mr Kurt Aberhart, the Secretary of the All Churches Religious Organisation, enticing us out of a limited viewpoint:

“I have been invited by the Imam of the Mosque to read a passage from the Bible on the occasion of the birth of Christ. I am thankful to him for this and see it as gesture of tol-erance towards Christianity. This attitude is made even more admirable by the fact that Islam has a different belief about Jesus Christ than that of Christianity. Muslims believe that Jesus was only a prophet, equal in status to the other prophets, such as Moses and Elias, mentioned in the Bible, and do not believe that he possessed any Divine attributes. In spite of this, the fact that Jesus and Mary have been mentioned in the Holy Quran more than once is noteworthy. But this still does not provide sufficient reason to cele-brate the birthday of Jesus in a mosque. In this context, some other things are also thought-provoking. For instance, Islam counts Christianity among the religions of the world. I think that the Imam of the Mosque has set for us a good example by organising this gathering and it is my wish that Christianity should reciprocate by showing a much greater degree of tolerance for Islam than has been displayed up to the present time.”

This birthday of the Prophet Jesus (as) was celebrated at this very Mosque way back on 26 December 1964, when (the late) Maulana Muhammad Yahya Butt was the Imam.

Germany is a country where research and intellectual pursuit made her survive the ravages of the two World Wars. Every time, she rose with greater vigour and progress. It has made remarkable discoveries in the fields of science, technology, literature and has even given progressive vision to Christianity.

In this connection, Martin Luther gave Christianity a new turn. He is one of the most influential and controversial figures in the Reformation Movement. His actions fractured the Roman Catholic Church into new sects of Christianity and set in motion reform within the Church. A prominent theologian, his desire for people to feel closer to God led him to translate the Bible into the language of the people, radically changing the relationship between Church leaders and their followers.

Let me quote here what the late Imam Fazlul Karim Durrani thought about the new trends taking shape in Christianity way back in June 1927:

Page 14: Nov-Dec 2014 Editor: Nasir Ahmad B.A. LL.B. Vol. …...Nov-Dec 2014 Editor: Nasir Ahmad B.A. LL.B. IN MEMORY OF JALAL-UD-DIN AKBAR IBN-I ABDULLAH, SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA Vol. No. 7,

“We must bear in mind that of all the nations of Europe, this nation has the firmest belief in Christianity. Although they believe that the Gospels are not authentic nor are they the Word of God and that the beliefs of the Church are irrational, yet in order to make others accept Christianity they have presented it in a completely different garb – a garb of fine example and high ideals. The German nation is the leader of these high ideals in this age. Their research work and advancement in knowledge in various fields soon become the property of the whole world. Thus, in order to meet this challenge it is necessary to be familiar with the new thoughts and outlook of the German nation.”

This Mosque has kept up the Islamic features of religious tolerance and interfaith harmony. Let me quote here what the late Imam Maulana Yahya Butt said in a religious conference convened by the Cardinal Secretary of Pope John Paul in Rome in September 1978. One of the objects of this conference was to propagate the Pope’s important announcement of 1965 in which he had directed the priests to modify their past attitude towards the Muslims, to cultivate closer relations with them and to exchange views with them on religious issues.

“We welcome this announcement of Pope John Paul about religious tolerance and would like to take this opportunity to state with great pleasure that Islam has been practising religious tolerance for the past fourteen hundred years. Islam does not restrict itself to preaching tolerance only in words; it presents a practical example of tolerance which no religion has taught to this day. Tolerance is not just a policy in Islam; it is declared to be a part of faith to believe that all religions and their founders are from God. It even goes a step further than this to state that not only is it essential to believe in all the messengers of God; if even a single messenger is denied, a Muslim becomes an infidel. This concept of Islamic tolerance not only links the followers of all religions in a spiritual relationship, it also provides a firm basis for bringing them closer and promoting better understanding among them. There is so much respect and veneration among the Muslims for Jesus Christ and Mary that even in a remote village of the Muslim world, whose people are not even educat-ed, when the names of these two personalities are mentioned, people bow down their heads in respect.”

Brothers and Sisters in all faiths, I have tried to present an overview of the ninety years’ service this Mosque has rendered to the cause of Islam and to generating bonds of friendship and tolerance among the followers of the three great religions of the world.

Islam stands for the pure universal message of God revealed to earlier prophets (Holy Quran 98: 2, 3). This Mosque has made concerted efforts for the last ninety years to carry forward and to remove misconceptions and misinterpretations about this message and the Holy Messenger (sas). The Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement was established in 1914 to reinterpret and uphold the true and progressive message of Islam against the orthodox and extremist view. The Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement, if not in content, but in spirit, is playing the role of Protestantism in Islam. It religiously upholds rational and progressive interpretation and application of Islamic teachings and strongly advocates freedom of speech and tolerance and respect for human dignity for all.We cannot deny that to uphold truth one has to experience the tyranny which Prophet Moses (as) had at the hands of Pharaoh, the torture and persecution which Prophet Jesus (as) had on the Cross,

Page 15: Nov-Dec 2014 Editor: Nasir Ahmad B.A. LL.B. Vol. …...Nov-Dec 2014 Editor: Nasir Ahmad B.A. LL.B. IN MEMORY OF JALAL-UD-DIN AKBAR IBN-I ABDULLAH, SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA Vol. No. 7,

and the persistent, gruesome trials and tribulations for twenty-three long years, before ultimate triumph, like that of the Prophet Muhammad (sas).

The history of this Mosque is a continuous struggle to uphold truth and fos-ter tolerance, mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence.

Our learned sister and great ‘Friend of the Mosque’, Dr Gerdien Jonker, could not be here today, due to another commitment, to present her in-depth re-search work. It is a highly intellectual and true assessment of the role and im-

pact of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement in the West, with special reference to the Berlin Mission.

With apologies to Dr Jonker, I am taking the liberty of quoting her assessment and observation as was published in the Journal of Muslims in Europe entitled “A Laboratory of Modernity – The Ahmadiyya Mission in Inter-war Europe” (a Brill publication, Leiden, 2014). It is a chapter of her forthcoming publication in English, The History of the Ahmadiyya Mission in Europe.

“In this paper, I retrace the history of the Ahmadiyya mission in inter-war Europe as part of the globalisation narrative. Once they gained a footing, missionaries responded and adapted to local experiments with modernity as a means to simultaneously win over Europeans and to modernise Islam. The article first considers the mental map with which Ahmadiyya and other Muslim intellectuals approached Europe… In the larger picture of globalisation, the Berlin mission offers a telling example of local religious adaptation, emphasising the important rapport between the newcomers and the local factor.”“In 1912, Kamala-ud-Din, a distinguished figure … decided to travel to England to ‘plead the cause of Islam’ and launch ‘Jihad by persuasion’.”

“… his paper (Moslemische Revue) began by recounting how, at the start of the twen-tieth century, the Ahmadiyya reform movement modernised the Islamic tradition and established Islamic centres in London and Berlin to promote its approach. … Like other Muslim reformers around them, it was their aim to ameliorate the image of Islam in Europe while simultaneously reforming this religion, a combined aim which they sought to conduct through discussion, conversion and intellectual exchange….”

These extracts will give you an idea about the significant role the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement can play for promoting the true image of Islam and to bring greater understanding and assimilation among the followers of the three great revealed religions and pace the way towards cultural and religious harmony.

As a youth I had read the amazing history of the Berlin Mosque, in what circumstances the idea was conceived and how, just because of amazing dedication and passion, it was accomplished. I spent my youth in Ahmadiyya Buildings and observed that man – Maulana Sadr-ud-Din, a man of God and a man of faith. But when I visited this Mosque, my eyes could not believe that a man living in a simple house, in a street of the Ahmadiyya Buildings compound, Lahore, dressed in trousers with tail-coat and an impressive turban, whose delivery was oration and inspiration – could single-handedly ac-complish this magnificent and amazingly scintillating Mosque – where the echo of the recitation of the Holy Qur’an – according to my father – is just spiritually elevating. What were the financial

resources? – Children’s pocket money, housewives’ daily saving on flour, ten percent of a grass cut-ter’s income, and, of course, the jewellery of women who preferred beautifying the Mosque with two minarets rather than wearing jewels to add to their own beauty.

Our elders have left this amazing monument of dedication and sacrifice for the dissemination of Divine guidance. Can we not just keep it in good condition and make it a dynamic centre by passing on the Message of God to those who need it and who may value it more than we do? At this point, I recall what Prophet Jesus (as) said when addressing his disciples on how to seek the blessings of God:

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and, you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened” (Matthew ch. 7, verses 7, 8).

Finally, listen to a Divine sentence which is mentioned in the Qur’an and carries tremendous hope and assurance:

“And when you have determined, put your trust in Allah.” – 3:159

Let us work for the Mosque and for the sake of Allah and not for earning any credit or fame. The Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement and the names of Maulana Sadr-ud-Din and all those others who worked and sacrificed for the Mosque are known today in this part of Europe by this monument of dedication and sacrifice.

Let us rededicate ourselves for the House of God and for the Cause of God and for the Message of God.

Amen.

blessings of Allah be on him). LOVE also generates peace and happiness in the society. Follow the commandments of ALLAH and His Messenger, the Holy Prophet MUHAMMAD and earn an ever-lasting life here in this world and in the Hereafter. May Allah bless you all.

Ahmad Nawaz, Hayward, California I have just finished reading the February 2013 issue of the HOPE Bulletin dedicated to the memory of the late Br. Akbar Abdullah. I must say that your team has worked very hard to collect facts about the life and contributions made by our late Br. Akbar. The formatting of the Bulletin and photographs have made it very impressive and visual. Br. Akbar deserved such a beautiful dedication. I wish to congratulate you for making the Bulletin more than just a news bulletin. The brief life history of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sas) by our new sister in the fold of Islam, Christiane Backer, is very impressive and shows how his Perfect Example has inspired her thoughts and behaviour. I am sure her book “From MTV to Mecca” must be worth reading. Thanks for introducing the autobiography of a highly popular figure in the Western media, who, by her own study, has adopted Islam, and is facing challenges with firm faith and conviction.
