V critics call Wednesday night on Vegas PBS “The Smartest Night on

Television.” Each week, shows like NOVA and Nature demystify science

and technology, reveal the natural and living wonders of our planet, pres-

ent the latest scientific discoveries, and provide the answers that curious

minds crave.

This month, NOVA presents Making North America, a series that explores the cre-

ative and destructive tectonic forces that shape landmarks like the Grand Canyon or

Yellowstone National Park, and ponders how the continent has shaped our culture and

values. Then, Inside Einstein’s Mind and Einstein’s Big Idea retrace Einstein’s thought

experiments and reveal his simple and powerful ideas that reframed our understand-

ing of physics and the universe.

Nature: Earth’s Natural Wonders will explore extreme locales across six continents

to uncover unique stories about the challenges faced by their inhabitants, and we’ll get

a glimpse of the flirty and romantic side of nature with Love in the Animal Kingdom.

Furthering your investment in educational programming, both Nature and NOVA

edit these programs to create short video clips linked to lesson plans for classroom use.

Vegas PBS distributes this repurposed content to local classrooms online. More than

18 million times last school year, children viewed Vegas PBS educational video clips as

part of their teacher’s lesson.

When not in school, kids can enjoy the series premiere of Nature Cat. Children will

follow Fred, a house cat who transforms into Nature Cat and embarks on action-

packed adventures designed to inspire kids to go outside and play.

This new series is part of the PBS KIDS “whole child” approach to education. PBS

children’s programs address foundational skills in literacy, music and language, social-

emotional development, nature, science, math and engineering. This effort also seeks to

“surround the child” with reinforcing educational content on TV, plus online videos and

games, books, mobile applications, and in-person activities.

This summer, we piloted a summer camp program featuring the popular math and

science show, Odd Squad. During the camp, students ages 5-8 become Odd Squad

agents and use math and science to solve mysteries from the broadcast. Participants

also receive reinforcing interactive activities to continue their education at home with

a parent, and to earn an achievement badge upon conclusion of the camp.

Our community’s curiosity about science and nature often makes Vegas PBS the

most watched PBS station in the nation on Wednesday nights, and members write to

tell us that science programs inspire them to renew their membership or make an addi-

tional gift. Planners seeking a more diversified economy stress the need for more chil-

dren interested in science, math and engineering. Whether it is prime time or daytime,

in school or after school, the Vegas PBS science programs your membership makes

possible inspire and excite both children and adults. We thank you for your support of

shows that feed your curiosity and inspire you to explore the world around us.

...an extraordinary taleof violent creation anddestruction unfolds in aforgotten world that existedlong before our own...”

Join Vegas PBS as we embark on an epic road trip to explore the mighty forcesin geology and biology that have shaped our continent over three billion years.

seas spanning the length of the continent.Beloved landmarks like the Grand Canyon,Yellowstone and the Rockies are explored fromthe inside out as viewers witness the clashof continents and nature’s forces colliding.Enhanced by hyper-realistic CGI anima-tions, immersive geological field missions andthe latest scientific research, the series revealsthe incredible story of a majestic continent.

Mighty, elemental forces molded NorthAmerica. Fiery eruptions, titanic floods, thegrinding of great ice sheets and massiveimpacts from space all shaped our land. Now, for the first time NOVA presents abold and sweeping biography of our conti-nent, three billion years in the making, andhow it came to be. Renowned paleontologistKirk Johnson hosts this epic new three-hourseries and takes us on a remarkable roadtrip through our nation’s tumultuous deeppast sets out to answer three fundamentalquestions: How was the continent built? How did life evolve here? And how has itsspectacular landscape shaped human livesand destinies?

North America is a vast and vibrant con-tinent full of towering summits, rugged coast-

lines, abundant wildlife and stunning natu-ral wonders; however, the land, its creaturesand its people have not always existed asthey are today. In this spectacular new series,an extraordinary tale of violent creation anddestruction unfolds in a forgotten worldthat existed long before our own – one thatwas crossed by long-lost mountain ranges, deserts the size of Africa, and vast inland

Origins November 4Host Kirk Johnson crisscrosses the conti-

nent searching for evidence of the powerfulforces that gave birth to North America.Join as he rappels down the steep cliffs ofthe Grand Canyon to examine rock layers upto 1.7 billion years old, flies over active vol-canoes in Hawaii to witness new land beingformed, heads to Alaska to uncover fossilevidence that palm trees once flourishedthere, and descends deep into the palladiummines of Canada, where geologists havedated some of the oldest ever found inNorth America.

Off the coast of Lake Superior inMinnesota, Johnson meets up with geo-physicist Emily Wolin, a member of theUSArray project team deploying portableseismic sensors across the country, to exam-ine an ancient geological wound: a riftcaused by titanic eruptions that once threat-ened to split the budding continent in half.Scientists believe a giant “group hug”caused by converging neighboring landmasses a billion years ago may have held ustogether. The film also looks at theAncestral Rockies, a mountain chain thatrose and fell before the modern-day majes-tic range and was just as mighty. The teamthen travels to New York City to see whatclues to the past the bedrock holds andreveals that ancient mountains, not sky-scrapers, once towered over Manhattan.

Life November 11Investigate the mystery of how life

emerged on our primeval continent. Whywas North America home to so many iconicdinosaurs like T-Rex? How did a huge inlandsea filled with giant marine creatures endup covering Kansas? NOVA tells the inter-twined story of life and the landscape inNorth America and shows just how muchthe geology has shaped and colonized thecontinent. Viewers will dive with Johnsonand marine scientist Pamela Reed in theBahamas to see firsthand rare living fossilsand some of the oldest organisms on theplanet, and will go fossil hunting in theMidwest to uncover new dinosaur speciesand search for clues to explain how thedinosaurs flourished, then perished.

In Western Kansas, the team unveils a14-foot fish skeleton, 80 million years old, presenting evidence of the massive inlandsea that once submerged the Great Plainsand accounts for much of the diversity ofdinosaurs in North America. NOVA alsoillustrates the changes in the geology of

North America that once altered the land-scape from wet swamplands into lush tropicalforests where early primates once flour-ished, and unravels the mystery of why theydisappeared, leaving North America a mostlyprimate-free place until the arrival ofhumans millions of years later.

Human November 18From the gold rush to the oil boom, the

hidden riches of our landscape have helpedAmericans prosper. In the final episode,NOVA reveals the surprising ways that thecontinent has shaped human life. How didwe humans manage to migrate to this conti-nent some 14,000 years ago, and what chal-lenges were we up against once we gothere? North America’s landscape has pro-foundly impacted civilization and the wayour continent has been settled.

Humans have exploited its enormousresources, created vast wealth and support-ed a bustling population with the riches ofthe land. As a result, we have altered thecontinent on a time scale tens of thousandsof times faster than the powerful geologicalforces that shaped the land over billions ofyears before. And as the cities and popula-tions grow, so, too, does the potential risk ofcatastrophe posed by natural disasters –

N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 5 9

including a “supervolcano” under Yellowstonethat could one day obliterate half the conti-nent. Later, scale Alaska’s MendenhallGlacier with Johnson to explore what theearliest Native Americans would have con-fronted as they first entered the continent atthe end of the Ice Age; tour a gold mine inthe Sierra Nevada Mountains; head downinto California’s tar pits to see how oil isformed; explore the coal and iron thatfueled the growing industrial cities on theEast Coast until the discovery of gold trig-gered a stampede westward; and learn howoverexploiting our natural resources couldhave serious consequences for NorthAmerica’s future.

Our continent has seen some amazingtransformations over millions of years, yetwe are far from reaching the end of thisrestless land’s unique story. As NOVA’s wildride back in time and across North Americareveals, nature’s forces are relentlessly atwork, and nothing is ever permanent. Theseries repeats on the following Sundays at10 a.m.

NOVA: Inside Einstein’s MindWednesday, November 25 at 9 p.m.

On November 15, 1915, Albert Einsteinpublished “The Theory of General Relativity,”his greatest work. The work was the firstmajor hypothesis of gravity since IsaacNewton’s theory that had been presentedmore than 250 years earlier. Einstein’s theo-ry explains gravitational phenomena such asfalling apples, orbiting planets and escap-ing galaxies. It has survived a century ofcontinual tests of its validity. The conceptof general relativity transformed ourunderstanding of nature’s laws and thehistory of the cosmos, reaching back fromthe present moment to the origin of time

NOVA: Einstein’s Big IdeaWednesday, November 25 at 10 p.m.

More than 100 years ago, Albert Einsteingrappled with the implications of his revolu-tionary special theory of relativity and cameto a startling conclusion – mass and energyare one, related by the formula E = mc2.This equation was one of several extraordi-nary breakthroughs that Einstein made in1905. In that same year, he completed hisspecial theory of relativity, identified proofthat atoms exist, and explained the nature oflight. The latter would result in a NobelPrize in Physics for the scientist. AmongEinstein’s ideas, E = mc2 is by far the mostfamous. Yet how many people know what itreally means? In a thought-provoking andengrossing docudrama, NOVA examines thissimple formula by unraveling the story ofhow it came to be.

Great Performances: Chita Rivera: A Lot of Livin’ To DoFriday, November 6 at 9 p.m.

Legendary Broadway performer Chita Rivera has been light-

ing up international stages for more than seventy years. With

starring roles in iconic Broadway shows such as West Side Story

and Chicago, Rivera returned to Broadway in 2015 to star in

The Visit, the final John Kander / Fred Ebb / Terrence McNally

musical. In addition to archival clips from Rivera’s many shows

and television appearances, this career retrospective also fea-

tures interviews with Dick Van Dyke, Ben Vereen and many more

filmed songs from Rivera’s concert repertoire include “A Boy

Like That,”“America” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.”

Live from Lincoln Center: Act OneFriday, November 13 at 9 p.m.

Few have captured the magic of the theater better than Moss

Hart, a poor kid from the Bronx who went on to become a lion

of Broadway and wrote a series of classic comedies with George

S. Kaufman. Now another lion of the theater, James Lapine,

has fittingly reimagined his memoir for the stage. Lincoln

Center Theater’s gorgeous pro-

duction pulls out all the stops,

creating a world as vivid and

transformative as the stage itself. But it’s the strong perform-

ances from its cast, led by Tony Shalhoub, Andrea Martin and

Santino Fontana, that anchor the play in real human emotion.

First You Dream: The Music of Kander & EbbFriday, November 20 at 9 p.m.

This landmark television event is a tribute to John Kander

and Fred Ebb – the legendary award-winning songwriting team

whose Broadway shows include Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the

Spider Woman, Curtains and The Scottsboro Boys and timeless

songs including “New York, New York,” and “All That Jazz.” The

special features sparkling new arrangements of some of the

greatest songs to ever grace a Broadway stage, performed by a

stellar cast that includes Kate Baldwin (Finian’s Rainbow),

Heidi Blickenstaff (The Addams Family), James Clow (Peter Pan),

Norm Lewis (Phantom of the Opera), Julia Murney (Crimes of

Thesettlers of the new colony – namedJamestown – were immediately besieged byattacks from Algonquian natives, rampantdisease and internal political strife. Debra SoltDirector WorkforceTraining & EconomicDevelopment

s a child, I remember anxiously awaiting the time to get in the car and go

down to the annual Veterans Day Parade. I couldn’t wait to see all the elab-

orate floats, was intrigued by the synchronized marching bands and horse

demonstrations, and hollered for the clowns to throw us candy. As kids, we

didn’t really know the true meaning behind the parade or what it represented on the calen-

dar, but we did know it was to celebrate our veterans and be with family.

Today I find myself reflecting on the past, the present and the future of this holiday and

fear it has merely become another day off for our

children with families making no plans of attend-

ing a parade or spending the day with other fam-

ily. Veterans Day should be a day of reverence,

remembrance and celebration.

While Vegas PBS has long aired exceptional

documentaries of our nation’s veterans and mili-

tary conflicts, we also have produced a number of local documentaries on war heroes and vet-

erans from our own community in Southern Nevada. Over the past year, Vegas PBS has been

working with our Gold Star Families to recount the stories of their fallen family members.

These videos are published as part of Vegas PBS’ Stories of Service initiative and can be

found on our website at VegasPBS.org and on VegasPBS.veteranscominghome.org.This web-

site is designed specifically to serve our veteran community by providing links to local stories

and our resource partners who provide services to veterans within our community.

As Veterans Day nears this year, I encourage everyone to plan your day with a new purpose

of thanks and remembrance; it is the least we can do for all who have served our country.

Make plans to attend a parade, pay your respects at one of our local cemeteries, buy a serv-

ice member a cup of coffee or a meal, hang a flag, or visit family.

“But this Veterans Day, I believe we should do more than sing the praises of the bravery

and patriotism that our veterans have embodied in the past. We should take this opportuni-

ty to re-evaluate how we are treating our veterans in the present.” —Nick Lampson

American Comandante: American ExperienceTuesday, November 17 at 9 p.m.

Meet William Morgan, the larger-than-life American who rose to power in

Cuba during the country’s revolution. The charismatic American guerril-

la fought with Cuban leader Fidel Castro during the struggle and was

known as the “Yankee Comandante.” Morgan later fell out of favor with

Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara as he witnessed Castro turning to

communism. He began stockpiling guns to launch a counterrevolution

but was betrayed by one of his men and executed by firing squad at the

notorious La Cabana prison in March 1961. His body and acknowledg-

ment of his former alliance with those who would come to control the

government were buried in an unmarked grave in Havana.

Arlo Guthrie: Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary ConcertThursday, November 26 at 8 p.m.

In 1965, Arlo Guthrie took out the trash following a “Thanksgiving din-

ner that couldn’t be beat” with friends Alice and Ray Brock. The dump

was closed so he threw the trash down a nearby hillside. Guthrie turned

the hilarious account of his subsequent arrest, court appearance and

rejection from military service into “Alice’s Restaurant,” a musical

monologue lasting more than 18 minutes. On the 50th anniversary of his

arrest for littering, folk icon Arlo Guthrie brings the song in its entirety

to the stage.

The Pilgrims: American ExperienceTuesday, November 24 at 8 p.m.

On September 6, 1620, the Mayflower set sail from England with 102 passen-

gers, arriving in New England on November 11 after a voyage of 66 days. As

winter set in, as many as two or three people

died each day during their first two months

on land. Only 52 people survived the first year

in Plymouth. As Thanksgiving nears, filmmak-

er Ric Burns explores the converging forces,

circumstances, personalities and events that

propelled a group of English men and women

to embark on this perilous journey across the

Atlantic to an unknown world.

The Fidel Castro TapesThursday, November 19 at 9 p.m.

Fidel Castro was one of the most provocative political figures of the 20th century.

To some, he was an icon of resistance; to others, the very face of dictatorial oppres-

sion. This special chronicles how his drive and charisma catapulted him to power in

Cuba and how he used these traits to capture attention and maintain control of his

country for nearly five decades. Instead of sharing his story through interviews, the

program relies solely on media reports, rare images, recordings and footage obtained

from Cuban archives to document Castro’s turbulent life. These images bring remark-

able insight into the most significant moments of Castro’s career and personality.

The film details how Castro gained control of his island nation and how he tried – and

failed – to win the friendship of the United States.
