d Novato’s HistoryNovato’s history dates to 1300 AD whenMiwok Native Americans lived in a village atthe base of Mount Burdell. Legend has it thatthe Spanish taught the Miwok how to buildwith adobe and to cultivate food crops fortrade with Spanish missions.

Mexican governors made land grants in theNovato area. In 1839, Fernando Feliz wasgranted Rancho de Novato. The followingyear Ignacio Pacheco received Rancho SanJose.

After being sold several times, RanchoNovato was purchased in 1856 by FrancisDeLong and Joseph Sweetser. Subdivision of6,000 acres by DeLong was the beginning ofpresent day Novato.

Historical Downtown NovatoThe beginnings of downtown date back to1888 when the Home and Land Co. (thencorporate owners of Rancho Novato)auctioned off more than 200 lots in the areaof East Grant Avenue and Olive Avenue. By1910, Main Street boasted four hostelries anda large number of bars. The town wasofficially incorporated in 1960.

Novato now has a growing number ofinnovative businesses. Its city government isdistinguished in Marin for its responsiveness tothe democratic process. On statewide tests, Novato students rankamong the highest in Marin County, whileMarin is the highest achieving county inCalifornia. Graduates of Novato’s publicschools go on to top universities andcolleges in the country. Novato publicschools and educational programs haveearned a multitude of honors, includingprestigious California Distinguished SchoolAwards and Golden Bell Awards. Our athleticteams and visual and performing artsprograms have won many championships atthe local, regional and state levels.

d COLLEGE OF MARININDIAN VALLEY CAMPUSCollege of Marin is accredited by theWestern Association of Schools and Colleges.There are two campuses to serve you inbeautiful Marin County. The KentfieldCampus is located approximately 11minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge at835 College Ave. in Kentfield. The IndianValley Campus is on a spectacular 333-acresite on Ignacio Blvd. in Novato, CA. The twocampuses serve a county population ofapproximately 250,000 residents.

IVC Continues to ExpandNew buildings, new programs, new studentsand a new farm are all part of the IVC story.Dramatic growth at IVC is the result of severalyears of hard work to reinvigorate curriculum,broaden offerings, and improve outreach toprospective students. There were only 750

credit students enrolled at IVC in 2005 whichmore than doubled to 1,700 credit studentsin 2010. That trend line continues as the IVCprograms and services grow.

Real Estated Housing in NovatoA desire among Bay Area residents to live inNorthern Marin County has created a steadydemand for Novato housing. The medianhome price of single family residences inNovato in 2013 was $743,000 and themedian price of a condo was $336,000.

With Novato’s award-winning schools, closeproximity to San Francisco and dedicatedopen space, Novato’s a haven for familiesand retirees alike. The average age ofNovato residents is 40.7 years.

The pioneering project was the first civilian re-use of a military base in the nation. TodayHamilton Field boasts a balance of 2,200homes and the creation of 2,200 jobs, amida growing climate of business development.

The workforce housing component wasmanaged by the nationally-awarded builderpartnership of Shea Homes and CentexHomes, which delivered 1,200 homes; ofthose 775 priced at workforce housing levels.Novato and its strong support from workforcehousing advocates work to ensure a supplyof homes affordable to the local workforce.

Suburban Alternatives Land Trust (SALT) is anonprofit community developmentorganization incorporated in 1998 byNorthbay Family Homes (NFH) as a supportorganization of NFH. SALT looks fordevelopment projects that provide homes,jobs, recreation, agriculture or open spaceto meet communities’ needs. Novato is alsothe pilot for the Employers EmpoweringHomeownership initiative, an education andleveraging model to increase theopportunity for ownership for the workforce ofthe North Bay.

The Festival is produced in collaboration withsponsors and volunteers, and stretches alongseven blocks of Grant Avenue in downtown

Leadership Novato, a proven,respected Chamber program, offersfast-track networking, political know-

how, as well as resources to influence, andcourage to change direction and makefriends in unexpected places. LeadershipNovato is the NCOC’s “Novato MastersProgram.”

Leadership Novato is a nine-montheducational program in which participantsgain greater knowledge and perspectiveof trends and issues shaping the Novatocommunity. Leadership Novato kicks offwith a retreat and first session on back-to-back days in September. Leadershipmeets one full day a month for the nexteight months, and the class graduates inMay.

The Leadership mission is to identify andnurture existing and potential communityleaders, to increase their knowledge ofthe community, and enhance individualleadership skills.

A key component to Leadership is teamprojects, in which students are divided intobreak-out teams to create and carry outNovato community projects. In that

process, Leadership candidates grapplewith the challenges of the team processand the finer points of leadership.

There’s no charge to apply andscholarships exist for independent business

owners. Our graduates have effectivelyinfluenced the future of Novato andgreater Marin County for more than 23years.

The city of Novato contracts with theChamber to operate the full-serviceVisitors Center that directs thousands

of walk-in visitors, tourists, and new residentsto Chamber Member businesses monthlyfrom its convenient downtown location. TheChamber staff provides visitors, residents andpotential residents with destination directions,maps, relocation packets and fields generalquestions about Novato and the region.

VisitNovato.com furthers that reach withinformation about stay, play, eat, meet andshop attractions in the city. Managed by theTourism Committee, a group of hospitalityprofessionals, the site is a valuable link fordrawing visitors, including many fromCanada and Europe, to Novato. A portion ofthe money generated by overnight visitors –Transient Occupancy Tax which makes up 10percent of the city’s budget – provides theoperating budget for the Visitors Center andpromotional outreach throughout the year.
