From Father Andrew Brinkman

Adoration is a necessity to man, his heart must adore or die; men fallen away from God adore—or idolize—power, State, machinery,

anything that seems bigger than themselves, to combine mystery with might. — Caryll Houselander, This War is the Passion.

During my senior year of high school, I began to attend daily mass at the Dominoes Farms headquarters in

Ann Arbor, Michigan. The mile-long, Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired, low rise building is the home of, not only, Dominoes Pizza, various U of M (the real U of M) health clinics, art galleries, Ave Maria radio and a small chapel where the Holy Mass is offered four times a day. Adorning the entry of the chapel is a sign reading, “Prayer takes time; saints pray and get more done in less time.” Frequenting the chapel meant seeing the sign and it has left its impact on me.

It’s true, it’s not magic—for those who pray, God accomplishes far more than could be done with one’s own effort. The example of John Paul the Great and Blessed Mother Theresa reveal two lives of action, real accomplishment, and yet it is no coincidence that they each spent hours of the day in prayer. Prayer is the place where a Christian responds to the loving initiative of God in his life. God is good and He wishes to share Himself with all mankind, the privileged place of receiving His love is in prayer, especially the Mass. Prayer is the time when one puts aside all the cares of the world to rest on the heart of Jesus. Jesus begins to take priority in the Christian’s life and since the Lord has greater freedom to enter the heart, He is therefore able to accomplish more than someone could do with his own effort. Truly the Lord answers the Psalmist’s prayer when He requests that the Lord bless the work of his hands. Prayer changes everything. As many of you know our three-parish cluster is privileged to have an adoration chapel where, for over 20 years, someone has been constantly watching with the Lord Jesus. Adoration is the place where we show our concrete commitment to Him and our parish by wasting an hour with Jesus. Prayer indeed takes time, but the Lord blesses 30, 60 and 100 fold whatever time one invests in the life of prayer. Imagine what the Holy Spirit would do if 12 people signed up for an hour of Eucharistic adoration. The Holy Spirit changed the course of history when 12 poor men, gathered in prayer with the Blessed Virgin, received the Holy Spirit and went to the four corners of the world proclaiming, “Jesus is Lord!”

On Sunday November 15 you will have a chance to sign up for an hour of adoration at the Saint Michael adoration chapel. All three parishes have the privilege of supporting this beautiful work. Shirley , who has generously served as coordinator of the adoration chapel since April 26,1992, has found volunteers to be present at all the masses of our parishes to give you the opportunity to sign up for an hour of Eucharistic adoration. If you are personally unable to sign up for an hour of adoration, endeavor to share an hour with your spouse or your children. If you are unable to commit to that, consider becoming a substitute adorer. All are welcome.
