Who is a Parishioner of Saint James Parish?

While the answer may seem obvious to some, others frequently ask for clarification on requirements for be-ing considered a parishioner. We hope the following helps those who may be unsure. First, a parishioner is formally registered with Saint James Parish. A faithful parishioner attends Mass regu-larly, participates in church activities, and follows the Canon Law admonition to contribute to the support of the parish. Parishioners have their children baptized here and en-roll them in our CCD program. Assuming they meet other requirements, they are eligible to receive parish certificates enabling them to serve as Godparents or Confirmation sponsors. They may be married here, and they may have their funerals here. Sometimes people assume they are parishioners be-cause they’ve been coming here for years, although they may have never formally registered. If you’re not sure if you are registered, please call Carole at the par-ish office: 860-643-4129.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD

IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

We Are Called to Be Saints Catholics often are drawn to saints due to their profes-sion, hobbies, or ethnic background. One’s patron saint serves as an example of how to live a life of holiness and service to God. We hold up the saints of the Church in high regard. However, we can sometimes make the mistake of seeing them as the subject of sto-ries in print and not real living people. We can assume that their level of devotion and holiness is unattaina-ble. In fact, we are all called to be saints. Our world needs more living saints living out their stewardship in a radical manner. Stories are valuable, but when others get to see disciples of Jesus Christ an-swering their call in person, consider the impact. There is a reason why lay witnessing is so important in culti-vating a stewardship culture in a parish community. The people we can see and hear are alive right in front of us. Some will say that to truly be humble means to act anonymously, but we are not speaking here of ac-tions that call out, “Look at me!” We are talking about acting in a way that people see not you and me, but Jesus instead. We are to be models and examples to one another. We are to build up one another and make the Body of Christ strong. Don’t sit back wishing you had the strength to be a saint. You have already been given the gifts needed to be the saint you are called to be. Maybe people will read about you later, but the Church needs you now! — Tracy Earl Welliver ©LPi

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

WORKING ON THE MARGINS

November 16/17, 2019

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our Archdiocese will soon take up the national collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Devel-opment (CCHD). Your support for this collection brings change to people across the country and empowers those living in poverty to transform their communities in ways that reflect the beatitudes of the Kingdom ofGod. In addition to making a national impact, we empower those living in poverty in our own archdiocese, because 25% of the funds we collect stay here. Keep the Promise is an organization in Connecticut receiving CCHD funding. The organization was established to enable and support those dealing with poverty due to addiction and/or mental health issues. Keep the Promise was formed as a result of the State’s failure to invest in services for those with mental health conditions so that they can successfully live in their communities. This resulted in an increase in incarcerations and homelessness among those dealing with addiction and mental health challenges. Keep the Promise provides leadership training so that members can advocate for the State funding needed to maintain state mental health services from which they will benefit. The organization helps to address the root causes of poverty among those with addiction and mental health issues. In the words of one member: “With all the public speaking I have learned, and with special thanks to Keep the Promise Coalition, it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Now I can coach and advocate others in learning how to find their voice.” Keep the Promise is just one example of the initiatives supported by the Campaign for Human Develop-ment. Your donation will help make a difference for people living in poverty across the United States. Please consider how you can help CCHD this year. For more information about the collection and the people it sup-ports, visit www.usccb.org/cchd/collection. Thank you for prayerfully and generously supporting this effort. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair Archbishop of Hartford
