Ron RobisonCommissionerWestern Hockey League

Greetings from the WHL

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

Jeff Chynoweth, President & Governor

TONIGHT’S OPPONENT‘TIPS BACK IN CONTENTIONAfter briefly moving into a tie for first place in the U.S. Division and the overall WHL standings Friday with a 3-2 win in their first meeting against Portland, the Silvertips enter tonight two points back of the Winterhawks at 34 points with one game in hand. The upstart Silvertips had earned points in seven consecutive games and won nine of 12 before falling 3-1 to Prince George on Saturday. Everett currently owns the league’s third-best winning percentage at .739, trailing only Kelowna (.842) and Portland (.750).ON THE ROAD AGAINTonight’s contest opens the second leg of Everett’s Central Division road swing, following a trip last month during which the team earned seven of eight possible points in Red Deer, Edmonton and Prince George. The four games on this trip will be played in a span of just five days, concluding a grueling stretch of ten games in 16 days for Everett. Following tonight’s game, the ‘Tips continue their 1,600-mile trek in Alberta with visits to Lethbridge tomorrow, Medicine Hat on Friday and Calgary on Saturday before returning home.LEADING THE CHARGEEverett’s top line of Josh Winquist, Manraj Hayer and Tyler Sandhu has been a lethal combination for opponents of late. Win-quist has been a force in his fifth season with the Silvertips, ranking fourth in the WHL in scoring with 40 points (17g/23a). 28 of those points (10g/18a) have come during an active 12-game point streak – the league’s longest active streak. Fourth-year Silvertip Manraj Hayer has collected 18 points (7g/11a) in the last 12 games, including a goal and an assist in Friday’s victory over Portland. Sandhu had a hat trick last week vs. Regina and another goal Friday vs. Portland, giving him 16 points (10g/6a) in the last 12 games.PUFAHL PAYING DIVIDENDSSilvertips captain Matt Pufahl is poised to cap off his junior career in style with a point-per game average so far in his overage season. Pufahl has already established a new career high with eight goals this season and has four points in the last three games to tie for 8th among all WHL defensemen with 22 points in 22 games this year. The first-year Silvertip has a +5 rating in the last eight games.INDIVIDUAL ACCOLADESFour Everett players (Dawson Leedahl, Austin Lotz, Ivan Nikolishin and Tyler Sandhu) were listed in last week’s latest NHL Central Scouting Watch List for the 2014 NHL Draft. Also coming last week was word that rookie defensemen Kevin Davis and Noah Juulsen have been named to Team Pacific for the 2014 World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Finally, forward Jujhar Khaira was recently named to Team WHL for next week’s 2013 Subway Super Series vs. Team Russia.
