St Lawrence’s Pilgrimage of the Jubilee of Mercy
In the midst of uncertainty and uneasiness, God still walks with us in many ways and we were given the opportunity to encounter Him. The Jubilee of Mercy has been a beautiful testimony for the Church and in the world of the immense love that our Triune God has for us.
We, the community of Saint Lawrence, were fortunate to experience the love and mercy of God on November 5th as we walked to Our Lady of Peace Shrine in pilgrimage to cross the Holy Door. Our journey started a couple of months ago with the planning of this. We were truly blessed to have had a good turnout early in the morning for confessions, followed by the Mass and then the actual walk. Approximately, 100 of our devoted community members walked together with some choosing to pray, sing and some who walked in silence. As we walked the San Tomas Trail, we were a testimony to the people that we encountered on our way, a testimony of unity. The pilgrimage was and is a reminder of our journey in life, a journey that we make with others, and a journey that will take us all to the same place to encounter the Trinity. A sincere thanks to all who participated and to our pastor, Fr. Ernesto, who accompanied us all the way. Especially in these days of uncertainty and uneasiness, may we, the St. Lawrence Community, continue to be a sign of God’s mercy and love to others.

Christ the King Sunday celebrates the all-embracing authority of Christ as King and Lord of the cosmos. It is officially called the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King.
Pope Pius XI instituted The Feast of Christ the King in 1925 in his encyclical, Quas Primas. Pope Pius connected the denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism. At the time of Quas Primas, secularism was on the rise, and many Christians doubted Christ's authority, as well as the Church's, and even doubted Christ's existence. Pius XI, and the rest of the Christian world, witnessed the rise of dictatorships in Europe, and saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly leaders.
Pius hoped the institution of the feast would have various effects. One of them was:
That the faithful would gain strength and courage from the celebration of the feast, as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies (Quas Primas, 33).
Christ's kingship is one of humility and service. Jesus said:
“You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:42-45, NAB).
Christ the King Sunday formerly was celebrated on the last Sunday of October, but since the calendar reforms of 1969, the feast falls on the last Sunday of Ordinary Time, which is the Sunday before Advent. It is fitting that the feast celebrating Christ's kingship is observed right before Advent, when we liturgically wait for the promised Messiah (King).

It is Christmas Giving Tree time again. This is our annual gift-giving opportunity to share presents for children in low income families who will have a brighter Christmas with our gifts. In the past, we have collected nearly 1,000 presents per year which are distributed through our partner, St. Justin’s.
Starting the weekend after Thanksgiving, the tree will be in the vestibule by the Church entrance. Please take an “ornament” and bring a gift appropriate for the age and gender noted on the ornament. Presents should not be wrapped as the families are given the opportunity to pick the presents that they want – then they are wrapped. Please bring your generous gifts and place them under the tree up until Sunday, December 11th, or to the Parish Office until Friday, December 16th when the presents will be taken to St. Justin’s for distribution. Your generosity will definitely make a difference. In the past, parishioners have been extremely generous and we look forward to your continued support to this meaningful endeavor. In addition, if you know of any needy families who could use gifts this year, St. Justin's will add names to their Christmas Client gift list starting on Wednesday, Nov 30 and take signups until Thursday, Dec. 8. Please contact the parish office or St. Vincent de Paul between those dates with any names for the list.

The Jubilee year will close with the liturgical Solemnity of Christ the King on 20 November 2016. On that day, as we seal the Holy Door, we shall be filled, above all, with a sense of
gratitude and thanksgiving to the Most Holy Trinity for having granted us an extraordinary time of grace. We will entrust the life of the Church, all humanity, and the entire cosmos to the Lordship of Christ, asking him to pour out his mercy upon us like the morning dew, so that everyone may work together to build a brighter future. (S5) Pope Francis - Misericordiae Vultus - Bull of Indiction of the Jubilee of Mercy
