A Blessing All Over AgainI’m writing to let you know that I am very grateful

to God for you and your course of 27 Bible StudyGuides. It’s been two years since I finished them, andI have my diploma on the wall to prove so. I want youto know that I frequently go back to them and findjust as much enjoyment and knowledge as when Ifirst started receiving and com-pleting them. Just recently I havegone back to Study Guide #8,“It’s Headed Straight TowardYou.” This was really a blessingall over again.

I Have Been ChangedLast night I finished watching the Millennium of

Prophecy seminar videotapes loaned to me by thepastor of the St. Paul First Church, which I have start-ed attending. I can’t put into words how this seminarhas changed my life. I have accepted Jesus as mySavior and am studying hard so that I can be bap-tized as soon as possible.

The Holy Spirit is at work in me. My husband andtwo young kids have noticed a change in me. FindingChrist has changed my life and probably saved mymarriage.

3NOVEMBER 2000 INSIDE REPORT

BY EDITOR

DEBRA J. HICKS Something unusual happened on one of myrecent trips from Tennessee to California. Mybody clock never made the transition from

Eastern to Pacific time. I normally have no troublesleeping straight through the night until daybreak, but during this particular week I awakened at 3o’clock sharp every morning.

I decided to make the best of it by going out to myfriends’ living room, where I could comfortably havemy morning devotions and do some stretching exer-cises without awakening anybody else.

The trouble with that plan was that my friends’ twobirds were sleeping in the living room, and turningon the light switch had the same effect as pressingthe play button on a high-amp cockatiel stereo sys-tem.

To my chagrin, turning the light back off wasn’tequivalent to pressing the stop button. The damagehad already been done. I had roused the little song-birds from their slumber, and there was no turningback. (I was relieved to find out later that my hostsare heavy sleepers and that the early-morning con-cert was a private one!)

This ritual took place every morning for eight days, and during that time I learned a lot by observing thetwo enthusiastic amateur musicians.

My friend Donna had named the older bird Danielbecause when she got him 10 years ago, she prayedthat God would keep the little captive safe from thetwo hungry cats that shared his home. Years laterRevelation, the younger bird, got his name becauseDonna’s husband had purchased him secretly oneday, and when she came home from work and foundhim in her office, it was indeed a revelation!

Both birds are great singers, but Daniel is undoubt-edly more experienced. He has a repertoire of threesongs: Here, Kitty Kitty, Dixie, and another numberhe composed himself that incorporates tunes hisowners have whistled to him through the years.

Revelation does his best to imitate his companion, but invariably he either skips a few key notes or elsehe gets creative and starts to slur two different songstogether.

A couple of hours into my first three-song cockatielconcert, the choleric side of my personality kickedin, and it was all I could do to refrain from correctingRevelation when he strayed from the score.

On several occasions I marveled at Daniel’sincredible patience. Not once did he chime in andtry to correct his understudy. Instead, he calmlywaited so Revelation could have his full turn in thespotlight.

Another thing I thought was neat was that no mat-ter how many times Revelation sang a song incor-rectly, Daniel never forgot the proper tune.Apparently those three songs have been so indeliblyetched in his memory that even countless hours ofhearing them wrong does not confuse his tiny bird-brain. He simply continues to sing the songs correct-ly when it’s his turn to perform, perhaps confidentthat Revelation will improve in time.

From Daniel to Revelation

I had roused the little songbirdsfrom their slumber, and there wasno turning back.

If we could learn to treat new believers the wayDaniel mentors Revelation, I bet many more peoplewould begin imitating the Christian life!

Successful teachers know that the most effectivemethod of instruction combines two key elements:example and practice. People can pick up a lot bywatching an experienced teacher do something correctly over and over again, so demonstration iscrucial. In addition, instructors must allow ampletime for them to practice—and make mistakes.

If you’re a professed Christian, then people arewatching you. The way you treat others will eitherhelp draw them to or repel them from Christ. Soremember the birds, and dare to be a Daniel!

II carry with me a photograph of a log cabin inWashington state. Although we visit this mountainretreat winter and summer, we never stay longenough for it to become a common place to us.

There’s a variety of wildlife on this mountain, fromthe faithful hummingbird sentinel at the top of a tall, leafless sapling to the elusive elk, whose hoof printstell us they frequent the top of our mountain. Someare industrious, like the crew of five chipmunks whovolunteered one morning to clean up the grass seedwe had scattered next to the house. Others are indo-lent, like the packrat who had to be evicted for poorhousekeeping. All teach us valuable lessons from ourCreator’s book of Nature.

Queen of DeceptionOne day last summer, my husband came in from a

walk and told me he had been chased by a chicken. This wasn’t any ordinary barnyard hen; it was a wildmountain chicken. The correct name is ruffedgrouse, but they’re commonly called partridge in ourmountains. The male is heard seasonally in the dis-tance, beating his wings together so as to imperson-

An Amazing Fact:A woman who had just returned from a trip to Mexicofrantically called the Los Angeles Police Department to

report that a live rattlesnake had been placed in herovernight bag. Police went rushing to the scene withsirens screaming. They slowly approached the menacingbag, which the woman had heaved out of a window ontothe sidewalk. Cautiously they scattered the contents ofthe bag—only to trace the rattling sound to her electric

toothbrush, which had accidentally turned on!

ate a lawn mower starting up. But the female is thequeen of deception.

Kim had encountered the Mamma Hen not farfrom the cabin. Fearing he was after her chicks andapparently wanting to compensate for her small size, this hen’s bold, protective instincts drove her toassume a clever disguise. She fluffed and bristled upher feathers to their fullest volume and ran at Kimfor all she was worth.

Before he had a chance to get a good look at hisattacker, which was obscured by the tall grass, Kim’sfight-or-flight mechanism kicked in and he followedhis instinct to run. However, eventually he lookedback and realized he was being chased by a chicken. And, of course, he came to his senses and stoppedrunning.

I enjoyed his story. Then, a few weeks later as Iwent walking by myself, I heard a flutter and turnedto see a huge, dark, mysterious creature hurtlingitself down the hill toward me at breakneck speed.Naturally, I did what most sensible folk would do—run now and figure it out later!

I ran about 20 feet, realized it was just MammaHen again, and then stopped. She had already slowedher pace considerably since I was cooperating byrunning for my life. After all, she needn’t waste timepursuing someone who no longer posed a threat tobaby partridges. When I looked back and saw her, still facing me with feathers fluffed to the max, it washilarious. I wished I’d had a video camera.

Chickens really ought to run from us. We’re biggerthan they are, and if we wanted to we could havethem for lunch. If my husband and I had not beentaken by surprise, we could have faced the chickenand she would have run from us. Next time, we con-sole ourselves, we’ll do better. We’ll know she is noth-ing to fear.

glanced out the window. There was a black bear atthe edge of our yard where the woods start. Wewatched as he turned toward us, perfectly framed inthe picture window like a Montana postcard.

Dave, the original owner and builder of our cabin, said a bear had visited his property about once ayear when he lived there. With true mountain story-telling flair, he described the snowy night he hadplayed tag with Blackie around the trash can, armedonly with a broom.

If Blackie comes around just once a year, we fig-ured he would probably visit while we’re gone, whichis most of the time. We hadn’t really expected to seehim ever, and after seeing him once, we knew thechances of seeing him again that year were very slim.

I had two deeply held theories about the bear. Onewas that if I ever met up with him away from thehouse, he would turn and run—or at least lumber—in the opposite direction. The other theory was thathe lived on the other side of the mountain and rarelyvisited the side where people live.

One Monday before breakfast I took my usual half-mile walk down the mountain to our nearest neigh-bor’s driveway. I started running, but halfway down Islowed to a walk, talking with God and feeling free.As I rounded the switchback, I saw Blackie. He wasabout the same distance from me as he had been thefirst time. However, now there was no protection oflog walls separating us. He and I were on the sameroad, and then he turned and faced me.

At that moment, my number one theory aboutbears evaporated. Blackie did not run, lumber, oreven amble away from me. In fact, he began to movetoward me! I quickly decided to turn around andstarted running home. The major problem with thisdecision was that my run uphill is more like a slowwalk—not exactly spinning my wheels, but close toit. Where was all that adrenaline you’re supposed tobe able to count on in an emergency?

5NOVEMBER 2000 INSIDE REPORT

A Master of SurpriseBeing tempted by the devil is a lot like being

chased by a chicken. He hides in the tall grass, fluffshimself up and charges at you, hoping you won’t rec-ognize how small he is in comparison with yourSavior. He catches you off guard, when you’re think-ing about something else. Your first reaction is torun, but if you stood up to him in the name of JesusChrist, he’d run from you. It reminds me of the lionsin the book Pilgrim’s Progress, which frightened poorChristian one night with their deafening roarbecause he couldn’t see that they were securelychained.

God’s Word tells us we can call the devil’s bluff!“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James4:7). We can face the tempter in God’s strength andJesus’ name, and he must go. However, like any skill, resisting the devil requires practice. We are naturallyinclined to do things his way. Even after we are bornfrom above and have new motives and purposes, wemust continually choose to walk after the Spirit andnot after the flesh.

The crafty deceiver has been practicing his art for6,000 years and has mastered the element of sur-prise. In order to help us discern the enemy’s varieddeceptions, God gives us opportunities every day todevelop habits of resisting. It’s the power of choicethat needs to be trained.

Bothered by a BearThe forest service trailheads around our home post

signs showing the difference between a black bearand a brown bear. The brown bear, or grizzly, is dan-gerous. Black bears, on the other hand, generallyhave a meeker reputation. They’re more scared of youthan you are of them. They can’t see very well, sounless you get between a mother and her cubs, theyare not very aggressive. At least, that’s what I’ve beentold.

One evening, Kim and I were peacefully readingtogether, resting securely inside our cabin’s thick logwalls. I went to the kitchen for a glass of water and

An Amazing Fact:The ruffed grouse is one of the smallest of 10 species of

grouse native to North America, weighing from 17 to 25ounces. These brownish-colored birds are somewhat larg-er than pigeons, living their entire lives in wooded areas. When the cock is in full display—either in defense of histerritory or when showing off to an interested hen—itslong, shiny neck feathers are extended into a spectacularruff which, together with a full fanned tail, makes himlook twice his normal size.

I eventually rounded the bend and headed home, praying. Twice I looked back. Blackie had not yetmade the curve. I figured that if I saw him behindme, I could start planning my funeral. Then I heard acommotion in the woods to my left, which meant thebear was no longer on the road. He had headed upthe mountain a different way, for which I was mostgrateful.

I stopped, and the noise stopped too. What to do? Icalculated that if Blackie was headed uphill by thedirect route, he’d hit the road just about where itcurves again in front of our house. I might meet himthere. I waited a minute or so and didn’t hear any-thing, so I started walking toward home. I was out ofbreath when I got there, but I was safe. Problemsolved.

Facing Our FearsNow that my top two theories about bears were

utterly demolished, how could I ever again walk themountain unafraid?

Years ago, I read that when Ernest Hemingway meta bear in the woods, he talked to it. That didn’t

seem a useful option for me, so I decided toconsult the experts and consider my alterna-tives.

Here are the options I came up with:1. Play dead.2. Jump up and down, making as much

noise as possible. (I don’t know how I wouldcombine these first two.)

3. Sing while walking.4. Run downhill, because bears aren’t good

at that. (Their front legs are shorter than theirback ones.)

That last one held promise, but what if thebear just tumbled down the hill and steam-rolled me? I also thought of getting a dog, then a gun (to fire into the air, not to shootthe bear). But what goes up must come down.

What Would Jesus Do? “Some trust in chari-ots, and some in horses: but we will remem-ber the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm20:7). I choose to trust in God, since “Theangel of the Lord encampeth round aboutthem that fear Him, and delivereth them”(Psalm 34:7). Had I not been already deliv-ered from the bear in answer to my prayer? Why walk in fear, when “God hath not givenus the spirit of fear” (2 Timothy 1:7)? I con-cluded that the same God who deliveredDaniel from the lions and David from thebear could still protect me.

Not Playing by the RulesBoth the chicken chase and the bear scare

were true-to-life object lessons. The bear

INSIDE REPORT NOVEMBER 2000

didn’t obey the rules of nature, which said he shouldrun away. He scared me; but unlike the chicken, hereally was bigger than me. It looked as if he were com-ing after me, but it was all a bluff. It worked; I ran.

In a similar way, when I come face-to-face with thedevil, he doesn’t seem to know that the rules say heshould run away. He scares me, and he’s bigger than Iam. It looks as if he’s coming after me, so I run, which is just what he wants me to do.

But wait. The promise that the devil will flee isdependent on me doing something first. James liststhree events in order (James 4:7):

1. Submit yourself to God.2. Resist the devil.3. He will flee from you.The devil doesn’t flee till I do two things: submit

and resist. Submitting and resisting are opposites. AsI submit to one, I resist the other. Submit to God,resist the devil. Submit to the devil, resist God.

Only after we submit to God do we have the faithand power to resist the devil.

The next verse adds two additional events:4. Draw nigh [near] to God.5. He will draw nigh to you.Once again, it is my turn first. I choose my master.

God has already made the promise, and He will notforce Himself on me.

Doing My PartTo sum it up, I have three things to do. Submit,

resist, and draw near. Submitting and drawing nearto God are habits the Christian should cultivate everywaking moment. They are also called surrender andcommunion. If I really trust God, I will surrendereverything I have and am to Him. Of course, themain thing He wants me to surrender is my will.

Submit means “yield.” Surrender means “give up.”In practical terms, it means I pray and give myself—my life, my will, my allegiance, my thoughts, myplans, my time, my talents, my money, my stuff, myeverything—to God every day. It’s all His now, andHe’s in control. At the point of temptation, I repeatthe surrender, giving my will to God in that verything I’m tempted on and giving up all my rights andpreferences regarding it.

If I’m tempted to covet my neighbor’s house, I needto yield my will to God, following the example of Jesusin the garden when He said,“Thy will be done”(Matthew 26:42). This surrender must include the par-ticular area of my life where there’s a temptation: hous-es. Knowing that Jesus had no place to lay His head, Ichoose by His grace to be willing to follow Him.

Sometimes I may not really be willing, so I mustsurrender my unwillingness too, saying,“Lord, I’mwilling to be made willing to live as You lived on thisearth. Please make me willing.” And He will becauseI’ve submitted myself to God.

An Amazing Fact:The black bear’s name

is deceptive. It is a speciesname and does not referto the animal’s color. Inactuality, black bears canrange in color from pureblack to cinnamon toblonde. Black bears inthe East are nearly black, while those in the Westare black to cinnamonwith a white blaze ontheir chests. The blackbears in Alaska can evenhave a blue or whitecolor phase to help themblend with their snowysurroundings.

Get up (Micah 7:8). If you take your eyes off Jesusand start to sink, then look back to Him, and likePeter say,“Lord, save me!” John wrote his secondepistle so we wouldn’t sin, but he added that if we dosin, Jesus is our advocate (1 John 2:1). If we confessour sin, He forgives and cleanses us (1 John 1:9).

Peter said that we escape corruption by claimingGod’s promises (2 Peter 1:4). Yet he recognized thatoften we are deceived by the devil into forgettingwe’ve been cleansed, or purged, from our old sins (2 Peter 1:9). We act as if we were still in bondage toour old habits, when in fact we have been set free. Welet the bear bully us.

Doesn’t faith play some part in this? Yes, the Biblesays our faith is the victory that overcomes the world(1 John 5:4). A favorite trick of the devil is to con-vince us that we don’t have enough faith. However,Jesus said that if we had faith as a grain of mustardseed (Matthew 17:20; Luke 17:6), we could accom-plish amazing things.

We don’t need a lot of faith; we just need to exer-cise the faith we have, and it will grow. Faith is thegift of God (Ephesians 2:8). The Bible says that everyone of us has a measure of it (Romans 12:3), so alack of faith is not the problem. God merely asks usto exercise the faith He has given us.

What is the problem, then? Sometimes it’s notspending enough time at the cross. Without a vividsense of God’s love for us, we lack motivation to sub-mit to God, resist the devil, and draw near to God. Ifwe daily take time to prayerfully consider Jesus’ sac-rifice, God’s love will be increasingly real to us, and“He which hath begun a good work in you will per-form it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians1:6). In other words, when we know we are walkinghand-in-hand with Jesus, we will not panic everytime we are chased by a chicken or bluffed by a bear.

Next time you’re under attack, stand your groundin the armor of God (Ephesians 6:11), and let thedevil do the running.

7NOVEMBER 2000 INSIDE REPORT

The second thing I must do is to resist the devil. It’snot enough just to submit. Submission must be fol-lowed by action. Too often we concede the battle bysaying,“I don’t have the strength to resist. That’s mywhole problem.”

Not true. If we believe God’s Word, that’s not theproblem at all. Having strength is not our part. It isGod’s part. He has promised a way to escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). He is a present help in trouble(Psalm 46:1). I can do all things through Christ whostrengthens me (Philippians 4:13). He is able to keepyou from falling (Jude 24). Only when we are withoutChrist are we powerless.

No, strength is not even an issue. The promise is:Resist, and the devil will flee (James 4:7). You haven’tbeen asked to engage in hand-to-hand combat withthe devil. The battle with the devil is not yours, butGod’s (2 Chronicles 20:15).

But isn’t there a struggle? Yes, we have all experi-enced it. However, the struggle is not with the devil. The struggle is with self. The struggle comes beforewe surrender. Once the full surrender is made, self isdead and struggles no more.

The third thing we do is draw close to God. Someof the sweetest communion we can enjoy with God iswhen we immediately pour out our thanks to Himfor victory over temptation. God is very real to usthen.

It’s simple. Submit to God. Resist the devil, then thedevil flees. Draw near to God, then God draws nearto you. Do you remember the parable of the prodigalson? As soon as the father saw his son coming home,he ran to meet him (Luke 15:20).

Staying in FocusWhat if I mess up? What if somehow I don’t do my

part and fall under temptation. The answer is simple.

An Amazing Fact:Although the largest of all land carnivores,

bears produce the smallest young of anymammal. For example, a 440-pound polarbear will give birth to one or two cubs weigh-ing a little over 1 pound each. Newborn cubsweigh only about 1/420th as much as theirmothers, whereas newborn humans weighabout 1/20th as much as their mothers.

G uy and Theresa DeJager were baptized inWyoming, Mich., on June 24, 2000. They praiseGod that Amazing Facts supporters have a

vision for television ministry because, as Theresasays, “The media is a great way to reach people whoare looking for more truth.”

The DeJagers hadn’t heard of Amazing Facts orDoug Batchelor until the day they found the NETNew York ’99 meetings while randomly flippingthrough channels on their TV set at home. Since theyhad their Bibles handy, they started looking up theScriptures and quickly saw that what he was sayingadded up.

The fourth time they watched, Doug Batchelor saidthat he was part of a movement that most closelymatched the Bible in its beliefs.“That grabbed ourattention,” Theresa recalls.“It seemed to be a directanswer to our prayers. We looked up that church inthe yellow pages, and it turned out that it was nearthe church we used to attend.”

When they contacted PastorPhilip Colburn, he invited themto church the next morning andsuggested that they start a Biblestudy. At the time, Guy wasworking as a sales associate foran auto parts store and oftenworked on Saturdays. However,God worked it out for him to beoff that Sabbath so they wereable to visit the new churchtogether.

“We had been in a charismaticchurch for quite awhile,”Theresa explains,“so it was verydifferent from what we wereused to. But the people at the

church made a big impression on us. They were sogenuine and so kind.”

Guy and Theresa say they have experienced count-less blessings as a result of the truths they firstlearned through watching NET ’99. For example, Guywas convicted that he should keep the Lord’s dayholy so he asked his boss if he could have Saturdaysoff. By law Guy’s employer had to grant it to him, buthis boss wasn’t happy about it. The end result? Hepromoted Guy to a better position as parts managerin the brake shop!

Another happy surprise God had in store for theDeJagers was an opportunity to meet Doug Batchelorduring a convention in Grand Rapids, Mich., thisAugust. Beverly Colburn, their pastor’s wife, hadinvited them to accompany her so they could seewhat a large church they had just joined. AmazingFacts had set up a booth there, so they got to meetPastor Batchelor and share their conversion story.“Tomeet the person who helped us make such a life-changing decision was wonderful,” said Theresa.

J ust over a year ago, Teresita Ongkingco wasworking as a nurse in New York City’s Hospitalfor Special Surgery when a co-worker invited

her to attend the live NET New York ’99 meetings atManhattan Center Studios. She decided to go.

As Teresita attended the nightly meetings, theHoly Spirit began to speak to her heart. She recalls:“My eyes were opened at the meetings. I knew Iwas being exposed to truth.” On Nov. 27, 1999,Teresita was baptized.

Before she moved to the United States, Teresitawas a Catholic nun in the Philippines. Althoughactive in mission work, she says she never pos-sessed a clear understanding of the Bible.“I spent21 years as a nun in a Catholic convent, but I neverlearned the Bible truths,” she laments.

Teresita first learned of SabbathkeepingChristians in 1975 when she took an advancednursing course at a Protestant university in Manila, where she made many friends. Although impressedwith the friendliness, simplicity, and fervor of theseChristians, she never dreamed she would join theirchurch.

When Teresita’s family learned of her decision tobe baptized, they were shocked. “You need to con-sult a priest about this decision!” they demanded.Every time Teresita tried to share a newly discov-ered truth with her family, they would not listen. She prays that someday they will allow the HolySpirit to awaken them to the truth.

At the Millennium of Prophecy meetings, Teresitawas impressed with the importance of modesty, the health message, and the Ten Commandments. However, she says her greatest joy was the realiza-tion that “I could go directly to Jesus in prayer.”Now, one year after the Amazing Facts series,

Former Nun Was in Audienceat Manhattan Center

Teresita strives to deepen her understanding oftruth by studying the Bible and reading the Spiritof Prophecy. She also seeks to share her new faithwith others.

“After the NET ’99 meetings,” Teresita explains,“Ithought it would be great to be involved in full-time evangelism like the Amazing Facts evangelistsare, but then I realized that I could be a missionaryright here in New York.”

Teresita frequently shares her testimony in NewYork City churches, and she is involved in a PrayerWarriors group that travels throughout the stateholding prayer conferences and is organizing amission trip to Africa next year. Teresita’s greatesthope is that she can serve Christ by “spreading theeverlasting gospel to others.”

Bulgarian Teenager InvitesInternet Friend to Meetings

God used the beautiful music and contagious smile of pianist KellySmith Mowrer to win a former evangelist and his wife back to Him.

M y name is Mira, and I was born and raised inBulgaria, where I still live. After hearing yourpreaching series through the satellite, I

decided to tell you that I am very impressed with whatI have heard. I would like to tell you about how Ibecame close to my personal Savior, Jesus Christ.

When you live outside of thechurch, life is useless. Too manyyoung people think that worldlygarbage is very attractive. I tastedsome of that garbage when I wasyounger.

One day my mother came homeand told me that she was going toa Sabbathkeeping church. She saidthat she was very impressed by thesermon and the songs. She askedme to go at least one time, so Iwent to the NET ’98 evangelisticseries, gave my heart to Jesus, andwas buried in the watery grave.

Soon after that I met a youngman on the Internet and weexchanged our e-mail addressesand started writing to one another.I invited him to come to yourseries, Millennium of Prophecy, and he was baptized April 1, 2000.

My mother was baptized too on Sept. 9, 2000. I amthankful to God that He chose you, Pastor Batchelor,as a wonderful servant of His Word.

—Mira Mihova

My older son, Les, who was raised a Sabbath-keeping Christian and attended parochialschools, left the church for many years. All

during that time, earnest prayers for his return to theLord were sent heavenward.

He met a lovely woman named Charlene who hadbeen raised a Catholic, and they set their weddingdate for Feb. 14, 2000. After I invited them to theMillennium of Prophecy seminar, they attendedmost of the meetings and were thrilled with the mes-sages. They ordered the video series and are lookingforward to receiving them. They also ordered PastorDoug Batchelor’s A New Revelation video series thattook place at Andrews University several years agoand have many of his audio tapes.

On May 20, 2000, Charlene was baptized and myson Les was rebaptized. They are both on fire for theLord and are spreading the news that Jesus is comingsoon. I definitely credit NET ’99 as the beginning oftheir conversion. The Lord is so good, and my heartis filled with joy.

13NOVEMBER 2000 INSIDE REPORT

“God Used Me!”

Delbert and Carolyn Haulk (left) live right next to thenew church in Brownsburg, Ind., so they decided tovisit it during the NET New York ’99 satellite seriesproduced by Amazing Facts. This summer theywere baptized by Pastor Peter Kulakov.

Ihad a very special experience in July and wantedto thank Amazing Facts again for the opportunityto be involved with NET New York ’99.

In Arkansas I met a man who was in very poorhealth. The week before he had been in the hospitaland near death. He is waiting for a liver transplant, but when he heard I’d be at camp meeting, he wasdetermined to come see me.

He told me that years ago he and his wife used tobe in evangelism but that he grew burned out andleft the ministry and the church. For more than 15years he worked as an undercover drug agent for thegovernment. He told me he “grew hard.” But last fallhe caught a glimpse of NET ’99 during a song, andthe music caught his attention immediately. It

reminded him of his past days in evangelism. He was particularly drawn by the piano and kept

wishing they would show a shot of the pianist. Whenthe camera finally came on me, he said,“And sud-denly, there you were, and you were SMILING! I justfelt something break apart inside me, and I knewright then I wanted to come back to the Lord.” Hetold me that he and his wife are now back in thechurch and looking forward to doing more for Godonce he regains his health.

As a pianist, I’ve always figured that my ministry ischiefly to the singer and to the pastor so that theycan minister to the people. When I hear a story likethis where God used me to specifically reach some-one, it just makes it all worthwhile! Thanks for amemory I’ll treasure forever.

—Kelly Smith Mowrer,a pianist for the Millennium of Prophecy seminar

Several months have passed since your tremen-dous series of satellite meetings scatteredthemselves like leaves across the world. I have

wanted to write and thank you for the inspiration andfor the powerful way in which the truth of God wasshared with the world.

You have a unique way and a special ministry thatgets inside people living in this generation. The mes-sages were Christ-centered and filled with love. Thesermons were spiritually digestable and nourishingto the soul. Each evening brought a new awareness ofthe love of God to us all. Your series was tops!

Two years before satellite evangelism came to ourchurch in Brownsburg, Indiana, about 30 members

Lay Church Leader in IndianaSays Our “Series Was Tops!”

had built a new facility through prayer and faith. Thesatellite system was installed in September of 1999,just in time for NET New York ’99. Your series wasthe first we could downlink, and we were pleasedwith the outcome.

Delbert and Carolyn Haulk, who live across theroad from the church, decided during the crusade tobe baptized, and after Bible studies they joined ourchurch in early June. In a couple weeks we will bap-tize another couple, and two other adults will be com-ing along soon. Your series also caused three mem-bers who had wandered away from the program ofGod to choose rebaptism. Seeds keep springing up!

Three sets of the Millennium of Prophecy video-tapes are being circulated, and we count our bless-ings for having heard God’s truth through the lifeand lips of Pastor Doug Batchelor.
