I am sure she would love to have her picture taken with you. There are many excellent speakers sched- uled to make presentations at the fall confer- ence. You will learn many lessons and meet many people as you attend the educational sessions and mingle with your fellow district 25 toastmasters. Sometimes it is a conversa- tion in the hall that ends up helping your club get new members and meet educational re- quirements sooner. Sharing ideas is a vital part of this conference. This contest season, I attended 27 of the 29 area contests and all the Division contests. I have tremendous respect for the speakers of District 25. I have great respect for the win- ners of the contests because they worked long and hard to prepare and deliver their winning presentation. Each deserved the prestigious trophy they were presented. However, I found a new respect for the sev- eral at each contest who did not win, or did they? If they stepped into their fear to make their presentation and now have an extra dose of confidence in themselves they did not have before, they, too, were winners. Watch out next year, these speakers will have the confidence to thrust themselves into the spotlight again and step into their fear again. They just may have a winning presentation and a prestigious trophy to show for their efforts. So I invite you to the confer- ence on November 17 and 18. To save each of you 20 dollars, we have extended the pre-registration dead- line. All you have to do to get the pre-registration price is to print and com- plete the registration application located on the website at: http:// www.d25toastmasters.org/pdfs/ Fall_Conference_Registration_Form.pdf and mail it to 2006 Fall Conference Registration, Attn: Greg Wyatt, 859 Lindbergh Lane, Grand Prairie, TX 75051. Now that the speech contests are over, we can all look with anticipation to the District 25 Fall Conference. The conference is where the district’s business is conducted, hence the invitation to each club to bring their votes in person or send them by proxy to the busi-ness meeting by a member of their club on Saturday, November 18 at 4:30 p.m. For those attending the conference, but do not want to attend the business meeting, you will be privileged to hear an exciting presentation by Miss Texas. I have great respect for the win-ners of the contests because they worked long and hard to prepare and deliver their winning presentation. Each deserved the prestigious trophy they were presented. You have probably heard the phrase: "If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got." I am issuing a special invitation to all those District 25 Toastmasters who have never attended a District Conference!! You need to attend and see what you have been missing. See the conference open with the Parade of Club Banners. There are not one, not two, not three, but 15 Education Sessions being offered! The two

International Director candidates from Region III for the 2007-2009 term will also be present and each is presenting an educa-tion session. Ralph Wallace, 2nd year International Director from Region III will also be presenting an education session and will be delivering a keynote address at lunch on Saturday, November 18. The newly crowned Miss Texas will also be in attendance. The Division Contests winners will participate in the District's Table Topics contest on Friday night and the Humorous Speech contest on Saturday afternoon. The District's newest Distinguished Toastmasters (the highest Toastmasters individual recognition available) will be recognized in a special Saturday night cere-mony. My own Toastmasters horizons were hugely expanded when I attended my first District Conference in 1997 and my current Toastmasters experience could not have existed without it. Fellow District 25 Toastmasters (especially those who have never attended a District Conference), I look forward to seeing you at the Conference. Registration forms are available at www.d25toastmasters.org. For those who have attended before, come experience the conference again, for the first time.

Come One, Come All to This Fall’s District 25 Conference!! Maurice Taitt, DTM – Lieutenant Governor Education and Training

Fellow District 25 Toastmasters: Welcome your Area Governors for their club visits. They are every clubs’ mentors. As we stretched to have all the clubs submit their dues on time, we are seeing the need for retention. The importance of retaining our seasoned Toastmasters is imperative. Now is the time to focus on building the clubs back to charter strength and starting new clubs. TI has some very valuable promotional material designed to help your club attract the members you need to continue succeeding. Look for “Finding Your Voice”, “Confidence, the Voice of Leadership” and “From Prospect to Guest to Member” all available from WHQ for a minimal charge. Club coaches are being assigned to all clubs, that are below twelve members, if they so desire. Club coaches are assigned by the District Governor to assist clubs that are striving to reach distinguished and are having difficulties building or maintaining membership. Club coaches may be assigned at any time during the year. Part of the district’s mission is to ensure that each club effectively fulfills responsibilities to its members. In order to achieve this, the district must establish and maintain positive and supportive relations with each club. Area governors play a critical role in preserving this relationship via the area club visits, which are required twice a year. Area governors should complete their first round visit between July 1 and October 31 with a formal report due to TI no later than November 30.

Get Ready for Club Elections If your club elects officers semiannually, it’s not too early to think about upcoming elections. Here’s a helpful timetable: ►Before September 30: Appoint a Nominating Committee (see Club Bylaws). The committee is to be run by the immediate past president or the most recent past president available. ►Last Meeting in October: The Nominating Committee reports to the club. ►First Meeting in November: Call for the Nominating Committee Report. (If the Nominating Committee does not have a report at the last meeting in October, postpone the election until one week after the meeting at which the report is given.) ►Call for nominations from the floor: Nominations begin with the last president and proceed in descending order. Remember, a quo-rum is 51 percent of active members. ►Announce the results. All clubs must be on a July 1 – June 30 annual term, or on July 1 – December 31 and January 1–June 30 semiannual terms. (Please note: Clubs that meet weekly have the option of electing officers for either a semiannual term or an annual term. Clubs that meet less frequently must elect officers for annual terms.) Holding elections at any other time is in direct conflict with the Club Constitu-tion. If your club elections are not in compliance with the timetable, now is the time to change and meet constitution stan-dards. Once the officers have been elected, go to the TI Web site, access the Club Business section and add your club’s offi-cers online! Remember to order club officer pins and plaques of appreciation for your officer installation ceremony. Check the 2006 supply catalog for a complete list of items and prices or place your order online at www.toastmasters.org.

It was a Friday night, Sept. 22, 2006. Time to begin the weekend with family and friends. The list of activities available are long and I see an additional activity, Toastmaster Area 14 Humorous Speech and Table Topics Roundup. My choice was made, a free night out with the opportunity to round up one of those free door prizes. We arrived at 7 p.m., got signed in and found an unexpected windfall of food to satisfy every taste bud. After quickly filling a plate, grabbing a drink and a program we ventured into the auditorium to find a seat. It was nearing 7:30 p.m., contest start time, and 54 excited individuals filled the room ready for the roundup to begin. The event opened with the Pledge, Invocation and Introductions of Toastmasters and Dignitaries. As the contest speaking order was announced the level of excitement began to rise, causing a slight heat situation within the room, however, nothing unbearable. The auditorium was filled with laughter and appreciation as each contestant completed their time in the spotlight. The judges worked to pick the winners and runner ups while the audience enjoyed the contestant interviews. The time had arrived for the results and the announcement came: Humorous Speech Area 14 1st Place Robert Davis, Fossil Creek 2nd Place Betty Miller, BNSF 3rd Place James Bratton, BNSF Expressed Table Topics Area 14 1st Place Jamey Rider, EFW 2nd Place David Heywood, BNSF 3rd Place Wayne Sekerke, FAA I had completely enjoyed each and every contestant as I found myself totally off base on the finishing order, I did however round up one of those free door prizes. The contest received great reviews from many of the dignitaries and guests. We all wished the 1st and 2nd place winners the very best as they proceeded to the next level contest.

Toastmasters teaches us amazing lessons.. Being a leader at your job, your club and your district requires effectiveness. It means being a role model while engaging, empower-ing and unleashing your team. Toastmasters gives you the avenues to grow your leadership skills. It is up to you to effectively interact with your team and project your vision into the results you have in mind. This program builds on the Toastmasters: Simply Amazing theme with amazing lessons in the Toastmas-ters World.

Are you in tune with your R-factor? Under-standing who we are as Toastmasters…what we really do from a non-Toastmaster perspective…and why what we do is im-portant – this session explores these three elements and how they serve as the building blocks to creating repeatable, remarkable performance as members, clubs and districts.

International Director Ralph Wallace, DTM

Fall Conference Education Session Highlights

Successful club environments are where members learn, grow and have fun. It is important that our members never lose sight of their goals and responsibilities to the club. It is equally important for clubs to provide a positive environment for their members to achieve their personal goals. When we nurture our members they will: flourish as they develop new skills, harvest many successes, and share their positive experience with others. Charlotte Howard

District 25 E-mail Distribution Mailing List

Did you know that we have over 2000 members in District 25 and approximately 500 members do not have an email listed and over 300 members have incorrect email addresses? Starting in October, the District has been setting up an email distri-bution list that will be used solely for communicating important information to clubs about upcoming district sponsored train-ing, district business, and special events. Of course, this list will also be used to send out the District 25 monthly newsletter. In the coming days an automated email will be sent to you from [email protected] asking you to verify your email address and requesting to be added to the District 25 email list. If you want to stay informed and receive communica-tion from the district, you must verify your email address with the provided link in the email. Members who do not wish to receive emails can simply disregard the email. It should also be noted that if you choose to subscribe to the newsletter, you can always unsubscribe in the future.

Toastmaster Holiday Shopping Mary Feltman, DTM - Div. D Governor I know that the holiday season is soon upon us. This means time for shopping. (YEAH! I love to shop.) I have the perfect gift idea for that diffi-cult-to-buy-for-person. Buy them a Toastmaster a membership. What about for that person who has so very many so’s, and’s and ahhhh’s …. to the point that it is even irritating already? I know that you have been trying to figure out how you can get them to commit to Toastmasters. The solution is simple, buy a membership for them. You already know that once someone joins Toastmasters, they realize what a cool organization it is and stay. You know, become a Toastmaster for life. This is a win-win situation. You find that difficult gift and most importantly, you help someone to communicate better. I guess that means I will be shopping at www.D25Toastmasters.org. Where will you be shopping? You Can’t Talk About That!

Members often tell us that other Toastmasters have told them that speeches concerning politics, religion and sex are forbidden by Toastmasters International because "such controversial subjects are not appropriate." This is not true. Toastmasters International does not prohibit any speech topic, content or language. Toastmasters International recognizes club members may learn much about the world around them from listening to others’ speeches on a variety of subjects. This variety can add interest to club meetings and stimulate thoughts and ideas. For these reasons, Toastmasters International does not place restrictions on topics, content, or language of any speeches. It also recognizes that a club is a diverse group of people and recommends members be sensitive to this diversity and use good taste and responsibility when selecting speech topics, content, and language. While Toastmasters International has no restrictions, a club may guide its members on how to observe good taste and sensitivity in the context of that particular club.

Here Come Da Judge, Here Come Da Judge! Rick Sharon, DTM - District 25 Chief Judge

We could be saying that about YOU, if you were a contest Judge. Why would anyone want to judge contests? • For the experience – it’s fun! I have met so many incredible Toastmasters from other clubs through Judging Area, Division, and District speech contests! Many of my fellow judges have become close friends! The humorous speeches I’ve judged this season alone have made me laugh so hard, they brought me to tears! • To become a better speaker The caliber of my speeches and communication skills improved greatly and quickly once I began competing in speech contests. Soon after beginning I was winning Club and Area contests. By judging contests, I was able to learn a lot more about the judging criteria and to study exceptional competitors. The insights I gained enabled me to take my performance to the “next level” – to win contests at the Division and District levels of competition. I continue to learn from every contest I judge. • For the honor At the Spring Contests YOU can help select the next World Champion of Public Speaking. How cool would it be if someone you judged became the next World Champion? • To “give back” to the organization Toastmasters has helped you a lot and will help you a lot. Nobody gets paid for doing that, we are all volunteers. Volunteering your time to judge contests is a wonderful way to help the organization that has helped you so much – to help your fellow Toastmasters. Did I mention: It’s a lot of fun? How do you become a Judge or Chief Judge? Simple! Attend Judge and Chief Judge training at the December or January Toastmasters Leadership Summit. See you there? If you are already a trained Judge or Chief Judge and are wondering why we have not contacted you this season, please contact:

Rick Sharon DTM, District 25 Chief Judge at [email protected]. Your training may have lapsed or we may have obsolete contact information for you. Rick can fix that as well as answer any questions you may have.

Some Helpful Guidelines for Submitting Articles for Voices: • It’s usually best to use the inverted pyramid style. Write the material from most significant to least significant

so the editor (or the reader) can cut it off at any point (or any time) and know that the most important part has been covered.

• Try to stay under 500 words (but don’t worry about it). • If possible, include pictures, along with information about who is in the picture and what is going on. • If formatting is important, use Word, but plain email is fine too. • If there are more than a couple of pictures, compress them and attach the compressed file. Now get those articles in! Deadline for submittals is the last Monday of the month. All articles are subject to editing.

The club officer training classes just keep getting better and better! Your next opportunity to attend training (and you DON’T have to be an officer to attend) is December 9. District 25 has the good fortune to have the support of IBM by letting us use their building. Directions and details can be found online at www.d25toastmasters.org. Registration begins promptly at 7:30AM and classes begin at 8:30AM. Speed up your registration by registering online at: www.d25toastmasters.org/tls.

Directions: There is only one IBM building at 1177 Beltline Road location. It's the IBM Dallas Sales Center, in Cop-pell. There are "three" flag poles on the East side of the building (entrance from Beltline). However, when you turn into the parking lot, go around to the "West" entrance (back of building). This is where the cafeteria is located and where we will hold the general session.

DISTRICT 25 PRESENTS THE WINTER TOASTMASTERS LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

DECEMBER 9, 2006

If Your Club Elects Its Officers Semiannually ...it's time to submit a list of your club's officers for the January 2007 through June 2007 term. The fastest, most efficient way to notify WHQ is to submit the information online. You can enter the club business portal by clicking on "club business" in the left-hand column on the TI Web site. To get on-time credit in the Distinguished Club Program, the information must be entered online by December 31, 2006, or, if mailed, postmarked December 31, 2006, and received at WHQ by January 7, 2007. Newly-elected officers: be sure to attend club-officer training offered by your district team. It will help you have a successful term of office. Check your district's Web site for information. To access your district's Web site, visit www.toastmasters.org > Information for Members > District Web Sites. Last June a set of club-officer manuals (one for each office) was mailed to each club. If you are just taking office, be sure to get these manuals from the outgoing club officers. Additional copies can be purchased through the TI online store. Want to honor your outgoing and incoming officers? Visit the TI online store on the TI Web site. There is a wide range of items such as current and past officer pins, certificates, plaques and gifts that can be used for tokens of appreciation. Be sure your club-officer information is up-to-date so your club won't miss any mailings or information from WHQ.
