It is a very unique situation where a tremendously important baseball game has been stopped, to resume at some later date. It provides a rare opportunity to reflect on the game to this point, and look at all the possibilities as to how it might end. This made me think about how seldom we stop what we are doing to reflect, and take the time to carefully consider our next step. We are too often wrapped up in our “game” and cannot find the time to step away and think about where we are, how we got there, or where we want to be. CREATIVE CLASS: The students in Mrs. Benkert’s second grade class reached twenty-five points for cooperative classroom behavior thus earning the privilege of selecting their classroom reward – which was to have a “Crazy Hair Day!” Top-knots, asymmetric hair, and colors of green, pink, blue, and red were everywhere! FLY AWAY: The first grade students learned about the insect characteristics and their life cycles as

they watched caterpillars become beautiful butterflies. What fun it was to let them fly away in our garden!

INSECT INTEREST:The first grade students spent the months of September and

October learning all about insects. To culminate the first

grade insect characteristic unit, Margaret Breasbois from the Saginaw County Mosquito

Abatement Commission visited the Learning Center

and gave a presentation. The presentation included a power

point show, learning about mosquitoes, looking at live

praying mantis, beetles, and mosquitoes. Looking through

a the compound eye was awesome!

MEET MISS POSCAL!Miss Poscal is the new second grade teacher at the Freeland Learning Center.

She is an enthusiastic and friendly teacher who loves to work with her students. She has created a “homey”classroom environment that enhances learning. Miss Poscal collaborates with her colleagues for planning lessons

and uses parent volunteers to assist her instructional program. Welcome to the Freeland Learning Center, Miss Poscal!

Emiley Hardy, Courtney Payk, Emily Wegner, and Erica Lamb are busy working on their “compare and contrast essay” in Mr. Nixon’s sophomore English class.

Ronald Makl prepares to use the vertical CNC mill to make a prototype golf club head. R&M Machine tool in Freeland generously donated the mill.

Haylie Kitsch and Ashlie Melzo display their Mole Day project, which was to determine that a ‘mole’ of cupcakes would stretch from Florida to Egypt.

Mrs. Marcie Rousseau assists Sarah Walker and Kelcie Geese with their “compare and contrast essays” in sophomore English.

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE... Fireman Don visited students to promote fire safety.

The high school teacher cadets designed their own picture books and read them aloud to FMS students. Middle school students evaluated Kelsey Hathaway and the other cadets based on their attire, voice inflection, use of visual aids, interaction with students, and the moral content of each story!

Study Island Trip to Splash Village

A contest was created to promote the use of the Study Island website over the summer months. The Study Island website provides challenging questions for the students to answer in order to play a variety of games. Students going into grades 4 - 6 were eligible for the contest. 134 Freeland Elementary School students participated in the contest. The students worked all summer to achieve the goal of 10 hours of use on Study Island. The following Freeland Elementary students achieved the goal, Matthew Bluer, Derek Booms, Anthony Cook, Ben Gibson, Jacob Hoffman, Adam Landeryou, Taylor Richards, Jack and Garrett Richardson, and Aiden Vanloo. These students, each chose a guest to accompany them on a field trip to Splash Village in Frankenmuth. The contest was sponsored by Freeland Elementary Student Council.

SUPER SCIENTISTS: Students from Mrs. Cripe’s third grade class are busily classifying animals.

YOUNG LEADERS: The 2008-2009 Student Council was recently elected at Freeland Elementary School. The fifth and sixth grade classes vote on a representative for each classroom. The Student Council at the Elementary School helps throughout the year with various activities such as popcorn sales, the Senior Citizen lunches, a food drive, morning announcements, and Kids Helping Kids during Walleye Festival.

Elementary Student Council (Front L-R): Alex Crane, Alaina Gilginas, Taylor Herring, Kyle Suitor, Dylan Shaw, Melanie Padgett (Back L-R): Josh Beltz, Kayla McQuinn, Brooke Taylor, Kayle Brilinski, Becky Bell (not pictured, Blake Rose).

“FUN”D RAISING: Lindsay Guster helps Mrs. Barthel with her “Cruisin’ Cooler” to celebrate the magazine sales at the elementary school.

ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLWe are looking for adults who can give at least an hour a week to work with individual

students. No special skills are needed, just a desire to help. You would be working with students who need extra one-on-one assistance with language arts or math. We will pair you with the grade level and subject area that you are comfortable with. If you can help

or would like further information, contact Kate Freeman at 695-5371.

READING TO 100: Mrs. Bain’s 3rd hour class is working hard to meet the goal of reading 100 novels by May 15th. So far, the kids are ahead of schedule. Max Lodge, Madison Behm, and Macey Miller are doing their part to achieve this goal.

COLLEGE BOUND: The seventh grade teachers are raising post-secondary education awareness by promoting many colleges in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by displaying the donated shirts, banners, and brochures in each classroom. FMS students are reminded daily about the importance of a college education.

READY FOR LONDON 2012: The seventh grade team of teachers created a fun and engaging assembly for our students recently. The assembly was a capstone to a thematic unit that extended into each content area. The theme was the “Olympics.” English classes studied “myths and legends,” and students in social studies had fun learning about ancient Greece and Hercules. Science and math students mastered the metric system by converting measurements and graphically organizing them in a variety of ways. Each homeroom “became” a different country for the unit, and proudly displayed their flag. Students researched facts and displayed informational posters in the circle area of our school. Top students in each homeroom were even given the honor to be the flag-bearers of the assembly ceremony. Eric Chesney, Katie Reams, Brandon Younglao, Jeremy Flood, and Adam Porath had fun competing in the “paper javelin” throw.

Elementary Principal ThoughtsBy Tim Parson

As mentioned in my October article, we implemented an intervention that was successful at the middle school last year called IPOD ( I need to work on Preparedness, Organization and Dependability) with fifth and sixth grade. In short, we provide students with missing or incomplete work the opportunity to finish their assignments with a teacher at lunch and/or after school. In the first month of school, this was so successful that we have expanded the program to fourth grade. We have seen equally successful results with these students.

Another year of MEAP testing is complete. I want to thank so many parents for their cooperation in getting your children to school on testing days well rested. I know some of you rearranged appointments to have students take tests on the scheduled days. The new testing schedule made make-ups extremely challenging.

BOOK CLUB: Fourth graders from Mrs. Taylor’s class are immersed in their book club! They enjoy reading and discussing the books.

High School Office Phone Numbers The High School office has been issued additional phone numbers in order to serve the community more efficiently. They are:Main Office – 695-2586Counseling Office – 695-5526Attendance/Athletics – 695-5525Athletic Director – 695-5986Events Line – 692-4030

CAUGHT FOR “GOOD MANNERS!” When they least expect it – the students from the Learning Center might receive a “good manners” slip to enter into one of the drawings for prizes that Mrs. Miller, gym teacher, and Mr. Guenther, music teacher, host each month. The adults watch and listen for the students to use skills such as saying, “please” and “thank you,” listening, following directions, and saying “I’m sorry.”

Take a MomentBy Matt Cairy, SuperintendentAs I am writing this, the 5th game of the World Series has been suspended by rain in the bottom the 6th inning. This is a huge challenge for your school district, as we strive for improvement. It is also a challenge I would put in front of each parent and Freeland resident, as members of our community. What can the Freeland Community School District do to better educate the children of Freeland? How can the Freeland Community School District better serve this community? Is their something you can do to help provide for our children? The more we think about what we want for our future, and communicate these ideas, the better job we will do in planning to make it happen. Please take the time to reflect on your schools, and let us know how we can better serve the needs of this community and our students.

The Super Week of Homecoming

The week of September 29 through October 3 was Homecoming Week. The theme for the week was Super Heroes. The festivities included Powder Puff on Tuesday night with a tightly contested game of flag football between the Jr. and Sr. girls.

The entire court was introduced at the royalty assembly with the King and Queen announced at the football game. New this year was the addition of gentlemen to the court.

The Homecoming Parade was headlined by the FHS Marching Falcons. The football game had perfect weather for an outstanding performance by the Falcons who were victorious in a hard-fought game.
