A GLANCING BLOW

She was thirteen the last time I saw her. That was until a few years ago when our paths crossed again. She was all grown up. I hardly know a thing about her and to my knowledge; we have never even exchanged words - only glances. Truth be known, as I sit here, I cannot even remember her name. So why would she find herself on the Pastor’s Page of a November newsletter?

A recent funeral at Faith Lutheran triggered a memory of another funeral. It was November of 1987 when I first “met” this thirteen year old. We stood at the graveside of her grandmother. That time came that always comes. It was the time for going on. At some point you simply have to turn and move away from the casket of a loved one. You may not want to leave, but there is nothing else to do. I was exchanging hugs and handshakes with family that I knew well, as well as family from out of town I did not know. Moving down to the end of the family line, she gave me a glancing blow. I recognized her as Julian’s granddaughter. Julian had proudly displayed pictures of her and was always more than willing to talk about her. She peered deeply into my eyes with a longing look I will never forget. We just stood there for a moment. I was paralyzed by all I saw in her eyes. There was such a mixture of grief, sadness and hope. It left me undone. Without a word she asked the “why did she have to die?” question. Her look pleaded “can’t something be done?” With this simple look there was this impossible hope that said “I just want her back,” while at the same time there was a faithful hope that said “it better be true that I will see her again.” I had no words to say at the moment. I had used them all up during the service. But she wasn’t looking for any words and none were

needed. A simple embrace and our tear-filled glances were enough. And for reasons I can’t explain, years later when I saw her from a distance surrounded by Julian’s family, we exchanged another glance and she flashed a simple smile that I believe we both understood. Life had moved forward and all was well again.

I suppose there is another reason this memory comes to mind. November 7 is All Saints Sunday. This is one of those tender and powerful Sundays in the church year. With love and sadness, hope and grief, we remember the saints who have gone before us. But more than gathering together only to remember loved ones, we gather around to hear again the promises of our Lord. Faith news over death looks like.

“But then there breaks a yet more glorious day: The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of glory passes on his way.

Can’t you just see it? The saints of God rising in reverent attention as Christ, the King of glory, majestically rides through the white-robed throng on his white horse. And as he passes by each one, he looks deeply into their eyes with a confident look that assures each of them that it is true….it is all true.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

(Continued from page 1) What does Thanksgiving mean

to you? I hear one boy say, "It means a big dinner." I think we all agree with him. Who does not welcome and enjoy a good dinner! I hear Mary say, "Thanksgiving means a day off from school." I guess you are right too. School is not such a charming place that girls and boys are unwilling to have an occasional holiday.

Now I am going to ask some of the older people what the day means to them. There is a young woman. She is a s t e n o g r a p h e r . S h e s a y s , "Thanksgiving means a day away from the office. I am at the office every day except Sunday, and I do appreciate, now and then, a day that is really my own." Yonder is a traveling salesman. What does Thanksgiving mean to you? He says, "It means a day at home. Last year I spent one hundred and sixty-nine nights away from home. I have three children. I should like to see them every day. There are times when many days pass and I do not see them. Thanksgiving week I plan to be at home."

There are others I could ask. Each has his answer. But Thanksgiving has a special meaning for us. It is the Harvest time. I have here an apple. Isn't this a beautiful apple? What color! Who mixed the paints, who handled the brush to give such color to this apple? God. He, in his infinite love and wisdom, has provided, through the unfailing laws of nature, for the growth, sweetness, coloring and beautifying of all the products of the fields. This apple is but one of many kinds of fruits.

Praise, then, is the great meaning of Thanksgiving. God, our heavenly Father, sends us every good gift. From his bountiful hand come our daily and nightly mercies. We should praise him every day. But the day for the united chorus of praise is Thanksgiving.

Sunday Morning Adult Education

9:15 - 10:15 a.m. in the Faith Center "Digging Deeper into Our Connection with God"

As part of our overall fall theme of dis/CONNECTED, the Adult Forum will center around a video series entitled, "The Ten Commandments: What They Mean, Why They Matter, Why You Should Care." The host of the series is Adrian Snell, a composer, singer, and communicator, who says, "There is Nothing Like It! What even comes close? Here is an historic document over 3,000 years old. It is a code for living more influential than any other. It confronts us today as an object of unceasing and intense public debate. The Ten Commandments were given to the people of Israel, yet they have been embraced by diverse cultures over long centuries. The neglect of the Ten Commandments is seen by many as contributing to a moral breakdown today. Others fight to keep them out of public places. Can you think of any other ancient text that so inspires such contemporary attention? In this series you will find out why the Ten Commandments are so potent, how they cut through the maze of psychobabble, how they get to the center of issues of the heart and how they affect the way we live."

On Sunday, November 28, join us for a Missions & Ministry Fair! Come and see the many places and ways our church is bearing witness to Jesus Christ in word and deed. Our Lord is working through this community to extend His Kingdom in marvelous ways.

Join us on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. in the Faith Center to be part of this important discussion. Everyone is welcome

and encouraged to attend!

Mark your calendars now for the Faith Lutheran Church Christmas Concert and “Lutran” dinner on Sunday, December 5

at 4:00 p.m.

You won’t want to miss this!! Watch for the details in the December newsletter and announcements. Just make sure to put it on your calendar!

Everyone is welcome to the Crow River WordAlone Chapter Meeting on Saturday, November 6, beginning with registration and coffee at 9:30 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church in the Faith Center. The meeting closes at 12:00 noon.

Pastor Scott Grorud will inform us about the North American Lutheran Church (NALC), founded by Lutheran CORE at its convention last August. NALC is the newest denomination congregations are joining as they leave the ELCA, following the decisions of the August, 2009, ELCA churchwide assembly.

Contact your friends who have been asking about new Lutheran landscape directions and invite them to join us.

Faith Lutheran church women

(FLCW) Thanks to everyone who organized, attended and worked at the Augustana Women of the Word Conference on October 2. Over 100 women attended. We are off to an encouraging start! Our meatball supper was a success with over 500 attending. Thank you to those who organized, donated, worked and/or attended. The profit was $3,786.90. $1,000 was donated to the Faith Lutheran Church general fund. 50% of the remainder will go toward the FLC mortgage. Thanks so much to all who organized, donated and helped with the KidPower on Main October 20 - 22. Twenty-three children attended and they had a great time. It was such a blessing for the parents and children during the MEA break. Talk to Jill Bierbaum, Dorothy Desens or Shelly Grorud if you can help in November or December. See page 7 of the newsletter for more information about KidPower on Main. The FLCW offices of Vice-President, Secretary and Kitchen Coordinator are open for a two-year term. Please prayerfully consider serving in this way. Our next general FLCW meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 7 at 5:00 p.m. We will be having an “International Christmas.” This will include a musical drama. Please bring a friend and your favorite “international” food. Rumor has it that there may be some rommegrot.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Once again we invite members of Faith Lutheran to participate in the annual mission to children all over the world at Christmas time. We hope we can continue to grow in faithfulness and increased numbers of boxes, since the need is great.

“Operation Christmas Child” distributes boxes of toys, hygiene needs and clothing articles small enough to fit into a shoebox, all in the Name of Jesus Christ. Children who receive these boxes display wide smiles, as missionaries tell them that Jesus, the Savior of the world, is behind each and every gift. Jesus inspires people to such generosity. It’s a great program to participate in! We encourage you to fill one, two or more shoe boxes with items listed in a special folder you can pick up in our narthex or church office.

Why not make this a family project, as some already have, inspiring a spirit of mission and giving all ages can share together. Organizations in our congregation, Sunday School classes, Bible Study groups…even neighborhood groups can work together to fill as many boxes as possible. We have a DVD video available for groups or families to borrow to inspire and inform you.

*** Be sure to consult the folder before buying gifts, since some items are unsuitable and will not be accepted. Also, be sure to follow the packing instructions implicitly, so the boxes will be delivered. Here’s what you can do: ∗ Get a folder with all details from the

narthex or church office. ∗ Bring extra shoe boxes to the church

office, for those who don’t have them. ∗ Use your own shoe box, get one from a

neighbor or friend, or from the church office, or use a plastic storage container of shoebox size.

∗ Place a check (preferably NOT cash) for $ 7.00 inside the box for shipping costs. **Make the check payable to “Samaritan’s Purse.”

∗ If you wish to participate, but not fill a box, give a cash gift to help with shipping.

Please bring your boxes to the church office/narthex, and we will see they are shipped to the warehouse. If you have questions, call Kacie Lange (234-8413) or Pastor Paulus (235-8415). The DEADLINE to bring boxes is Sunday, November 7.

Pilgrim

Tim Sanken is not a newcomer to programming at Faith Lutheran. He has gone on mission trips and reported on them at Sunday morning adult forums, etc. Each report has given us a vision of some vital and inspiring work done in the name of Jesus.

Tim will be with us again at our Seniors Potluck group meeting on Thursday, November 11. (This meeting is earlier than usual, due to Thanksgiving later in the month.) The meeting begins with potluck dinner at noon, followed by devotions and Tim’s presentation on his mission trip to Iraq.

You may know some senior member whom you would like to be a part of this uplifting, monthly fellowship. Please take some time to give them a call and tell them about our meetings. Maybe you could come together with them, and introduce them to our proceedings and people. Thank you!

Oh yes….the December meeting is also earlier as well, because of the Christmas holiday activities. So mark your calendar for Thursday, December 9. For that meeting our music director, Sue Graff, has some special Advent/Christmas musical things planned for us, to prepare our hearts for the coming of our Savior, Jesus.

Thrivent Members Can Now Designate “Choice Dollars” to Faith Lutheran Church

Faith Lutheran members who have insurance or other contracts with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans can now call upon Thrivent to make a designated donation to FLC. The exact amount given by Thrivent will depend on the value of the contracts.

This can be done through registering online and directing how you want this to be done, a one time designation or ongoing plan of directing “choice dollars” to your congregation.

The process is as follows: Register on line by going to the home page (www.thrivent.com) and clicking on “register.” You will be directed on a simple procedure for registering. If you are already registered, you can then log in and click on Thrivent Community, then Thrivent Choice, and then Choice Dollars. There you will be able to designate gifts to Faith Lutheran Church. If you wish this can be a one time gift or continuous. It does not come from your funds but from Thrivent.

This can be a significant help to the ministry of FLC. One of our pastors in registering was able to designate $94.00 to FLC for this year and will just keep this coming each year.

Common Cup Diaper Drive Common Cup is providing a much needed outreach program in Hutchinson. Each month one bag of diapers is given (at no charge) to families with children using diapers. There is no income requirement or age verification required. One bag is allowed per child. Throughout the month of November, Faith Lutheran Church will be sponsoring the diaper distribution. Please add disposable diapers to your shopping list and bring them to the church. We will have a playpen set up in the back narthex and at FLC North to put the diapers in. If you prefer someone else do the shopping, donations to “Diaper Drive” are welcome. Also, those of you who are coupon clippers, keep your eyes open for coupons, clip’em, and drop them off in the church office. Diaper distribution is the last Tuesday of each month from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Bev Bonte at 234-8344 or contact Jackie in the church office. Thank you!

The Battle to Feed the Hungry Lutheran World Relief Connects Water,

Hunger, Health, and Education

Did you know that: ∗ 5 million children die annually from water

related diseases;

∗ The average distance that women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is over three miles.

Lutheran World Relief works with partners in the most desperate situations to provide fresh, clean drinking water, as well as helping those constantly facing hunger, to have irrigation systems that enable them to provide food for their families and to sell crops so that their children can go to school. Your offerings will give the priceless gift of water so that hungry folk will be fed, stay healthy, and receive an all important education.

Feed the Children: Your gift will cover essential transportation costs to send basic, nutritious food stuffs to families in great need.

Common Cup Ministries: This offering will go to support the food distribution ministry of Common Cup. Your gift will help sponsor one of the frequent food distributions through a partnership with Second Harvest Heartland.

McLeod County Food Shelf: The director reports that more elderly are coming in due to medications using up food money. With unemployment checks ending and food stamps cut, the usage is increasing each month, and tears are flowing as 14 % of McLeod County residents face food shortages regularly.

What would a generous gift be for you and your family? Pray about what you might do? Imagine an amount and ask yourself, if you might be able to double it, or go beyond that to stretch you in your expression of generosity.

That All God's Children May Be Fed: November Is Your Opportunity to Help

Faith Lutheran Church has set a goal of $5,000 to be given by members to address domestic and world hunger needs. Your offering will be apportioned as follows: 70% to Lutheran World Relief, 10% to Common Cup Ministries, 10% to the

McLeod County Food Shelf, and 10% to Feed the Children out of Stewart,

Minnesota. Your offering can be given any time throughout November. Please use your “Mission Sunday” and/or your

“Thanksgiving” offering envelope.

Kylee Kohls (granddaughter of Leroy & Darlene Karg) is collecting the pink

Yoplait Yogurt lids again this year. 10 cents for each lid collected goes to the

Susan G. Komen foundation to help find a cure for breast cancer. A collection

container is located in the church office.

DID YOU KNOW?

As a way to keep connected, we are again making calls to every family at church. Faith Family names will be printed in the bulletin (in random order) and families will be prayed for in church and throughout the week. The prayer below was written by the Spiritual Direction Team. We encourage you to say this prayer as you remember those on the list each week. The calls will correspond with these lists. We look forward to connecting with you!

God our dear Father, You gave your all in Jesus, your Son, to save us for all eternity. You long to give us a spirit of gratitude that will lead to "first fruits" giving for Your Kingdom, trusting that when we "seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, all these things will be Yours as well." Grant that Your Holy Spirit will give each of us this spirit of trust that You will supply all our needs; and that in the

remaining months of this year we will see our work for your kingdom flourish through prayer and increased giving. Please let the families that we lift up in prayer this week feel Your blessings and power in their lives.

Through Jesus Christ. Amen

HOW TO REMEMBER FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH IN YOUR WILL Remembering Faith Lutheran Church in your will is a fitting testimony of belief in our mission. Your "WILL" is the key to making your wishes known and how you want your estate to be distributed.

BE SURE YOU HAVE A WILL THAT IS UP-TO-DATE Perhaps you have told yourself many times that you want to remember Faith Lutheran Church in your Will, but reminding yourself is not enough. Probate laws aren't based on good intentions, a verbal promise, or even a letter. A valid Will is essential. If you do not have a Will, State law determines how your property will be divided. It is doubtful you would agree to this arbitrary method of choosing your heirs and determining their shares. Without a Will, the State will not consider any charitable beneficiaries. An old Will can be almost as bad as no Will. Your wishes today for the division of your estate may be quite different from those you had when you made your Will. Life events, tax law changes, a move to another State, or changes in the nature and value of your assets can also affect your Will.

SELECT AN OPTION When you name Faith Lutheran Church Legacy of Faith Building Fund, and/or the Endowment Fund as a beneficiary, you have many choices. One possibly is a bequest of a fixed dollar amount. Another is to include Faith Lutheran Church Legacy of Faith Building Fund and/or the Endowment Fund for a percentage of the estate, which allows you to keep the division of the estate residue in desired proportions, regardless of its size. One of the best witnesses to faithful stewardship I have ever heard came from a member of a congregation in Nebraska. He truly believed that every possession he held in this life did not ultimately belong to him, but to God. He knew he would not carry his wealth along with him when he passed from this earth. And he felt passionately about needing to give thanks to God for whatever meager resources he now possessed. As he reflected on this he came up with the plan, for himself and his wife, that when he made out his Will he would leave everything to his children. But, he also made it clear that while everyone knew he had 5 children who would inherit his estate, he would make out his Will as though he had 6. The 6th child would be his church, his congregation. His estate would be divided into 6 parts. Thus, his congregation, along with his flesh and blood children would receive whatever funds dad and mom would not use in their old age. What did the children think about this? Actually, they were delighted, as if they were making a donation through this plan. They learned from their parents' faith, and were making their own arrangements to do the same in their Wills. Maybe we can also take the same action, and know that our resources can far outlive us, as God uses them to further His Kingdom, even when we are gone from this earth.

THE RIGHT TO CHANGE YOUR WILL There are ways to arrange charitable gifts you have been wanting to make while reserving the right to change your mind. "Revocable" gifts involve planning today for a gift to be received in the future. Because you retain control of the asset, you may revoke, or cancel the gift at any time your needs or those of loved ones change. Sources of revocable gifts include bequests, revocable living trusts, individual retirement accounts and other retirement funds, life insurance policies, certificates of deposit (CD's), a home, farm, or other real estate, business property, publicly traded securities, and prized personal possessions. Your future well-being (and that of loved ones) is not jeopardized through revocable gifts. Amending your Will or Revocable living trust, or designating a new beneficiary in the remaining balance in life insurance policies or retirement accounts can be a simple process. Revocable giving provides a flexible way for you to share with others.

A Letter from the President of ILT

Greetings in the Name of the Risen Lord!

But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’" (Romans 10:14-15)

While in every age the Holy Spirit calls forth preachers of the Gospel and sends them forth with the Word of hope, forgiveness and new life that is Jesus the Christ, each age must also struggle with how most effectively to train and educate those who have been called.

As an independent, pan-Lutheran theological educational endeavor, the Institute of Lutheran Theology (ILT) partners with congregations to educate preachers and teachers to proclaim the true gospel of Jesus Christ to the contemporary world. With its curriculum rooted in Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, ILT believes that truth is unitary, and that theology makes truth-claims that can be brought into conversation with other voices within the contemporary intellectual horizon, especially the voice of the natural sciences.

By embracing contemporary technology, ILT offers students an opportunity to study at home through streaming video lecture and discussions, and to integrate their theological education in “hands on” ways within the congregational context. ILT is deeply flexible, offering a wide variety of programs tailored to student needs, e.g., Ministry Certification, Pastoral Certification, and the Masters of Divinity degree. Additionally, the Institute provides lay programming for congregations and interested individuals, programming that is highly adapted for congregational adult education.

Will you join us? The sending out of faithful proclaimers of the good news has never been more crucial than it is today. Are you being called to preach and teach, or perhaps to support financially those who are being so called?

In Christ,

Dennis Bielfeldt, Ph.D. President, Institute of Lutheran Theology
