Some people think the strength of the SIMMENTAL breed lies in high weaning calves......

Some people think the strength of the SIMMENTAL breed lies in balanced and consistent herdsires....

We think the strength of the SIMMENTAL breed may very well lie in the powerful SIMMENTAL female.

SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7Down The Trail................hey folks, well here we are again, boy does time fly......hope you’ve had a good fall and yer all caught up and ready for winter.....ya right, seems we’re never caught up, just have to quit when the snow flies..............well the good news is the cattle prices are at a record high or so it seems, hope it stays that way for a decade......nice to see cattle producers may finally have a little jingle in their jeans and a spring in their step...been a long time comin...........in the news, it seems the Pembina Triangle group has a couple of new little members....congratulations to Gilles and JeannineVuignier, Sky Ridge Simmen-tals, St. Claude, MB on the birth of their baby girl, Madilyn, on June 30, 8 lbs, 8 oz...and congratulations also to Scott and Janine Duguid, Lochwood Simmen-tals, Arnes, MB on the birth of their baby girl, Orla, in May..................and it seems two of our well-known and long-time Simmental breeders celebrated milestone birth-days this year, so Happy Birthday to Bonnie & Miles Glasman, M & J Farms, Russell, MB......they do everything together............I would like to urge or even implore everyone to try using our ftp site when sending photos and PDF files to us....it sounds scary but it’s actually very easy and can be a real time-saver, something we all seem to need these days....so you simply open your web browser, eg. Internet Explorer, type in the web address for the ftp site, found on page 29 of this issue....often it will say “open this page in Internet Exlorer” and it tells you how to do that.......then double-click on the “incoming” folder, then drag and drop your folder to that one.....a window should pop up telling you it’s going and how long it will take....boom, done....it’s important that you notify us with the file name that you have placed on the ftp site so we know it’s there...this will eliminate you having to send big photo files one at a time by email....and if you want to get really techno-savvy you can do it with ftp software such as Filezilla which is free to download....and if you need help with all this, just give us a call...one last thing, please send your copy early next issue cause we are Agribition-bound...see u there.............. Lois

MORE BROSMORE BROS

Brazilians Visit Southern Manitoba

Simmental enthusiasts Max and Alice Be-dim of Porto Alegre, Brazil toured Boynecrest Stock Farm, Stephenfield, MB in September. The couple were in Winnipeg visiting rela-tives Bruno and Maria Silvestre-Bruno is a business professor at the University of Winnipeg- and were looking to visit a Simmental breeder during their stay. Kelly and Elaine Ferris of Boynecrest Farm hosted them on September 19, enjoying a delightful visit. The Bedims raise Simmental cattle in Brazil, crossing them with Zebu, or Brahma because of the hot climate. They use the fullblood Simmental in-fluence in their herd, accessing genetics from their breed association, comprised of “Simental and Simbrasil”. The cows are milked and at the same time raise their calves on their own. As is often the case here, the Bedims both hold off-farm jobs. Max is an orthodontist and Alice is a psychiatrist. The two couples thoroughly enjoyed their visit, and the Bedims plan to return to Canada in the future to take in the Manitoba Livestock Expo and Agribition.

In this fourth installment of top ten marketing tools, Lois and I recommend why and how to showcase and market your products/services to help you promote your cattle business to your target market. Installment one described categorizing potential customers, known as “niche marketing” – matching your prod-ucts or services with the most likely buyers. The next step is ensuring these most likely buyers either are, or become aware that your cattle operation can meet their needs and wants. Two marketing strategies that will help you are:Differentiation is figuring out how your cattle business is unique so that when prospects are ready to buy, they immedi-ately think of your operation, not a competitor’s. A savvy marketer jumps out ahead of the herd – to create “top of the mind marketing”. In its most simple form differentiation is like word association – for example, what comes to mind when someone mentions “cola”, to you? Your next thought will probably be “Coke”. Do you have a marketing edge over your competitors, such as polled or red/black/traditional coat colour genetics? Perhaps you own the only herd sire with his particular bloodlines in Canada? Make the most of these differences to stand out.Positioning is identifying how your business is at the very top of your “niche” in the market. People like to buy from the best - it gives them bragging rights to impress their friends with. For example – “Well, I bought my new herd sire from Canada’s best (or newest, or largest, or oldest, or most successful) Simmental breeder.” Create a tagline (a business slo-gan) which identifies your business as the top “whatever”. One producer we know has tag lined his operation with “Bulls are our business – our females keep us in business!”. Don’t be shy about letting your clients know your claim to fame. If you and another competitor can both equally make the same claim, then make the claim first - before your competitor does. It’s pretty hard to knock you off your pedestal, if you get there first.Unfortunately with marketing, there is no one magic trick to build your business. It’s built through the cumulative efforts of your whole stable of marketing strategies. Some of these methods will be familiar to you, such as the traditional ones: · acquire business cards, letterhead, brochures, and printed materials· advertise in cattle industry magazines and directories, and agricultural newspapers· put up win banners or ribbons, stall decorations and signs at when competing at cattle shows · create sale posters or catalogues which showcase your consigned animals · issue media (press) releases to the public and your clients (see Installment three)· create and maintain your own cattle operation website Other no cost or low cost electronic strategies to showcase your product/services include:· create outgoing email marketing messages – visit: www.constantcontact.com/email-marketing/index.jsp· buy and/or sell Google ad space on your website - visit: www.google.com/adsense · create a Facebook page for your cattle business - visit : www.netrostar.com/Article-216-A%20road%20map%20 for%20setting%20up%20Facebook%20page%20for%20business· use other Social media networks: Twitter – visit : www.chrisbrogan.com/50-ideas-on-using-twitter-for-business/ LinkedIn – visit: www.linkedin.com/static?key=business_info· create videos of your sale animals and post them on YouTube (you can then post links to your videos on your website) – visit: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O7iUiftbKU , and/or you can convert your videos to CD/DVD format and snail mail to your prospective customer list. While each of these marketing tools can stand alone, they work so much harder for you when they support and comple-ment each other. Be sure that any creative designs you use are consistent with your business brand. The last thing you want to do is to have several different looks or styles to your advertising materials; because you can’t capitalize on the benefits of repeating the visual image of your brand to your target market. One other essential checkpoint: make sure every marketing strategy you use includes all critical contact information, your mailing address/telephone/fax number, email, social network links, and website addresses.
