Drive Carefully inWintry Weather
Winter driving can be dangerous.Snow and ice make roads slippery, and staying home is not always anoption. Follow these tips for saferdriving:
Be prepared. Always keep yourgas tank at least half full. Have anemergency kit in case you get stuck.Include a map, emergency phonenumbers, water, nonperishable snackfood, blankets, a flashlight, a brightlycolored cloth to tie to your antenna, insurance information and a tool kit. Also, know how to deal with commonemergencies such as a flat tire or adead battery. If you becomesnowbound, stay with your vehicle—itprovides shelter and makes it easierfor rescuers to find you.
Slow down. Accelerate anddecelerate slowly. When roads areslick, the most important advice is todrive slowly and allow extra roombetween you and the cars around you. This can give you time to react in acrisis. Remember, speed limits areintended for ideal, dry conditions.
Look ahead. Paying close attentionto the road and any potentialobstacles ahead allows you plenty oftime to slow to a stop if necessary.
Don’t panic if you skid. OSHA.govrecommends turning your wheels inthe direction of the skid, no matterwhat your instinct tells you.

Create a Story:Fill-in-the-Blank
Ask friends to provide nouns (n.),verbs (v.), and adjectives (adj.) to fill inthe blanks below. (PT=past tense.)Then read the story out loud for anoutlandishly funny tale.
My friend and I were getting readyfor the (adj.)____ game in ourhometown. I packed a cooler full of(n.)____, (n.)____ and (n.)____ andfilled it with ice. I thought it might bechilly at the game, so I stuffed(n.)____ in my pockets and wore anextra pair of (n.)____ under myclothes. My friend told me he wore twoextra pairs, which made me (v.)____.We walked into the stadium and saw(adj.)____ fans crowding around therailing. It looked like the (adj.)____team just (v. PT)____ a (n.) _____.Now that was a (adj.)____ surprise!
Stuffing or Dressing? You say “stuffing.” I say “dressing.”
Thanksgiving turkey’s savory side dishgoes by two names. What you call itprobably has more to do with whereyou grew up than whether the mixtureis served inside or outside the bird.Generally residents of the northernU.S. say stuffing, while Southernerstend to call it dressing. One theory isthat the word “dressing” is morepalatable to genteel Southernsensibilities than the graphic-sounding“stuffing.”
Teatime Tames TensionWhen temperatures drop, folks find
themselves drinking more hotbeverages throughout the day.Instead of coffee, drink black tea toreduce stress. Research shows thattea has tension-taming properties, sowarm up and unwind with a steamingcup of tea today.
Pace Yourself on ThanksgivingThanksgiving dinner might seem
like an opportunity to gorge ondelicious food, but binge eating isunhealthy. Don’t fast the morning ofThanksgiving. Have your usualbreakfast, and then you can enjoyThanksgiving dinner withoutovereating.

Turkey TV DinnersEveryone wants a holiday
gathering that goes off without a hitch, but even the best-laid plans can goawry. Here are some famous and, luckily, fictional Thanksgiving fiascoesaudiences shared with their favoritetelevision sitcoms over the years:
Trifle troubles. In a1999 episode of“Friends,” the gang tries to stomachRachel’s (Jennifer Aniston) botchedEnglish trifle dessert. When hercookbook pages stick together, sheends up making a dish that’s halfEnglish trifle, half shepherd’s pie.
Turkey turf. In a 1996 episode of“Everybody Loves Raymond,” Debra(Patricia Heaton) plans to bucktradition and serve fish forThanksgiving dinner. Whenoverbearing mother-in-law Marie(Doris Roberts) hears the news, sheruffles feathers when she shows up todinner with her own turkey.
Food fight. The 1986 Thanksgivingepisode of “Cheers” features agigantic turkey dubbed “Birdzilla.” Theshow ends in an infamous food fightwhere Norm’s (George Wendt) wifemakes her first appearance, but Diane(Shelley Long) throws a pie that hitsher face, obscuring her to theaudience.
Grocery grief. A 1989 episode of“The Cosby Show” features afrustrated Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable (BillCosby) who makes several trips to thegrocery store because he keepsforgetting items wife Clair (PhyliciaRashad) needs. After breaking eggsand getting caught in a downpour, Cliffcan finally sit down to Thanksgivingdinner.
