Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
THE DELTA TIMES
GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Sorors, Welcome to the November 2014 issue of the Delta Times. As we move towards the season of Thanksgiving, I would be remiss if I did not take the opportunity to give thanks for the many blessings that have been bestowed. First, I’d like to thank you for allowing me to serve as the president of this chapter, which is entering its 67th year of sisterhood and service to Annapolis and the surrounding communities. The Annapolis Alumnae Chapter has been in existence longer than all but one other alumnae chapter in the state of Maryland. We have a long legacy in this com-munity, and I am honored and thankful for the faith that you have placed in me to lead this chapter. Sec-ond, I am thankful for the members of this chapter for your tireless efforts to ensure that we continue to grow and serve the community. But for your efforts, this chapter could not continue to provide programs that have a meaningful impact in the community. Last week, I issued an email highlighting some of these activities. On Friday, November 7th, the chapter partici-pated in the Annual Fall Fest at the Robinwood Recre-ation Center along with other Greek sororities and fraternities. (See page 10 ) This event provided a festive environment of games, food, face painting, and books for more than 75 children from the Robinwood community. It was featured in the November 8th issue of the Capital Gazette at the following link. http://www.capitalgazette.com/news/annapolis/ph-ac-cn-robinwood-festival-1108-20141108,0,2466158.story On Saturday, November 8th, the EMBODI Committee, along with the Eta Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, hosted a college tour in which more than 20 young men toured the U.S. Naval Academy campus. Programs of this nature may prove fruitful in showing the participants the possibilities of attending such an institution. (See EMBODI on page 3) Also, on Sunday, November 9th, chapter members, along with members of other Greek sororities and fraternities, worshipped at the Argonne Hills Chapel Center in Ft. Meade, MD, in which each group was recognized. (See page 10) Additionally, the Fall Dance committee is working hard to ensure the success of this chapter event that provides funding for youth programs. A message was sent to all chap-ter members asking for support; special thanks to Sorors Bronte Jones, JoAnn Henry Espeut, and Michele Henley Williams who made sizeable donations although unable to attend. (See page 12 for more information on the Fall Dance.) In this month’s issue of the Delta Times is a new feature page entitled “Delta Updates” which highlights many of the activities in which the chapter and its members are in-volved. (See page 10). Finally, as we come into the Thanksgiving season, we all have something to be thankful for, such as our sisterhood, our families, our health, our homes, our jobs: all the compo-nents that lead to a happy and fulfilling life. Let us all be mindful that if we are blessed, it is incumbent upon us to be a blessing for others. In Sisterly Spirit,

The Social Action committee collaborated with EMBODI on Voter Registration and Education, held on Saturday, October 4, 2014. Social Action distributed a voter information handout to parents with the dates and instructions for early voting and ab-sentee voting. Parents were encouraged to ‘get out the vote’ by going to the polls on November 4, early voting, or absentee voting. Social Action brought home to the young men and par-ents, the connection between the issues that need changing in our community situations and circumstances and the need to create, promote, support, and vote into existence new laws to bring about those changes.
At the October 18th chapter meeting, Social Action continued its voter registration and education program thrust and anchored participation in the
Sorority’s “National Voter Education Campaign & Countdown to the Polls” initiative. Signs with Maryland Voting Facts were made available to Sorors for posting photos of themselves holding the facts on Facebook, In-stagram, or Tweeting them. The Maryland Voting Facts were emailed to all Sorors for further social media ac-tions throughout the campaign. Voting information handouts were given to So-rors for next day distribution in their churches. Committee members spent sev-eral hours on both October 20th and 21st, distributing voter information handouts on the Anne Arundel Community College campus and posting infor-mation handouts on bulletin boards on the St John’s College campus. Commit-tee members spoke with many students and encouraged them to vote. Other so-cial media activities of the campaign included Facebooking, emailing, texting, and/or calling at least 10 family, friends, and colleagues to remind them to vote and to share voting facts; October 20-27 (during early voting period) and No-vember 1 (prior to Election Day). The committee also participated in signing on to blackandbrownpeoplevote.org, as well as the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. national website for the 22 day countdown to the polls. The Social Action Committee thanks all chapter Sorors who participated in making this meaning-ful contribution to the mission to help our communities Get organized, Get Reg-istered, Get Education and Get to the Polls, NOVEMBER 4, 2014”.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
I am here to tell you the vision never changes! Circumstances and situations may change, plans and ideas may be altered but the vision remains constant! We are reaping the benefits of a vision conceived over 101 years ago by 22 collegiate women who wanted and desired to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to their community. They used their collective strength and wisdom to found an organization that has endured and continue to evolve and change with the times but maintaining the sorority’s original vision.
Sorors we must see past all the distractions and obstacles life places in our path and focus on the vision, see the vision, remember the vision and write the vision God has placed in/on your heart. We must continue to move forward always remembering the vision in which we have willingly and lovingly joined ourselves too… Delta Sigma Theta is a life time commitment! As well as the personal vision God has placed in/on your heart!
“Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it”.-Habakkuk 2:2 (NKJ)
