Whirlwind Football Finishes Strong

The Yelm Middle School Football teams continued their successful seasons

in the month of October.

The Varsity completed a 5 and 1 season with wins over Woodbrook,

Lochburn, and Ridgeline. Scott Cordova and Kuma Nolte were leaders on

both sides of the ball. The offensive line of Josh Thompson, Marlin Raleigh,

DJ Jorbal, Auston Higuera, and Andrew Henderson were dominant through-

out the season.

The JV team went undefeated for the month, and they have put together a

4-0 record with wins over Mann, Keithley, Woodbrook, and Eatonville. Kyle

Robinson, Nevin Goodrum, Kodee Gifford, and Derrick Platt have led a

dominant offense. While Cody Frye and Chayton Miller have been strong for a

defense that has yet to give up any points this season.

Boys Soccer Finishes a Great Season

The Boys Soccer Season finished up on October 30th. Highlight of the season

included a come from behind victory against Nisqually Middle School on October

23, when the Varsity team scored 2 goals in the final minutes of the second half

to post a 3 to 1 victory.

This year YMS was back to having their own Varsity and JV teams after combining

teams with Ridgeline Middle School for the past 4 years. Both teams made re-

markable improvements during the season. On October 29th the teams hosted

and end of the season banquet and awards recognition. Most Valuable Player

Awards were given to Anthony Gonzales (Varsity) and Kaleb Best (JV).

Dia de Los Muertos YMS art students have been learning about the Mexi-can celebration Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). One of the traditional art forms of this celebration is

sugar skulls. Sugar skulls are made from molded sugar and frosting. Eighth grade students had the

opportunity to make their own sugar skulls.

Leadership Lock-In 2013!

Two hundred Whirlwind students

and 23 staff members attended the

YMS Late Night Leadership Lock-In

on Friday, October 25th. Students

learned leadership concepts, met

other potential leaders, and

learned how to make a difference

at their school.

Some of the skills students were

introduced to included: Public

Speaking, Decision Making, Ice-

breakers and Energizers, Parlia-

mentary Procedure, Listening Skills,

Empathy and more.

Navigation 101 & Student Led Conferencing YMS students have been working hard since the beginning of the year on setting goals in their classes to present to you at Student Led Conferences. Once a month with their homeroom teacher, students work on academic goal setting, career exploration, personal development, and post-secondary planning through the Navigation program.

Why Navigation 101? Focus students on their future Recognize student achievement Build student accountability Encourage student engagement Strengthen school community Involve parents and guardians

Navigation 101 (NAV101) operates on the premise that every student deserves support and attention, not just those who are high risk or high achieving. Every student is given the opportunity to shine, focusing on their goals, achievement and plans for improvement. A focal point of NAV101 program is each student’s presentation of his/her portfolio to parents/guardians at Student-Led Conferences each fall and spring.

Student Led Conferences are November 6, 7, and 8th. Contact your student’s homeroom teacher for an appointment.
