November 2015 Lunch Meeting
Date: November 19, 2015
Location: Texas Star Golf Course and Conference Center, Euless, Texas
Speaker: Phil Spitzer, P.E., North Texas Municipal Water District;
Co-author: Julian Sandino, P.E., CH2M HILL
Time: 11:00 – 11:45 Networking; 11:45-1:00 Lunch and Presentation
Presentation Title: “Rain -- We Asked For Too Much of a Good Thing”
Presentation Synopsis: The North Texas Municipal Water District operates the first
BIOACTIFLO® system constructed in the U.S. The process operates in a wet weather
mode and a dry weather mode. Because the region has experienced a prolonged drought,
the process had not really been tested in wet weather mode. With the record setting rains in
the spring of 2015, the system was finally put to the test. In dry weather mode, the bio-
contactor is used for additional aeration capacity, and the high rate clarifier is used for pol-
ishing phosphorus in secondary effluent. This presentation will review the process mechan-
ics and show some of the data for both modes of operation.
Speaker Bio: Phil is a graduate of Kansas State University with bachelor’s degrees in
biology and civil engineering. He worked in the consulting sector for 25 years and now the
public sector with the North Texas Municipal Water District as the Wastewater System engi-
neer. Phil’s primary experience has been as a designer and project manager. Currently, he
is very involved in operation of the system and evaluation of plant processes. He is a mem-
ber of the Water Environments Association of Texas and served as the past Water for Peo-
ple committee chair and currently is the secretary for the North Texas Section of WEAT.

Leadership Message - by Eva Gorgi
Dear WEATies,
Since my previous leadership message was exceptionally lengthy, I will
keep this one short.
Our 9th Opstoberfest Cook-off was a great success again. Every year we
get bigger and better despite obstacles such as occurred this year. The
cook-off teams grilled and BBQ’d in rain and heavy winds. Nothing can
deter the spirit of a WEATie! Nineteen teams prepared delicious meats, fourteen submitted yummy des-
serts, and twelve brewers offered their homemade beer. Lynn Hall presented a “fat” check from the Daryl
Hall golf tournament for $7,000. This contribution will support Daryl Hall scholarship.
A big thanks to the cook-off committee Matt Jalbert, Monique Florez, Heather Compton, Amy Robinson,
and Brigit Buff for a well-organized event.
What’s coming up? I just want to invite you to two November events:
November 14th- please join us for a second Saturday morning Trinity River Cleanup Challenge:
“Redeem the Stream” in Dallas. High water brought lots of trash and the environment needs your
help. I promise, you will feel gratified for this good deed.
November 19th- bi-monthly meeting- please remember- it is a lunch meeting. Phil Spitzer and Julian
Sandino will be presenting on Wilson Creek BioActiflo. I hope to see you all at the Texas Star.
As Thanksgiving is approaching, it always makes me reflect on what we are really thankful for. I am
thankful to be a part of a wonderful organization like WEAT; I am especially thankful for you, being my
friends and comrades.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Eva Gorgi
WEAT-NTS President

WEFTECOPSCHALLENGERECAPWEFTEC 2015 was an exciting year for Texas as we sent four teams to Chicago to represent WEAT and compete in the Operation’s Challenge Events! The TRA CReWSers beat out seven other teams from across the nation to bring home the Division 1 Overall Championship to North Texas!!! The Dal-las Aqua Techs, TRA Waste Warriors and Bat City Water Works Teams represented WEAT in the Division 2 Category and all placed in the top half of the over 37 teams that competed at the event. A big congratulations to all the teams and their supporters on another successful year at WEFTEC and for making the North Texas chapter very proud!
Also, congrats to the new collections event coordinator, Jeff Sober, who joins Mary Evans as a Na-tional Coordinator. Additionally, WEAT NTS had several members represented on the judging staff and supporting the teams, great job to all that were involved!

The 12th Annual Daryl Hall Memorial Golf Classic was held Friday, August 28th, at the Water Chase Golf Course. Not a spare golf cart could be found as we had record breaking attendance and the maximum number of teams registered for the event. We had a record-breaking amount of funds raised this year, which helps fund the Daryl Hall Scholarship Fund – a scholarship for the specific pur-pose of providing technical training and assisting with finances associated with continued education in the water/wastewater industry. Thank you to all our volunteers, golfers and sponsors for making the event such a big success. See y’all next year!

ANNUALTREASURERREPORTWe recently completed a financial reconciliation of the FY14/15 (fiscal year ending June 30,
2015) revenues, expenses, and account balances for the WEAT North Texas Section. This report
is intended to give our members an idea of how their dues, sponsorships, and other financial
contributions are used.
Revenue Summary
The chart below summarizes the
sources of our FY14/15 reve-
nues. This last fiscal year, we
received $114,925, down from
the previous year’s total of
$127,417. This decrease is be-
lieved to be partially attributable
to the timing of corporate spon-
sorships for the fiscal year;
many sponsorships are actually
received in the weeks after the
close of our fiscal year.
Expense Summary
As shown in the following chart, expenses were $99,832, considerably higher than last years’ $64,588. This reflects our continued efforts to increase scholarship awards. We were fortunate to be able to pay scholarships from our operating funds while contributing to our professionally-managed scholarship ac-count. Our scholarship awards, plus contributions to our managed account and to Operations Challenge teams, totaled over $36,000.

Breakdown of Revenues and Expenses
Our balance sheet and income statement are presented below. We ended the fiscal year with total
assets of $281,479, up from last year’s close of $266,112. This balance puts the North Texas Section
on a strong footing to fund additional programs in the coming year, to continue increasing scholar-
ships, and to continue moving toward our goal of having a sustainable scholarship program.

TREASURERREPORT,CONT.Dinner Meetings
During the last fiscal year, as in past years, we had a slight positive revenue from dinner meet-
ings when sponsorships subsidies are taken into account. For dinner meetings held at Texas
Star, actual costs per attendee exceed the amount we charge. Our positive net revenue is at-
tributable to company sponsorships, our Opstoberfest event, and food being cooked on-site
by members for meetings held at treatment facilities, substantially reducing the food costs for
those meetings. Substantial discounts are offered to operators and students at our dinner
meetings; these discounts are subsidized by other revenues.
February Seminar
The February Seminar has historically been our biggest fund raising event, and the 2015 event
was our most successful ever from a financial standpoint. Net revenues of $19,059 are at-
tributed to the seminar after accounting for dozens of corporate sponsorships and for partici-
pant fees. A number of students and educators attended the seminar at reduced rates subsi-
dized by corporate sponsorships and other fees.
Sporting Clays Event
The 2014 Sporting Clays event created $8716 in net revenue for WEAT-NTS thanks to partici-
pating teams and firm sponsorship. Events such as this demonstrate the importance of your
participation in our events to help support our organization. Each year, we hope to continue to
increase our turn-out and participation at our events such as the seminar and sporting clays
and are open to any other ideas or feedback.
Daryl Hall Memorial Golf Tournament
The North Texas Section has provided volunteers and other support for the annual Daryl Hall
Memorial Golf classic. The Golf Classic is coordinated by and all proceeds go to the Daryl Hall
Family Fund. It was announced at the tournament that Daryl Hall’s childrens’ college educa-
tions have been fully funded; The Daryl Hall Family Fund contributed $5000 from tournament
proceeds to WEAT-NTS, to be deposited in the WEAT-NTS Daryl Hall Scholarship Fund, which
(along with the WEAT-NTS Scholarship Fund) is on deposit in our professionally-managed ac-
count. The Daryl Hall Family Fund trustees are working with WEAT-NTS to make this an offi-
cial WEAT-NTS event beginning in 2016.
Concluding Comments
Members of the Executive Committee invest considerable time behind the scenes planning and man-
aging the Section’s finances. This was our first fiscal year under the new budgeting plan, and it pro-
vided a good bit of new information with respect to how our funds are managed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The section remains on strong financial footing. We issued checks for over $20,000 for both the WEAT-NTS and the Daryl Hall Scholarships, and our executive committee has authorized an increase in this amount for the coming fiscal year. Our scholarship program has grown to be a competitive program and now requires hard decisions by our scholarship committee. Most importantly, this is a testament that WEAT-NTS is determined to continue our success and devotion to the enrichment of our industry. Please continue to support us through your attendance, participation and sponsorships! Additional de-tailed information on these financials and other trends will be presented at the November 2015 WEAT luncheon meeting - we look forward to seeing you there!
Respectfully Submitted,
Mark A. Perkins, Treasurer

CAST Conference 2015—VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
WEAT will have a joint booth with TAWWA and EPA Region 6 at the CAST Conference in Fort Worth on Novem-ber 12-14 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. CAST is the Conference for the Advancement of Science Teach-ers and is attended by K–12 science teachers from throughout the State of Texas. Visit their website http://www.statweb.org/ for more information about the 2015 CAST Conference. We provide educational materials to teachers as it relates to the water environment. The North Texas Section is looking for volunteers in 2 hour shifts to help with the booth. Planning is underway, so if you are interested in volunteering a few hours of your time, please contact Amy Robinson at [email protected] or at 817.916.2927 and refer to the flyer in this newsletter
Future City Competition—VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Since its inception in 1992, the Future City (FC) Competition has become one of the largest engineering educa-tion programs in the US. The FC competition is open to all public, private, parochial and home school 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The competition is designed to introduce engineering and help the students gain a better under-standing of how their communities work and become more informed citizens. By applying math and science to real world problems, students learn how to utilize the Engineering Design Process to create solutions. The FC competition is divided into regional competitions that send the winning regional teams to compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C. The local North Texas FC Competition website is www.dfwfuturecity.org. Please visit this site for additional information and to register as an Engineer-Mentor or Judge.
The 2015-2016 Topic: Waste Not, Want Not Challenge The 2015-2016 Challenge: Design an innovative city-wide solid waste disposal system, for your future city that is safe, environmentally sound, and energy efficient.
Through the FC program, students will work as a team under the guidance of a teacher and a technical profes-sional. Students will also use a popular award-winning computer game, SimCity, to design a logical model of a future city. Students get to realize their design with a physical scale model built with recycled materials, Re-search and write an essay on an assigned engineering topic. They will finally communicate their design to a panel of judges in a public presentation, and see firsthand how engineers turn ideas into reality.
Engineer-Mentors are part of the team. They work directly with the students and teacher, acting as advisors, and are involved in all phases of the competition. The Engineer-Mentor provides technical assistance and real-life experience as the students work on the competition. WEAT has been a sponsor of a special award for the past two years and many WEAT members have served as volunteers for Engineer-Mentors and Judges.
For more information or guidance, contact Mark S. Mihm, P.E. at [email protected] and at telephone 972-960-4422.
Career Day K-12—VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Career Day encourages children to begin thinking about what they might want to be when they grow up. As another school year begins, so does the op-portunity for us to participate in Career Day at our children’s school. Career Day gives students an opportunity to learn about different careers and vocations by exposing them to fascinating, important, and COOL careers, opening their minds to exciting worlds they may not normally see. Plus, our children are proud to have their par-ent talk to their friends about what they do. Many school districts have already scheduled their Career Day events, so check out your child’s school district website or ask their teachers about how you can get involved. Let’s make a difference in our community and teach our children and their friends about what we do for our com-munity and environment. Contact Amy Robinson at [email protected] or 817.916.2927 for more infor-mation or ideas for Career Day presentations or activities.
