CX INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: 40 YEARS OF LOOKING FORWARD (1978 – 2018) CONTROVERSIES CHALLENGES CONSENSUS Dedication to combine academia and professional practice is reflected in the CX International Vascular and Endovascular Symposium. founded in 1978 when Roger Greenhalgh was a Senior Lecturer. His series of annual books began then also. The symposium’s main objective is to discuss Controversial topics within the vascular and endovascular fields, Challenge the evidence and reach Consensus among participants. The symposium started in 1978 and over the years has become one of the top 4 global vascular meetings in the world, 2 being driven by endovascular surgeons and 2 by interventional cardiologists. The Charing Cross International Symposium was held at Imperial College until 2012, always in April, during the Easter College recess. Since 2013, due to its record numbers of attendance exceeding 4000, it is held at Olympia Grand in the west of London, UK. At its 40th meeting of "looking forward", it nevertheless celebrates the convening of the European Society for Vascular Surgery at CX on 6th May 1997 after a huge initiative from within the then Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Attendance at CX was from 86 different countries in 2017. In 1996, the European Board of Vascular Surgery was founded again from initiatives which began within the Vascular Society, GBI in Pro- Continent of Europe days within the British Isles. It was with the blessing of the European Board of Surgery. The Council of the ESVS and EBVS meet at CX every year. EDUCATION INNOVATION EVIDENCE

PRESIDENT: EUROPEAN BOARD OF SURGERY Two members are elected from each EU member state to address standards of:

1. Surgical Training 2. Surgical Qualification 3. Continuing Professional Development 4. Quality Control

I have represented the UK via the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons of England since 1994 until 2007 and served time as President of Surgery for the UEMS (1998-2002) and then the Board (2002-2006). The Board is responsible for the European Board of Surgery Qualification (EBSQ). We created European Surgical Boards in Vascular (1996), Coloproctology (1998), Trauma (1999), General Surgery (2000) and Endocrine Surgery (2002). In 2005, the complete surgical disciplines were brought together as a federation, each represented by the president of each section. I was honoured to serve as inaugural President of the European Federation of Surgery (2005-2008).

7

CHAIRMAN OF DIRECTORS, EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR VASCULAR SURGERY LTD I became founder chairman in 1987 and convened the first European Society for Vascular Surgery at Charing Cross. The directors are responsible for the contractual arrangements with a publisher. The annual profits shared 50:50 between the Society and Elsevier are substantial.

DEAN & PRINCIPAL OF THE MEDICAL SCHOOL (1993 - 1997) I was invited to serve by academic colleagues Professor Chris Kennard, Professor Charles Coombes and Professor Sir Tiny Maini and others in 1992 after a poor RAE and with Charing Cross Hospital and the Accident & Emergency Department under threat of closure by the Secretary of State for Health. Our strategy contributed to the creation of a new Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College in 1997. During my time as Dean, we commenced a difficult restructuring programme before becoming a merged part of Imperial. The Imperial College Faculty of Medicine is in the top five universities in the world.
