ongratulations to all those members who came to the

Torrens Parade Grounds on Sunday 16th October and supported SA Jag Day.

It was too wet to use Elder Park.

I don’t think we have ever had a wetter SA Jag Day but I was pleased to see that over 60 vehicles were on display (including the Jaguar engined racing boat).

Thank you to all those who generously supported Cats & Cans with donations of goods to the Salvation Army.

Any feedback about the event is welcome as part of our review process.

Our National Rally committee convened by Di Adamson has been

Club Torque The Presidents Rap

C hard at work planning the SA hosted National Rally for 2018.

Next year’s National Rally is in Port Stephens 24th – 27th March 2017. There is a national XJC tour as well.

Over the next couple of months there are several motoring related activities where members can be involved.

These include All steamed Up at Mannum, the Adelaide Motor Sport Festival at Victoria Park, Prima Tour 2016, Mallala MSCA super sprints, All Euro Day at Glenelg, Coffee and Cars gatherings at Blackwood, the national XK rally in Canberra, register Christmas functions, and our own Christmas General meeting in December.

All British Day is early next year on February 12th but entries close mid-November. Please refer to our events calendar on the club website.

Our club Executive Committee is in the process of discussing club priorities for this financial year and I would be pleased to hear any ideas from members.

I will raise this at our November general meeting if you wish to comment or otherwise send me an email.

We have the opportunity of displaying our Jaguars at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

The Club has purchased 20 Display positions which covers a Jaguar entry and driver entry. If you bring a passenger, they must purchase a ticket online at http://adelaidemotorsportfestival.oztix.com.au/Default.aspx?Event=60823.

One day ticket is $30 and two day ticket is $50. If you are interested in displaying your Jaguar, you will need to register with

me by email to [email protected] . You are required to meet at Rose Park at approx. 7.45am and your vehicle must remain

Club Torque Editor’s Column ell SA Jag Day is done and dusted, (or maybe drowned)

and with Julian I thank everyone who participated. Those who attended seemed to enjoy the day despite the bitter weather.

So, now, looking ahead there are two more up coming events where we have the opportunity to show our cars and promote the club.

I speak of the Motor Sport Festival and Grand Prix Revival November 19-20. Please speak to Di Adamson if you want your car to feature in our clubs display.

Secondly there is All Euro Day on November 27. To be held on Wigley Reserve, Glenelg. See further details on page 10.

Both these event give the opportunity to promote the club amongst a younger generation in an attempt to boost interest in the

Jaguar Marque and our club.

The Jaguar National Rally Web Page is now up and running.

If you are planning to attend the National Rally you may like to join in the “Jaguar XJC Tour” that will arrive in Port Stephens on the Friday in time for the Rally commencement. Full details of the tour can be found here: www.xjc.com.au or speak to me personally. Currently we have 9 cars registered for this tour from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. We anticipate having a significant display of Jaguar XJCs and Daimler

W Coupes at the National Rally Display Day.

Finally your Executive Committee has decided to conduct two LOG BOOK and MEMBERSHIP renewal days next year to assist in the process of membership renewal, log book up-dating as well as providing the opportunity for vehicle 3 yearly inspections.

We will bring you more information in the new year, so stay tuned.

Minutes of the General Meeting held on Tuesday 4th October 2016

Welcome: In the absence of new president Julian Lugg who is returning from overseas, Phil Prior welcomed everyone. Although not wearing his newly minted Vice President badge, he asked that members wear their name tags.

Clipsal 500 March 2017 Jaguar is the featured marque. 30-35 cars will be in marque for 4 days. Open cars required for driving Clipsal drivers around the track. Will probably need to fit a platform for guests to sit on.

Adelaide Motorsport Festival 19&20 November 2016, 20 cars each day for which the Club pays the entry fee for the driver, you pay for your passenger. Register your interest with Di, don’t have to be the same cars on both days. Purchase tickets on line, not available on the day.

Jag Day 16 October: As many cars as possible wanted, weather permitting display will be in Elder Park but this will be confirmed by the Adelaide City on Friday before. If weather forecast not favourable the display will be on the Torrens Parade Ground. The web site will be updated and register secretaries to advise members by email. Volunteers are required by 8am, a show of hands was asked for accredited traffic marshals who will be needed. Cars from 9am. Don’t forget donations for Cats & Cans, the Salvation Army will be on hand to collect non-perishable goods. Please

complete your numbered Shannon’s card for your car to be easily identified for the public vote. No cars to leave before 3pm.

ACJC AGM Peter Holland; New Chairperson a go ahead person and wants to see improvement in relationship with clubs.

James Scrimshaw from Jaguar, sales increase 131% year on year.

Combined clubs magazine being talked about but needs to sell itself, perhaps an electronic newsletter. Envisaged a free for all, so talk to your committee if you have anything that you think needs to be looked at a national level.

Updating of National Rally Manual being done to reflect changes in concourse etc. There are a huge number of trophies, 50% of which are redundant which will make Presentation Nights more interesting.

Anecdotes are wanted for a National Rally 50th anniversary commemorative book but minimal response.

Editor Phil will hand over the magazine to Dane Wilden after his Uni exams. Always looking for Members Pride articles from club members. Don’t have to write a tome, just a few paragraphs and some photos please.

Events Coordinator Arcadia and Jim have not been able to access info on National Rally website, try again later.

MSCA Barry advised that CAMS calendar shows Motorsport Festival in October in error.

Library Tom has huge donation of magazines including Classic Wings which have proved very popular.

Regalia Di Adamson and models showed samples of new regalia, 2 mens polo shirts, shirts both long and

short sleeved, ladies 2 styles of polo shirt and a jacket. They have club logo on them and can have register name also if wanted. Orders are to be on-line. Costs approx. $32 shirt $72 jacket

Jayde Deverson: a previous Jaguar Drivers Club member spoke about his business Garage Mahal. Think about your wildest dreams (and $s) for the ultimate garage. Everything bespoke, lighting and fitments, flooring etc etc, no 2 garages will even remotely resemble each other. Based in SA with work in Victoria and NSW and then on to Hong Kong and Macau. Think screen and roll out speakers for your very own indoor drive-in experience for perhaps 10 or more cars. Or, secret cellar as well as mezzanine for cars.

On Sunday 16th October we had over 60 cars present for SA Jag Day at the Torrens Parade Ground.

This was a good turnout considering the very wet weather conditions.

The decision to move from Elder Park to the Parade Ground turned out to be correct with the bonus use of the Hall and toilets.

Thank you to those generous members who donated goods to the Salvation Army as part of Cats & Cans.

Our patron Ian Webber was welcomed by president Julian Lugg to formally open the event. Rick Luff as the MC for the day.

We did not run the normal People’s Choice as the rain prevented this activity. However we did ask the two representatives from Shannons to choose a car for us based on their own appreciation. The winner will be announced at our club Christmas evening in December.

Thank you to the organising committee for their hard work and support in preparing for the event.

Julian Lugg convened the committee but particular thanks go to Dave Burton for taking over while Julian was away. Other members of the team included Alan Bartram, Malcolm Adamson, Steve Arthur, Reg Wymond, Phil Prior, Roland Donders, Di Adamson, Trevor Norley, Tim White, Paul Moore, Ron Palmer, Bob Charman, Pete & Kathy Taylor, register secretaries and numerous volunteers.

It was pleasing to see the number of

additional helpers on the day both in setting up and in packing up.

The support and cooperation from both the Adelaide City Council staff and the Parade Ground staff was also most appreciated.

In spite of the weather conditions many people provided feedback that they still had an enjoyable day.

The sales of club regalia were good and some new members joined the club.

Special thanks go to our food vendors (Rotary Club of Hyde Park, Twisted Barista, and Strawberries Galore) for their support. We appreciated the Rotary Club of Hyde Park volunteers who braved the wet conditions to provide the BBQ food for us. Thank you also to our sponsors, Shannons Insurance and Solitaire who set up displays. We also appreciate those who generously put their vehicles on display.

We hope for better weather conditions next year!

The XK, Mk 7,8 & 9 Register’s activity for October was the hosting of the successful Border Run based at Tanunda.

Peter and Judy Goodale had organised a good mix of social and Jaguar activities which showed off the Barossa region to

advantage over the three days of 7,8 and 9 October. 28 people and 14 cars were present with roughly half from SA and

half from Victoria.

Carl Lindner’s collection was visited in beautiful weather on the Saturday and there was time to explore the local sights in the

afternoon. On Sunday we enjoyed a run further afield with lunch at Springton and a visit to another car collection.

The success of the weekend can be measured by the fact that discussion has begun on plans for the 2017 Border Run.

The Register’s November meeting will be at 8.00pm on Wednesday 2nd at 186A Goodwood Road, Millswood.’

New E-Pace SUV will be Jaguar's first electric vehicle

Jaguar's first foray into the EV market will be with the E-Pace, a performance-oriented SUV

due to go on sale in 2018

Electric vehicles are a growing market in the UK, and more premium marques are launching their own zero-emissions models in a bid to attract eco-conscious customers.

Until now, Jaguar has stayed out of this market, but that will change in 2018 when the British company launches its own electric vehicle - the E-Pace SUV. The so-called E-Pace - the name has yet to be officially confirmed by Jaguar - will take on the likes of the VW Tiguan, Seat Ateca and Nissan Qashqaiin the booming small SUV market.

The E-Pace is due to be revealed in full before the end of the year, and will be the smaller sibling of the F-Pace SUV. It's expected to offer a lower roofline and even more dramatic styling. It's understood that while Jaguar will aim to offer the usual benefits of an SUV with the E-Pace - a large, practical interior and go-anywhere driving capability - the car's emphasis will be on vivd performance and handling and exceptional refinement.

With driving dynamics playing such an important role for the E-Pace, the new SUV will get four-wheel drive as standard. Its batteries will be laid along the length of

the car, under the floor. Early prototype tests of the E-Pace's battery pack have delivered a range of up to 300 miles in ideal conditions. For reference, the Tesla Model X, which is likely to be the E-Pace's closest EV competitor, can deliver up to 237 miles in standard form.

Power for the E-Pace will come from two electric motors: one driving the front wheels and another for the rears. Together, they'll produce a combined 308bhp.

The E-Pace will face a wide variety of competiton, both from other small SUVs and from established pure electric vehicles like the Tesla Model S and Model X, Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe - and also from plug-in hybrid SUVs like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, BMW X5 xDrive40e, Mercedes GLC350e.

Like the F-Pace SUV, the E-Pace will be Jaguar's first entry into an expanding and global market, so it could quickly become a big seller for the company. Jaguar's sister brand, Land Rover, will be watching closely, too, because the E-Pace's internal structure and powertrain will eventually be used on an all-electric version of the Range Rover luxury SUV. That car is expected to arrive around 2019.

Design and Styling of the ‘S’-type—Part 2

The Grandfather After a few years building beautiful sidecars for motorcycles, William Lyons put his foot into the world of automobiles. Swallow became a coachbuilder installing Lyons designed high-quality hand built fashionable bodies onto other manufacturers’ rolling chassis with their engine. The most famous were Austin’s Seven, but also on Wollesley and Standard chassis.

In 1931, Lyons commissioned Rubery Owen to build a chassis to his specifications, designeda body said at the time to be “a very attractive car that is, if anything, in advance of the times…”. He powered it with a Standard six cylinder 2 ½ litre engine (45 bhp).

This was named the S.S.I, to be followed by a smaller S.S.II on the Standard Nine chassis with their 1- litre engine 28 bhp @4,000 rpm). It has not been resolved whether ‘S.S.’ stood for “Standard Swallow” or ”Swallow Special”.

By the mid-1930s, Lyons was dissatisfied with the S.S.’s performance, space and styling. For the first, he had Harry Weslake design an overhead valve cylinder head for the Standard 2 ½-litre engine, and added twin 1¼ in. SU carburettors.

Lyons wanted 90 bhp. Weslake’s engine gave 103.3 on the test stand. For space and design, Lyons designed a completely new body shell and polished the valve cover! This became the new S.S. 2.5-litre Jaguar.

Lyons also recognized that there was a market for a smallercar and designed the 1.5-litre SS Jaguar using Standard’s 1608 cc side-valve 4-cyl engine. This was followed by a special 3485 cc engine, built by Standard, with Lyons’ overhead valve head, twin 1½ in. SUs, and aluminium sump, two three-branch exhaust manifolds, twin tail pipes and silencers giving over 120 bhp. This engine continued after World War 2 in the MkIV and MkV.

The conception of the Jaguar XK engine, by Bill Lyons, Wally Hassan, Bill Heynes and Claude Baily, is well-known by most Jaguar enthusiasts so will not be repeated here. For a comprehensive history of the XK engine, see chapter 6 of “Jaguar Saloon Cars”, by Paul Skilleter, Foulis, April 1980.

Lyons had a good eye for design and his direction to the team was for a ‘prestige’ engine. One that was sophisticated and refined, looked good on paper as well as in metal and

could be further developed. After experiments with designs based upon Standard lower ends, Lyons decided that his new engine should be designed from scratch.

The prototype engines, as they were designed, built and tested, were codenamed ‘X’ followed by another letter. The penultimate results were both dual overhead cam engines. The ‘XJ’ was a four cylinder 2-litre that developed 146 bhp. It was later loaned to Lt. Col. A.T.G. (Goldie) Gardner for his MG EX135 streamliner in which he set a record of 132.6 mph, for the average of two runs in each direction, on the Ostend-Jabbeke motorway in Belgium. The other experimental engine, which went into production, was the ‘XK’, initially a 3.2 litre six cylinder design. Although intended for the planned MkVII saloon, body production problems delayed its launch and the XK engine was first shown at the 1948 London Motor Show in an XK120 roadster.

It was a 3442 cc straightsix with dual overhead-cams and twin sidedraft SU carburettors developing 160 bhp at 5,100 rpm. The engine (also on a display stand) was admired for its twin highly polished aluminum camshaft covers, two black vitreous enamel exhaust manifolds protruding on one side and a pair of 1¾ in. SU carburetters on the other and its

finned aluminium oil sump. An XK-engined XK120, driven by Ron (Soapy) Sutton, was timed at 132.596 mph on the Ostend-Jabbeke motorway on May 30th, 1949 and in 1950 an XK120 averaged over 100 mph for 24 hours, and over 130 mph for an hour, on the banked oval track at L’autodrome de Linas, Montlhéry, France. The engine would go one to power five winners of the 24 heures du Mans at Le Mans, France.

Over the years, three XK engine capacities were offered: 2.483-litre (120 bhp @ 5,750 rpm); 3.442-litre (210 bhp @ 5,500 rpm) 3.781- litre (220 bhp @ 5,500) and, after the ‘S’-types’ announcement, 4.235-litre (245 bhp @ 5,500 rpm).

When our beloved ‘S’-type was introduced in 1963, the XK engine was well developed and had proved to be one of the most rugged, long lasting and efficient power units for decades. The choice offered in the ‘S’-type was the 3.4-litre or the 3.8-litre. The 3.8 litre ‘S’-type outsold the 3.4 litre 15,135 to 10, 036 The ultimate XK engine was developed for German Jaguar distributor Peter Lindner’s, 1964 E-type Lightweight low drag coupe. It developed 344 bhp at

6,500 rpm on the factory dynamometer. The racing year started well when Lindner’s Lightweight qualified 6th fastest (1st in class) at the Le Mans test in April, but ended tragically

Jaguar announced, in 2014, the production of six continuation Lightweight E-types to complete the production run planned in the 1960s. Each will have a new XK 3,868 cc straight-six twin-cam Petrol injected engine delivering 340 Horsepower at 6,500 rpm.

car was continually delayed. Proposals from both Jaguar's in-house designers and Pininfarina were received. Eventually, it was decided an internal design would be carried through to production and, in February 1981, the British Leyland board approved £80 million to produce the new car.

Jaguar historians claim that the XJ40 was the last car which company founder Sir William Lyons had contributed to during its protracted development phase. The previous generation XJ had been the final Jaguar to be developed wholly under Lyons' leadership - although he continued to take an active consultative role within Jaguar design, long after he had retired from the day-to-day management of the firm following its merger in 1966 with the British Motor Corporation.[

During development, the XJ40 pioneered significant improvements to the way Jaguar designed, built, and assembled cars. Among these improvements was a 25 per cent reduction in the number of bodywork

When the XJ40 was discontinued in 1994, it was followed by the X300 platform XJ.

Throughout the 1970s Jaguar had been developing "Project XJ40", which was an all-new model intended to replace the original XJ6. Scale models were being built as early as 1972. Due to the 1973 oil crisis and problems at parent company British Leyland, the

panels required per car (e.g. three pressings needed for a Series 3 door compared with one for a XJ40 door), resulting in not only a more efficient assembly process, but also a weight saving and a stiffer structure. Greater attention to panel gaps improved the drag factor (reduced from 0.849 Cd to 0.762 Cd), while also improving the fuel economy and lowering wind noise inside the cabin.

Initially, only two engines were offered across the XJ40 models: a 2.9 L and a 3.6 L version of the AJ6 inline-six. In 1990 the 3.6L was replaced by a 4.0L model and in 1991 the 2.9L was replaced by a 3.2L model. In 1993, the XJ12 and Daimler Double Six (both equipped with the Jaguar V12 engine) were added to the available models.

During the development of the XJ40, British Leyland had considered providing the Rover V8 engine for the car, which would have eliminated the need for future Jaguar engine production. The XJ40 body shell was allegedly engineered to prevent fitting V-configuration engines such as the

Rover V8 which British Leyland management had desired; this delayed the introduction of the V12-powered XJ12 until 1993 as the front had to be extensively redesigned.

The automatic gearbox used in the 2.9 L, 3.2 L and 3.6 L six-cylinder cars was the four-speed ZF 4HP22. On the 4.0 L, the four-speed ZF 4HP24 was used. A stronger automatic gearbox was required for the V12-equipped cars, and the four-speed GM 4L80-E was selected. The manual gearbox fitted to early cars was five speed Getrag 265, while later cars received the Getrag 290.

The automatic transmission selector was redesigned to allow the manual selection of forward gears without accidentally selecting neutral or reverse. This new feature was dubbed the "J-Gate" and has carried over to more recent Jaguar models.

The curvaceous lines of the outgoing Series XJ were replaced by the more angular, geometric shape of the XJ40. The nose of the car would accommodate either matched pairs of round headlights, or rectangular single units; the latter were fitted to the higher-specification Sovereign and Daimler trim levels, and also to all cars for the US market.

The bumper is a visually distinct black-rubber-covered bar that runs the full

width of the car and incorporates the sidelights and indicator lights. The bonnet is hinged at the front. Window frames are either chromed or black, depending on model. Rain gutters, door mirrors, and door handles are also finished in chrome. All XJ40s have a chrome surround for the windscreen and a single windscreen wiper.

Early low-specification cars were fitted with metric-sized steel wheels and plastic wheel covers. From 1991, the wheels were changed to non-metric sizing.

The interior of the XJ40 was trimmed with either walnut or rosewood, and either cloth or leather upholstery (depending on model.)

Until 1990, cars were fitted with an instrument binnacle that used digital readouts. Instrumentation included a display named the "Vehicle Condition Monitor" (VCM), which contained a 32x32 dot-matrix screen capable of 34 functions. The VCM was able to alert the driver of bulb failure, brake pad wear, unlatched doors/boot, and low coolant level. From 1990 on, the binnacle was redesigned to use analogue gauges.

Early cars used a two-spoke steering wheel that was later changed for a four-spoke airbag-equipped wheel. The glovebox was

removed on later cars because of the space occupied when the passenger-side airbag was introduced. Some XJ40s bound for the United States were fitted with automatic seat belts.

These cars seem to have suffered from a love them or hate them response from Jaguar enthusiasts though the years. For many the angular body styling that was a significant departure from the Series saloons it replaced is the main reason for the hate. On the other hand others loved the new features, comfort and reliability.

Today the XJ40 remains probably the most affordable and reliable entry level model for those wanting a Jaguar saloon. With some careful searching a very nice well maintained XJ40 can be bought for as little as $5,000 but like any car that is 30 years old there will be many cheaper examples that will need considerable attention and maintenance.

PANASONIC JAGUAR RACING FINISHES 12TH IN FORMULA E DEBUT IN HONG KONG

(HONG KONG) – October 9, 2016 – Today Jaguar returned to racing on the challenging downtown Hong Kong street circuit in the FIA Formula E Championship, marking its debut with a 12th place finish in a drama filled Hong Kong ePrix.

Running for the first time, on a Formula E circuit during practice, drivers Adam Carroll and Mitch Evans, both quickly got up to speed ahead of qualifying, when the tight and slippery Hong Kong street circuit in the Central Victoria Harbor area, caught out several of the leading contenders. This caused the cancellation of the Super Pole qualifying session. Jaguar drivers Adam Carroll, in the number 47 car and Mitch Evans, in the number 20 car, kept out of trouble and out of the wall, to qualify 14th and 16th respectively. Adam unfortunately had a three-place grid penalty applied for an earlier infringement in practice, dropping him to 17th on the grid.

In the race both Panasonic Jaguar Racing drivers made good starts and steadily climbed through the order, as the challenging conditions and close racing took its toll. Mitch was up to 10th from 15th on the grid and Adam up to 11th from 17th on the grid when a safety car was deployed on lap 18.

Following the safety car and pit stops Adam drove strongly to finish the race in 12th but unfortunately for Mitch, an electrical issue was discovered on his car and to prevent any further damage, it was decided not to

run his second car leading to his retirement.

James Barclay, Team Director: “Panasonic Jaguar Racing can take away many positives from our Formula E debut in Hong Kong. The team and drivers have not raced before in Formula E and we have bedded in as a team, gelled well and learned a huge amount. Our energy conservation in the race was second to none and we have been encouraged by our consistent race pace which saw us move forward through the field. There is good baseline on which to build, and we look forward to Marrakesh and continuing our development.”

Adam Carroll, #47: “I am feeling pretty pleased. We showed decent and consistent race pace and we were particularly strong on energy management. I would like to say a big thank you to the whole Panasonic Jaguar Racing team. Everybody’s worked really hard to get here and we’ve learnt fast all weekend. There is much more to come.”

Mitch Evans, #2: “It's a shame I wasn’t able to complete the race this time but I’ve learnt a lot. I made a good start and picked up a couple of places and was running well in the pack. The Jaguar I-Type performed well and I can’t wait to get back in the car to race in Marrakesh!”
