I’m excited and humbled on this the 70th year anniversary of my birth on this earthly plane. When I look back on it all, it seems almost dreamlike and yet, very real with it’s uniquely memorable moments that deeply touched my heart forever. For they were all so special....many of which changed the course of my life and those around me.

I wish to thank all of you for letting me be a part of your life...for being so brave in these hard times that try the very dignity and livelihood of our families and our communities in so many ways. For once again, like so many other times in history, we are all at a crossroads that will decide the very soul of who we are and who we are not as a nation and as a people. I have faith that we will do the right thing. I have a prayer that we will do what is right.

For over 30 years now I have strived to do my part in healing and supporting those who are silenced and wounded, those without hope and who are unseen. I wish this country could see what I have witnessed these many years: brave folks standing up and telling the truth, even if it means they will be fired or labeled or worse. Folks who get up each morning trying to make this a better world for their children, their students and their communities. Folks on the brink of despair, but still persevering because they know our children depend on us and all those who sacrificed their lives for us to be able to get an education, a job, a home, a chance to vote, to have equal pay, to love who they want, and to have control of their our own bodies and dreams. As many of us have come to learn: it takes a village to raise a child.

And so I remember a quote by Maya Angelou: I come as one, but I rise a thousand.

On this special day in my life, may you each find and live your purpose in this lifetime...I certainly was gifted mine and I have strived to use it wisely and with continued gratitude.

And so, my dear friends, lovers of justice and colleagues, family and loved ones...it has been an honor to be of service and to have shared this precious life with you.

Too often we are afraid to begin a conversation about race and racism because we have had a bad experi-ence or feel that we will say something wrong or hurtful. This workshop is particularly exciting and satisfying because it allows everyone the opportunity to practice talking to someone who is different from themselves in a compassionate and honest way.
