Recently, I visited my family in Southern California. I saw my 18 month-old grandson, Milo, for several days in a row. We made each other laugh o en and for me, that made my trip worthwhile, even though I saw many other family members.

I suppose I started it by making faces behind a tray I held between Milo and me. I would pop up and down with a crazy-looking face. Milo was wary at first, sort of staring me down, but I kept at it and then he laughed. Milo’s laugh made me laugh. And that’s all it took.

Once I laughed out loud, Milo laughed again and then we’d start all over with the silly faces and we’d both laugh un l I couldn’t breathe. The more Milo laughed, the more I laughed. It seemed the volume of our laughter grew each me we did something funny. Right then and there I turned to the parents, Andrew and Justyne and said, “Okay, I’ve had my love fest and if I have to go home tomorrow I will be okay.”

What is that feeling you get when a child, especially your grandchild, laughs with you? It feels like love washing over you. I was drenched in Milo’s humorous and loving reac on and it was comfor ng and felt so good. I immediately thanked God for this special child.

We are beginning to hear laughter in our offices again. It’s not irreverent; it’s people beginning to feel at ease again, enough to make each other laugh. We have some very funny staff members and if you haven’t seen or heard some of their an cs, please stop in and get a dose of it.

We work hard and we laugh hard too! When we laugh, we relax and feel closer to one another and feel God’s love drenching over us. It’s a good feeling.

The joy of God’s love embrace you wholly,

It’s that me of year when we as a church start developing a budget for the year 2017. Therefore, it is that me of year when we as a church ask you what you will pledge for the year 2017. The tricky part is that we don’t want you to pledge towards the budget, we want you to pledge towards the ministries we do as a church.

As you prayerfully consider your pledge for 2017, here are reasons why we give:

One, we give because God is good. We give back for all that God has given us, all the rich blessings that we receive on a daily basis. Stop and consider what God does each day for you.

Two, we give toward the ministries of this church, all the things we do, from pastoral care to mission and everything in between. We give so these ministries can con nue. We give so we can serve God more.

Third, we want you to pledge because of what it does for your heart and soul and mind. It fosters generosity and a giving within your heart which causes you to grow closer to God.

The last two Sundays in October, Pastor Paul and I preached on all the ways to serve at Valley through all our ministries. On the First Sunday in November, Paul will ask you to pledge. About that me, you will receive a pledge card in the mail. We ask you to prayerfully consider and ask God what you should give for the year 2017. Return that card on Sunday, November 13, Pledge Card Sunday.

The following Sunday, November 20, is Thankful Sunday. We are thankful for all the blessings we have. On this day, we will receive new members. A er worship, we will hold a brief congrega onal mee ng to receive new elders and deacons. And then, we will have a brunch to celebrate together all our thanksgivings (see page 17 for all the fun doings at the brunch).

PLUS, on Sunday, November 30, the first Sunday in Advent, we begin an all-church study called “The Journey.” This is a me for us to come together as a whole congrega on to study together. (See next page for more informa on about this event.)

As you can see, November will be a wonderful month here at Valley. We believe God is doing, and will con nue to do, a new thing amongst us. “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:19). Let us watch with eager expecta on for this new thing as we con nue serving God together.

Generosity and More

VPC Library Book Review Healing Words for the Body, Mind, and Spirit: 101 Words to Inspire and Affirm. Caren Goldman.

Reviewed by Joan Larson

Do we ever stop to think how the common words we use every day can be healing? The author offers us 101 words and uses heart-warming anecdotes, prac cal affirma ons, poe c verses, and thought-provoking quotes that lead us on a journey of how each word can be healing on every level of our being. They cause us to embrace life fully. She speaks from her own experiences of the ten thousand joys and sorrows we face as human beings. Words hold power to heal us, not just to instruct or entertain. The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem All-Church Event Throughout Advent

Study Groups Begin November 17 Sermon Series Begins November 27

For five weeks in Advent we will follow the footsteps of Mary and Joseph as they travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, thereby gaining insight into our own journeys with Christ. Based on the book and lessons wri en by Adam Hamilton, each of us is encouraged to study, discuss and delve deeper into this familiar story and thereby gain insight into our own journey with Christ. You will have an opportunity to study with others in small groups or in a class, read a devo onal, and then hear a sermon on what you have studied. We believe this opportunity to come together as a whole Body of Christ will be healing for our hearts, souls and mind. Two books for a total of $10.00 will be used in the study. Every par cipant is encouraged to purchase both books to get the most from this journey. The Journey book contains background informa on, a summary of the lesson for the week and study/discussion ques ons. The Daily Devo onal includes a brief scriptural passage and lesson for each day of Advent. Six separate study groups will gather for about 75 minutes each week. The weekly lesson will concentrate on one topic. People will view a short DVD presenta on and then share in a brief discussion. Sermon topics will follow the previous week’s lesson. Our youth and children will study using their own material. You will be encouraged to sign up for a study group when you purchase your books. Beginning October 23, books will be available on Sunday mornings and in the church office during the week. All small groups will gather at the church, except for an addi onal Tuesday a ernoon group which will gather in the Celebra on Room at La Joya.

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study

Sundays at 8:45 a.m. in Classroom 5

So – Is God S ll in Charge? Ever doubt that God is in charge? During the month of November the Sunday morning Bible Study will explore how people in the past have affirmed the presence of God. Did you know that John wrote Revela on to people and communi es of faith who were tested by the mes in which they lived? They must have wondered at mes whether God had abandoned them – or simply did not have authority over some aspects of life. John wrote in the Revela on about uncovering what has been covered, or may not be widely known (learn the Greek word for this in class!). In this book John gives us hope that God will bring a new heaven and new earth, where jus ce and peace reign. Is your faith a li le shaky? Come to class each Sunday morning. Discuss, share and learn about the Creator. Everyone is invited and a study guide will be provided. Begin your Sunday with the Bible at 8:45 in Classroom 5.

Men’s Weekday Bible Studies Tuesdays at 8:00 a.m.

Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m.

Two church-sponsored men’s groups mee ng during the week would be glad

to have you join them! The first group meets on Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m. They are discussing Warren Wiersbe’s series of books on Ephesians. A group of six to twelve men meet at the Old Chicago Deli in the Green Valley Mall for one hour. The group meets for fellowship, food, and study and an all-around lively discussion. Dave Tompkins is the leader (399-3500). The second group, with about seven to thirteen men a ending each week, meets Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. This group meets at the church for one hour in Classroom 1. The group is facilitated by Larry Phillips (777-8027), but focuses on group discussion. They are studying Proverbs using the NavPress Life Change Series study guide. Join the group any me to par cipate in the discussion or just to listen. In either case, your presence will be welcomed. Lessons are self-contained, so feel free to join the group when able.

News of Note By Joel Pierce

This past October marked my fourth year serving in music ministry at Valley Presbyterian. I am so grateful to have walked into such a loving and God-centered community. I want to extend my gra tude, both to the choir and the congrega on, for con nually voicing your support for our music ministry. It is said you will never experience music-making the same way twice; the ensemble, players, conductors, and congrega on are ever changing. This is especially true in Green Valley as winter visitors begin to come through our doors again. So, “Thank you!” people of Valley Presbyterian Church, for the wonderful, exuberant music-making experiences we create week a er week in His name. And remember to sing with your whole heart...it will never be the same again!

Our November selec on is The Longest Ride by best-selling novelist Nicholas Sparks. Two couples, widely separated by age and experience, are about to have their lives intersect. Ira Levinson, 91 years old and stranded a er a car crash, is struggling to remain conscious when he is aided by the image of his dead wife, Ruth, as she recalls their life together. He clings to her image even though he knows she can’t be there in reality. College senior Sophia Danko meets cowboy Luke at a bull-riding event and is introduced to a far different life than she has known in the past. As she and Luke fall in love, she begins to imagine a different future for herself, but will it come to pass? These four lives will converge with unepected and far-reaching results. Please join us for a discussion of this heartwarming story led by Sheila Frahm. Contact Anne Morrison, (520) 399-0762, for addi onal informa on.

SHOWING: Call the Midwife, Christmas Special from Season 3. Although considered the season 3 finale, the CTM Christmas Special served in many ways as the start of a new direc on for the cri cally acclaimed series. It is the first episode without Jessica Raine, who, up un l the previous episode, portrayed protagonist Nurse Jenny Lee. Quickie cheat sheet: Call the Midwife is based on the memoirs of the same name by Jennifer Worth (a.k.a. Jenny Lee), and the end of season 3 saw Jenny, like her real-life counterpart, leave midwifery to pursue a career as a Marie Curie nurse. The Jenny-less Christmas Special was just as entertaining as any episode with Raine, which should be chalked up to CTM’s robust ensemble. In Poplar, Christmas 1958 is not just about the opening of presents, but also about the closing of deep wounds. War me trials are relived - and a new enemy confronted - before peace and love are restored. Call the Midwife Christmas Specials are deeply touching and moving episodes. Come watch it with us…and bring a friend!

Women’s Ministries Submitted by Gee-Gee Smith, WM Moderator

Our November Gathering will be held on the 15th at 11:30 a.m. Martha Ashton is our speaker, sharing her experience at the Presbyterian Women’s 2016 USA Mission Experience in San Francisco this past September. It will be a me to learn what we can do to help stop human trafficking, and support safe houses for women who experience abuse and refugees struggling to survive. We will also have a brief report on the Triennial Presbyterian Women’s Retreat held the last weekend of October. Tickets will be available on Sundays, Nov 6th and 13th, at the Women’s Ministries table a er worship service. Sarah Circle will be hos ng. There will be no Presby Gi this month, but we will take our annual Thank Offering suppor ng PW mission projects throughout this country and the world. A er the luncheon, the Yada Yada Book group will meet to discuss Book 3, The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Real, at 1 p.m. in classroom 1. The Presbytery de Cristo Cluster mee ng held on October 1 was a wonderful experience of fellowship and fun, a ended by 42 women from Papago, Holy Way, Southside and Valley Presbyterian Churches. We heard about the ministries and missions of these churches and were upli ed by our worship together. This will be the first of many Cluster Gatherings.

Our Staff at Crossroads Mission in Nogales Once each year a few of the staff here at VPC go down to Crossroads Mission to help prepare a lunch for about 90 people. There are many volunteers who work at Crossroads on a daily basis, and VPC tries to help out regularly (as o en as weekly). In addi on to all of the other wonderful volunteers here at the church who help out, staff gets a turn, too! This me our administrator, Steve, and his wife, Sue, along with our custodians, Danielle and Drew, represented VPC staff from approximately 9 a.m. to noon preparing, cooking, and serving a meal, which usually consists of a fruit salad, canned vegetable and main dish (some kind of casserole that the volunteers prepare and bake). This year the main dish was sausage, macaroni and cheese. Many people come from across the border to enjoy the lunch. Meals always depend upon the dona ons, and a erward, everyone gets to take home some bread or other goodies that have been donated – many by the local Safeway. What a fantas c way to serve our God!

The History of Christian Theology Continuing in November on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. in the Spiritual Life Center

The Inquisitors will con nue studying The History of Chris an Theology. All of us have been exposed to various por ons of Chris an theology, but our knowledge bases have gaping holes. We communicate regularly with other Chris ans of other denomina ons, and yet we do not understand where our fellow Chris ans are coming from. Join us as, with Professor Phillip Cary, we examine intriguing insights from a wide range of intellectual disciplines, including religion, history, and philosophy. Through this course, we will gain these benefits:

An understanding of the meaning of faith for today's Chris ans. The best way to understand one's own faith is to understand the faith of others. In this course, you explore how the differences among today's Chris ans first arose and why these differences ma ered so much to previous genera ons of believers that they have le their mark on Chris an life to this day. A fascina ng overview of the history of the Chris an church. From the Nicene Council to the Reforma on to Va can II, this course highlights the major events of church history and provides a valuable and enlightening complement to other courses on Western history. An apprecia on of the philosophical depth of Chris an thought. Professor Cary examines the intellectual rigor that underlies Chris an theology and explores the some mes frui ul, some mes conten ous rela onship between religion and philosophy. Through this course, you gain a deeper grasp of the role of Chris an theology within the larger intellectual history of the West.

Dr. Phillip Cary is a Professor of Philosophy at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, where he is also Scholar-in-Residence at the Templeton Honors College. He has also taught at Yale University, the University of Connec cut, and the University of Har ord. As a scholar, Professor Cary's specialty is the thought of Augus ne, but he has also published scholarly ar cles on Luther, the doctrine of the Trinity, and personal knowledge. This is just one of the Great Courses that Professor Cary has taught.

Session Notes A er a great meal and worshipping together, Session gathered for their business mee ng. A highlight was the Order of the Day presented by the Fellowship and Membership area of ministry. All elders lit candles from the Christ Candle and expressed the many ways fellowship is prac ced in our church. It was a reminder that fellowship exists in everything we do. A Congrega onal Mee ng was set for November 20 following the worship service to elect new Elders and Deacons for the year 2017. And a Grapevine Forum is scheduled for November 9 at 10 a.m. The resume for David Dethmers, the Temporary Execu ve Pastor, is available in the office for anyone who wishes a copy. The price for a niche in our Columbarium was raised to $500 (not under Ramada) and $600 (under the Ramada). It was noted that these price increases are s ll much lower than other churches. Rumors regarding Pastor Larry’s death con nue in the Green Valley Community and now in the schools. All elders were encouraged to con nue to stop the rumors when they hear them. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) will hold an all-day Care of Caregivers Retreat for staff, Elders and Deacons on November 29. This event will be held off campus.

The Grapevine – an Open Congregational Forum Thursday, November 17 at 10 a.m. in the Sanctuary

Our second Grapevine Forum offers a way for you to ask ques ons, make comments, and generally learn more about what’s going on at VPC as God con nues to lead us forward. We’ll have members of the VPC leadership available; all you need to do is bring yourself and your ques ons! You can even submit those ques ons in wri ng ahead of me to the office, care of Charlie Ashton, Clerk of Session. Please be sure, if you do so, to put your name and contact informa on on your submission so that we can contact you if there’s a ques on about your ques on.

The “Other” Staff at VPC Most of you are at least somewhat familiar with the staff you see at the church on Sundays (especially our pastors and our music director), but perhaps you aren’t familiar with the rest of the staff, or with exactly who does what. Below are the people who work during the week to keep our church running smoothly (in addi on to our pastors and Joel, of course!), along with some of the main tasks they perform.

Steve Rodine - Steve is the Church Administrator, so when the roof leaks, the big window cracks, the bathrooms need remodeling, or the church needs pain ng, he takes care of it. He also oversees the administra ve staff and the custodians.

Gay Larson - Gay is our Execu ve Secretary and works at the front desk. She’s the first person to step up (with a smile!) and help when a person needs assistance, informa on, or direc on. Gay also maintains our member database, keeps track of who is in the hospital, coordinates pa o sale pick-ups, works with the families who use our columbarium, and does a long list of other office tasks.

Carla Goings - Carla is our Administra ve Specialist. She is responsible for many of the publica ons needed for the church, including the Sunday bulle ns, the weekly e-blast that gets sent out by email, sessions reports, and memorial bulle ns.

Wendy Kopera - Wendy is on the sound board on Sunday mornings, publishes the Valley Voice, and maintains our website. She is also responsible for making sure all of our technology (computers, projectors, sound equipment, etc.) is working properly.

Chris Erickson - Chris is our Parish Nurse, and she works closely with Pastor Paul to make sure our people are cared for. She offers blood pressure screenings, teaches classes on topics like stress and falls, and provides a wealth of medical assistance and health educa on informa on to our people. She also visits with those who are homebound or ill, or who have health concerns.

Annie S - Annie is our Church Accountant and, among other things, makes sure our books are balanced, our bills are paid, and our staff gets their paychecks. Annie confiden ally tracks your pledges and offerings, and provides reports to you at the end of the year.

Danielle Pacheco, Drew Weaver, and Ray Esparza - Our wonderful team of custodians - keep the church beau ful, func onal, and ready for whatever is coming next. They help whoever needs assistance at a moment’s no ce. Danielle is the head custodian and also maintains our church calendar.

Peace and Justice Resource Committee News The School of Americas Watch (h p://www.soaw.org) held it's annual convergence in Nogales on the weekend of October 7, 8 and 9. The Presbyterian Peace Fellowship was a large part of this event, with various ac vi es in the surrounding area. Rev. Gene LeFebvre (cofounder of No More Deaths [in the desert]) received the 2016 Anne Barstow & Tom Driver Award for Excellence in Nonviolent Direct Ac on. On Sunday, October 9, at St. Marks Presbyterian Church, Rich Ufford Chase, former PCUSA General Assembly Moderator, was the keynote speaker. On Saturday morning, October 8, Cara Bissell was one of three people holding the Na onal Veterans For Peace Banner leading a march across the border to protest the deporta ons of U.S. soldiers who served our country. They met with several of the deported U.S. soldiers on the Mexican side, who led them in solidarity to where there were joint services and entertainment at a loca on known as "the wall".

Report from the CFRT The Congrega onal Financial Review Team met on October 18 to review the financial statements prior to the Session stated mee ng on October 19, 2016. They also reviewed the collec on rate for pledges and giving history year-to-date for the past four years. Summary of the mee ng is as follows: Based on the reviews, although we are doing well as demonstrated by the numbers below, the team believes now is not the me to make changes to the 2016 budget The Team is looking for one or two more financially literate members of the congrega on to enhance the quarterly review process The status of the Budget to Actual as of September 30, 2016 is as follows: Actual Budget Variance Total income and transfers $ 698,245 $ 700,376 ($ 2,131) Total expense $ 678,443 $ 709,920 $ 31,477 Net Income $ 19,802 ($ 9,544) $ 29,346 So, for the first nine months of the year, we are s ll in the “black” by $19,802 and ahead of budget by $29,346. We had budgeted for a loss at this me based on historical figures for September which indicated that this would be the first month we turned nega ve. Although we are very thankful for the posi on we are currently in, we encourage you to con nue to keep your pledge current for the balance of the year. The Finance Office will be sending out 10-month pledge statements in early November to remind members of their commitments Thank you for your financial commitment to the work of Valley Presbyterian Church as we, together, seek “to know Christ and make him known through word and deed.”

Stephen Ministers Training

Begins January 6, 2017

Stephen Ministers are caring, loving, and healing. We care about each other; we share the love of Jesus Christ with our care receivers; and we are instruments for God to heal our souls and spirits. When was the last me someone really listened to you? We’re talking about the undistracted, full-a en on kind of listening. That’s one of the ways Stephen Ministers care for others. Stephen Ministers care for those who are making that long journey through the valley of a life crisis. If God is calling you to this kind of caring ministry, please contact Pa Bright, Recrui ng Chairman (520-305-3275), or any of our Stephen Leaders.

Stephen Ministry Celebrates 20 Years

at VPC! On Stephen Ministry Sunday, October 23, Valley Presbyterian Church celebrated 20 years of Stephen Ministry by honoring the 233 people who have been trained since 1996. The original class included Punky Griggs (Stephen Leader then), Mary Ruth Jaggard, Geri Appleton, and Bobbie Richards. A filmed interview with these ladies was shown in Charter Hall during fellowship hour. All are s ll very ac ve in the church with Mary Ruth s ll being an ac ve Stephen Minister. Congratula ons! We value all our Stephen Ministers, ac ve and inac ve, because their skills con nue to be used in their lives and in the lives of our congrega on even a er re rement!

Stephen Ministers Stephen Ministers provided over 220 hours of care during the summer months of July through September, even with many being out of town. Our care was divided in these general areas:

Illness/hospital visits 7% Demen a 14% Loneliness 26% Homebound/nursing home 30% Spiritual/emo onal crisis 21% Family crisis 2%

I’m going to talk about a li le different technology this month because I had to do a lot of research on this par cular topic and I learned some things that could be helpful to other pet owners. I’ve men oned before that I work with a couple of dog rescues, and one of them is just now looking into microchipping. As I began to research the vast

number of microchip providers I was shocked to learn that we aren’t quite as “safe” as we think we are when we microchip our pets. One problem is that different manufacturers use different frequencies for their chips, and the scanners used to read the chips may or may not read all three of the frequencies used by the various manufacturers. An a empt has been made to standardize the frequency in all chips, but even though a standard frequency was chosen, there are s ll large-volume chip manufacturers that use the other two frequencies. I read horror stories of pets being euthanized at a shelter because the scanner used there did not detect the chip in the pet due to the frequency difference between the scanner and the chip. I think this is probably not the norm, but the idea that it could happen at all is very frightening! If that problem isn’t bad enough, there is also an issue with microchip registries. You would think there would be one universal place to look up microchip informa on, but that’s not the case. Most microchip companies have a registry that only includes their own chips, although they may allow other brands to be registered with them as well. That means the person who finds your pet and properly scans the chip may have to look in mul ple places to find your informa on and get your pet back to you. I think one of the worst (and most confusing) things I learned was how complicated it can be to register your pet’s microchip in the first place. I’m going to generalize a bit because what I found seems to be true for most of the companies. In theory, once you register your pet, the informa on is there indefinitely. You almost always have to pay a fee for this registra on, but only once. However, many of the companies also offer an annual membership that includes some other bells and whistles. The problem comes in when you a empt to register, because they don’t show the op ons clearly and it can be difficult (nearly impossible, even) to figure out how to register without signing up for an annual membership you might not need or want. The registra on pages make it appear that the annual membership is what you need to register your pet, and it can be very misleading. I read many accounts of people accusing the companies of decep ve prac ces for this reason. I was curious about just how hard it could be, so I went to one major microchip site and a empted to register my pets (even though they have a different brand of chip). I put in all of my pet’s info, and when I proceeded to the payment page, sure enough, the only op on was the annual membership. I saw no other op on whatsoever, even though I have emails with this company where they assure me you can register without purchasing an annual membership. I also read a horror story about a pet being euthanized because the owners registra on had lapsed and according to the story, when the chip was traced to the manufacturer, the manufacturer told the shelter the dog wasn’t registered. I did not personally confirm this possibility, and in fact I was told the opposite - that once registered the info stays in the system indefinitely. However, I was pre y shocked when I went to my own pet’s chip manufacturer site and it said my registra on had expired. Does that mean my dogs wouldn’t get back to me if they were found? I haven’t called yet to get that answer. One great thing I found was that there are some totally free chip registry sites, and they even compile info from mul ple (coopera ve) places. I read stories from people who tried searching for their pet’s chip online and the only reason they could track it back to themselves was because of these free registries. Their own chip manufacturer did not trace it to them. I registered all of my pets with one of these free registries and I recommend everyone do the same. It sure can’t hurt, and it might make all the difference in the world.

Thankful Sunday Brunch for Everyone! An invitation from Jim Nelson, member of our Session

Sunday, November 20 following worship

On Sunday November 20th, following worship service and the short congrega onal mee ng, you are invited to join everyone in Fellowship Hall for a Thankful Sunday Brunch. This is a free brunch! We will have breakfast casseroles and those famous s cky buns that everyone enjoys at our breakfasts. Why this brunch? Like me, no doubt you're having a really hard me the past couple of months at VPC. You might be thinking, “What do I have to be grateful for?” Always Give Thanks! Be joyful always; pray con nually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) When bad things happen, our first reac on is not to be joyful. I too, feel like saying, "If God really loved me, this wouldn't be happening!" But then I look at all the ways God has blessed me and VPC. God gives me great, amazing gi s all the me, and I hardly ever remember to say, "Thank you." If I paid more a en on to praising God and less a en on to my problems, I'd be a more joyful person. What about You? I’m asking everyone to start a list of the ways God has been good to you and to Valley Presbyterian Church. Then bring that list to Thankful Sunday Brunch. Remember, this is a free brunch on Sunday, November 20th, following worship. Join our VPC friends giving thanks.

Besides chipping, it’s always a good idea to have a tag for your pet with your phone number on it. There is no point in having someone take your dog to a shelter, hope they scan, hope the scanner reads the chip, wait for them to track down the number, and wait for someone to contact you if you can avoid all of that and get a call directly when your pet is found. Most major pet store chains have a machine that will etch tags for you in just a few minutes and for just a few dollars. I s ll believe strongly in microchipping our pets, but I also believe we need to be educated about all of the various issues, and make sure our pet’s chip will, in fact, be traced to us if our pet is ever lost. Have a talk with the company that makes the chips you have in your pets. Find out exactly what you get when you register your pet. How long does it stay registered? What happens if the pet is found and the registra on has lapsed? What frequency are their chips, and are they the ISO standard? If you are paying an annual fee, what are you ge ng for that fee? Microchip, ask some ques ons, and put a tag on your pet with your phone number. THEN you can rest peacefully, confident that your pet has the best possible chance of ge ng back to you, if it should become lost.

Celebrating Life As We Go Forward By Parish Nurse, Chris Erickson

We all, in some way, are going through something difficult, whether it be moving, the loss of a loved one or friend and Pastor, a change in our health, a change in financial status, or even a change in our daily rou ne. A few weeks ago my father passed away. He was a business owner, pharmacist and one who loved music. He put what he wanted in his advanced direc ves - and there was no argument as to what we needed to do. It was a Polka Mass. I grew up dancing and singing with my father as he played his accordion. He had his own band with his brothers by age 18. I guess I inherited that love of music as I have been a church organist since age 10 (I won’t give away my age). His funeral mass wasn’t somber - it was totally upli ing. As I turned around to look at my aunts and cousins, they were wiggling in their seats. As I turned to look at my dad’s younger brother, he said, “This is incredible, this is him.” We got to remember him just the way he wanted. My point is, how o en in sad mes, or mes that are difficult or stressful, are we grateful for just celebra ng life. God gives us the strength and carries us through all sorts of difficult moments. We need to celebrate our life, our gi from God. We look forward to working through these mes, and for that we are a stronger person, and closer to God. As we go forward toward Christmas, let us celebrate what we do have, what we can do, and the posi ve things all around us. As Peter Pan says, “To Live is an Adventure.” What kind of adventure would you like to have? May God’s upli ing blessings shine on you.
