Girl Greatness starts here!
November is a time when we reflect on the sacrifices our men and women in service made and continue to make fighting for the rights and freedoms of all peo-ple. We must never forget.
We would like to thank everyone who supported Guiding by buying a box of our yummy mint choco-late cookies. Cookies help support our many activities throughout the year.
Spark units have been going on nature walks and learning about animals. They have held enrolments, sold cookies, went on scavenger hunts, learned about healthy lifestyles and are making poppies for Remem-brance Day.
Brownie units are working on their program, going to camp and learning about Canada 150. Some held Halloween parties, enrolments and will have a visit from a Girl Guide music trainer.

Mapleridge Cooperative PreschoolAnother school year is underway and we are excited to see so many new and returning students. September was a busy month as students got acquainted with each other, rekindled friendships and learned about pre-school routines. In October, our morning and afternoon classes enjoyed learning about the season of Autumn, Harvest and Thanksgiving traditions as well as celebrat-ed Halloween. Highlights of the month included field trips to Kayben Farms and the Calgary Corn Maze where the children learned about pumpkins, visited with farm animals and enjoyed a fun-filled autumn adventure. In November, our classes look forward to immersing them-selves in fairy tales and nursery rhymes in the classroom as well as exploring the world of Dinosaurs.
If you are looking for more information about Mapleridge Preschool, please contact us at 403-278-9594 or visit our web site at www.mapleridgepreschool.com.
We are a volunteer organization for youth aged 5-26 years. If you are interested in volunteering or registering your child, please visit our
website at myscouts.ca for information and group locations. We are an inclusive organization and financial assistance is available.

The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) was in-troduced in 2008 to help individuals with severe and prolonged disabilities save for their long-term financial security. However, many Canadians have not yet taken advantage of its benefits, which can help disabled indi-viduals provide a better future for themselves and their families.
A participant may hold only one RDSP account, which is limited to a lifetime total of $200,000 in non-govern-ment contributions. Contributions are not tax-deduct-ible, and the plan is not designed as a short-term sav-ings vehicle or for regularly withdrawing money in the short term.
RDSP benefits include the following:•Contributions accumulate tax-free until the money is
withdrawn.•Contributions do not impact federal benefits and have
little, if any, impact on provincial benefits.
Government Grants and Bonds Available If eligible, you can help build your RDSP with govern-ment grant and bond contributions.
Savings bonds – The government may pay into an RDSP a Canada disability savings bond of up to $1,000 annually, up to a maximum lifetime limit of $20,000, dependent only on family net income with no personal contributions required.
Savings grants – An RDSP beneficiary may receive a Canada disability savings grant of up to $3,500 per year, up to a maximum lifetime limit of $70,000. The amount is based on contributions and family net income.
Both bonds and grants are available until the year the participant reaches age 49. Generally, bonds and grants must remain in the account for at least 10 years before a withdrawal may be made, and withdrawals must begin by the end of the year in which the participant reaches age 60. Additionally, for any account established on or after January 2011, the RDSP may carry forward unused grant and bond entitlements up to 10 years preceding its opening.
Rollover OptionAs of July 2011, a deceased individual’s Registered Re-tirement Savings Plan (RRSP), Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) or Registered Pension Plan (RPP) can be rolled on a tax-deferred basis into an RDSP for a financially dependent infirm child or grandchild. This option is often overlooked.
It’s important to be informed about the steps you can take today for your financial future, including knowing if you or a family member may qualify for the RDSP.

Who Are We and What Do We Do
Hello and welcome to our new monthly column!
You’re probably wondering who the Federation of Calgary Communities is. We are a local non-profit organization that supports over 220 other small non-profit organizations in Calgary, including our city’s community associations. In case you don’t know what a community association is, they are also non-profit organizations that exist in every neighbourhood in Calgary. Community associations work to foster a sense of belonging by bringing neighbours together through social, recreational, and educational opportunities close to home, as well as be a voice for community life on issues that affect the neighbourhood. A great example is this community newsletter. Much of this wonderful content is gathered and produced by your community association. There are 152 community associations in our city, and we at the Federation of Calgary Communities are their support organization!
Did you know that community associations make up the largest collective volunteer movement in Calgary, with more than 20,000 volunteers involved?! Many Cal-garians aren’t aware that community associations are run by volunteers in the community. These volunteers make up a Board of Directors, which needs an organi-zation that understands their needs and can support them in their various roles, and that’s where we come in!
For over 55 years, we at the Federation of Calgary Communities have been educating, supporting, and encouraging the organizations we serve and their volunteers. How do we do this? In short, we offer 50+ educational workshops every year along with over 400 online resources, we provide one-on-one support and networking opportunities, and we celebrate and pro-mote the great work taking place in our city’s commu-nity associations.
To learn more about us at the Federation of Calgary Communities, or community associations in general, visit us online at calgarycommunities.com.
See you next month!

The House SparrowArticle by JG Turner; Photo by Andrea Hunt
The House Sparrow is a member of the Old World spar-row family native to most of Europe and Asia. This little bird has followed humans all over the world and has been introduced to every continent except Antarctica. In North America, the birds were intentionally intro-duced to the United States from Britain in the 1850s as they were thought to be able to help with insect con-trol in agricultural crops. Being a hardy and adaptable little bird, the House Sparrow has spread across the continent to become one of North America’s most com-mon birds. However, in many places, the House Sparrow is considered to be an invasive species that competes with, and has contributed to the decline in, certain na-tive bird species.
Fun Facts:•The House Sparrow is part of the weaver finch family
of birds which is not related to North America’s native sparrows.•The males have a grey crown and underparts, white
cheeks, a black throat bib and black between the bill and eyes. Females are brown with a streaked back (buff, black and brown).•These little birds have only been in Alberta for about
100 years made themselves at home here by taking advantage of urban human environments, where food and home sites are provided.•In Alberta, House Sparrows can be found in backyards,
parks, suburban and cultivated fields, and urban areas. They are rarely found in far northern areas.•House Sparrow make untidy nests in boxes (some-
times taking over another bird’s nest), under eaves, in crevasses in buildings or masonry or stone structures, in spruce trees, and, in cold climates, even in the heat vent outlets of commercial laundries. These birds may raise up to three broods a season.•These birds usually travel, feed and roost in assertive,
noisy, sociable groups, but always maintain wariness around humans.•Although often disliked for their raucous and unsani-
tary manners, the House Sparrow provides great fod-der for the study of bird behaviours in general because they are so commonly found in areas populated by humans.
If you find an injured or orphaned House Sparrow or other wild bird or animal, please contact the Calgary Wildlife Re-habilitation Society at 403-239-2488 for tips, instructions and advice, or visit our website at www.calgarywildlife.org for more information.

Canada observes the tradition of Remembrance Day on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Other nations observe a solemn day but at differ-ent dates. For example, ANZAC Day is observed in New Zealand on April 25. In South Africa, Poppy Day is marked on the Sunday that falls closest to November 11.

TAKE ON WELLNESS
The Three Biggest Mistakes People Make Trying to Lose Weight, Increase Energy, and Get Fit – And What to Do Instead
By Kirei Yasunori
We have covered why burning fat, not sugar, for fuel is important. Last month we discussed how weight lifting is the keystone component of exercise. Have you tried moving the weights slowly up and down to a ten count to eliminate momentum and increase the effectiveness of your workout?
This month I will talk about goal setting and implement-ing new small daily behaviors that achieve the larger dream.
What is your health goal? Ask yourself why this goal is important. Imagine your-self having achieved this goal. How do you feel and look? What is your energy level? Do you walk taller? Are you proud of your body? Do you feel attractive in your clothes? Can you do the things that are important to you?
Now consider how this person that you have imagined yourself being moves through his or her days. What are
the behaviors that created this person? What choices does this individual make around food, movement, stress? What support does this sort of person seek to achieve goals?
Start to act like this person. Be this healthy human that you are becoming!
Will Durant summarizes the ideas of Aristotle as: “We are what repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act but a HAB-IT.” Commit to the process of becoming that healthy, fit person, not to the goal. Repeat small, healthy behaviors over and over to achieve your dream. Reward yourself for sticking to the process and have patience for your achievements to arrive. Google healthy habits and add one to your life every week. They may be as simple as drinking a glass of lemon water every morning or tak-ing a deep breath and rolling your shoulders once a day. Just keep adding the behaviors that will create the per-son that you intend to become.
Good luck on your journey to be a healthy, fit person.
Ask Charles
REAL ESTATE COUNCIL OF ALBERTA
I just listed my home, and my real estate agent told me we had to hire someone to professionally measure my home. The measurement was done, and now my agent sent me the bill. What should I do?
The first thing you need to do is check your Seller Rep-resentation Agreement (listing agreement). That agree-ment outlines your responsibilities and the responsi-bilities of your real estate professional, including who is responsible for costs that may be arise during the listing. If the agreement you signed states the seller is responsible for additional costs, or it states the seller is responsible for paying third-party services, such as measurement companies or photographers, you’re go-ing to have to pay that bill.
More and more residential real estate professionals are hiring professional measurement companies to mea-sure their listings, but it’s not a requirement. There is a requirement to measure residential properties before listing them, but real estate professionals are allowed to do the measuring themselves.
If, for whatever reason, your real estate professional doesn’t want to do the measurement themselves, that’s fine. There are services out there that will do property measuring according to the required standards, but those professional measurement services come with a cost. Some real estate professionals may pass the cost on to their seller clients and set that out in the listing agreement, while others will see it as a business ex-
pense, for which they will eventually be compensated through the commissions they earn on the sale.
If your agreement doesn’t specifically indicate you, as the seller, will have to pay for or otherwise reimburse your real estate professional for third-party services, your real estate professional cannot require you to pay for such a service.
If your real estate professional continues to request payment or otherwise attempt to force you to pay, please discuss it with their broker.
“Ask Charles” is a monthly question and answer column by Charles Stevenson, Director of Professional Standards with the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA), www.reca.ca. RECA is the independent, non-government agency responsible for the regulation of Alberta’s real estate industry. We license, govern, and set the standards of practice for all real estate, mortgage brokerage, and real estate appraisal professionals in Alberta. To submit a question, email [email protected].

Know the Signs of Stroke and What to DoA stroke is a sudden loss of brain function caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain (ischemic stroke) or the rupture of blood vessels in the brain (hem-orrhagic stroke). The interruption of blood flow or the rupture of blood vessels causes brain cells (neurons) in the affected area to die.
The effects of a stroke depend on where the brain was injured, as well as how much damage occurred. A stroke can impact mobility, sight, memory, speech, reason, and the ability to read and write.
Stroke is a medical emergency. It’s crucial to call 911 or get to an emergency department immediately if expe-riencing signs of a stroke, even if the symptoms pass.
General symptoms of a stroke include: •Sudden numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of
movement in your face, arm, or leg, especially on only one side of your body.•Sudden vision changes.•Sudden trouble speaking. •Sudden confusion or trouble understanding simple
statements.•Sudden problems with walking or balance.•A sudden, severe headache that is different from past
headaches.
F-A-S-T is a simple way to spot the main symptoms of a stroke.
F = Face. Is it drooping?
A = Arms. Can you raise both?
S = Speech. Is it slurred or jumbled?
T= Time. Don’t waste it. Call 911 right away.
Acting quickly can improve your survival and recovery.

Hello friends and neighbors,
I hope you’ve enjoyed our lovely fall and had a wonder-ful Thanksgiving with friends and family.
The month of November is a time for remembering those who sacrificed for our freedoms. I am extremely grateful to all the men and women who showed cour-age, determination, and bravery when they were called upon by their country to serve. It is important for us to share our veteran’s stories and experiences with the younger generation so they their bravery and sacrifice is not forgotten. During the month of November, I ask you to join me in wearing a poppy to honor and remember those who fought to protect the freedoms and values we Canadians hold dear.
Our Provincial Government is working to make life bet-ter for Albertans. Our economy is recovering, with econ-omists across the country predicting that Alberta will lead the way in economic growth in Canada this year.
Still, we know many families are facing financial chal-lenges, which is why we’re committed to making life more affordable for Albertans. We froze tuition fees at Alberta’s universities, colleges and post-secondary insti-tutions - for the third year in a row.
Through Energy Efficiency Alberta, we have helped thousands of Albertans save money on their electrical bills with instant savings and online rebates on energy-saving products like LED light bulbs, programmable thermostats, tankless hot water heaters, and much more. You can learn more and sign up for updates on the program at www.efficencyalberta.ca.
As we move through the Fall Legislature Session, our government will continue to make improvements to modernize Alberta laws and make life better for all Al-bertans. I look forward to hearing your thoughts, in-sights and opinions of the proposed legislation by email at [email protected], by phone 403-640-1363, or I person at #10, 8318 Fairmount Dr. S.E
