VOTE YES! (continued from page 1)

“Getting a 60% favorable vote on the two ballot questions is a tall order. But I’m betting on Mason City citizens. Just as they stepped forward a decade ago to approve the public library bond issue that was the linchpin for the Vision Iowa project, I think they’ll see the importance of voting YES and YES to move our community forward once again.”Robin Anderson, President & CEO, Mason City Chamber of Commerce

“As a retired U.S. Army soldier, I can tell you that protecting our way of life is important to me. And sometimes we have to take risks to keep the things we hold dear. The time to take action is NOW. Please join me in voting YES (and YES) on the ballot questions for the River City Renaissance project.”Major General Gary Wattnem, USAE (RET)

“We’re excited about this business model. It provides the best opportunity for the long-term sustainability of The Music Man Square complex, and frees up our volunteers to focus on sharing Meredith Willson’s musical legacy.”Warren Torkelson, Volunteer, The Music Man Square

Congressman Steve King met with area business leaders during his visit to the Chamber office. He updated the group on the progress being made on the farm bill, health care, tax reform, and foreign relations. King also gathered input from those in attendance on several policies he is working toward, and he offered insight into President Trump’s leanings on issues that matter to Iowans.

ach of the candidates running for Mason City Council was asked to respond to the following email: “Thank you for stepping forward to represent our citizens in the upcoming city council election. While the Mason City Chamber of Commerce does not endorse candidates for public office, we DO take positions on issues. Our members indicate their biggest concern is workforce attraction and retention. With 40.3% of our local workforce age 55-64 and our population declining, we must reverse this trend to keep our local businesses supplied

with qualified workers. We believe the River City Renaissance Project will improve our community amenities, increase our tax base, and attract and retain workers for North Iowa. The project will leverage more than $15 million in private investment and up to $10 million in state investment to help fund $38 million in capital improvements to our community.

What do you think? Please help us to educate our members by providing your responses to the following questions: 1. Do you support the River City Renaissance Project and will you vote YES and YES on the two ballot questions?2. If not, what is your plan for Workforce Attraction and Retention, and how do you propose funding your plan?

Mayoral CandidatesAlex D. Klein: “Yes, I do plan on voting yes for both. However, we need to go further, we need to provide further initiatives to incentivize recreational activities to move into town, something that could be achieved with reasonable, but generous, tax abatements, assuming that they meet some requirements. If anything, I feel like this plan doesn’t go far enough, but it is well put together and has my absolute support.”

Mason City Council Candidates: Where They Stand

E

Alex klein

Colleen Niedermayer: “I will vote for the lease agreement and bond issue, but am following very closely the financial calculations along with the final approval of the Development Agreement. If elected, I will fully support whatever the voters decide on these issues.”

Bill Schickel: “YES and YES.”

At-Large City Council Candidate Tom Thoma: “I plan to vote YES and YES.”

2nd Ward City Council CandidatesLionel J. Foster: “As it relates to both ballot questions, at this point I am undecided on how I will vote. According to www.northcentraliowa.net, ‘North Central Iowa has a powerful suite of incentive and assistance programs. Free ground, tax rebates or abatements, investment tax credits and workforce training programs are just a few examples of what could potentially be available to qualifying projects.’ Therefore, I would support enhancing the Chamber’s, and NCI’s, efforts to assist employers who face a shortage of workers in high-demand jobs.”

Troy Levenhagen: Did not respond, but publicly has stated he favors the project and will vote yes for both ballot items.

Will Symonds: “I’ll be voting YES on both ballot questions. I think that this has a pretty good risk to reward ratio. A project that could potentially bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars to Mason City and North Iowa seems like a great thing for us. Having a potential concert venue (among all the other things the Multi Purpose Areana can be used for) like this, along with the convention center can also be another method of bringing in and retaining the families we’re trying to bring to Mason City.”

4th Ward City Council CandidatesJohn W. Jaszewski: “I am strongly in favor of the project, and have been recruiting households to display VOTE YES signs!”

Jack Leaman: “YES”

Matthew E. Marquardt: Did not respond, but publicly stated to voting against both ballot items.

Phillip Sanchez: Did not respond, but publicly stated to voting against both ballot items.

Visit Mason City unveils interactive display Visit Mason City recently unveiled a new, interactive display located at the Top of Iowa

Welcome Center (along I-35). The “hands-on” display was designed to engage visitors in learning about Mason City as a tourism destination while enticing them to visit and experience

the community first-hand. “We wanted the display to be unique and interactive, but free of electricity,” said Lindsey James, Executive Director. “We did consider digital, touchscreen options, but felt visitors of all ages would be more likely to interact with this type of display and hopefully learn a thing or two about Mason City.” The new display features large, vibrant images on the exterior panels which pay homage to Meredith Willson and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. Rotating blocks feature a photo puzzle as well as question and answer trivia. An informational “flipbook” provides a community overview featuring attraction, dining, shopping, event, and lodging information. Posters within the flipbook are interchangeable and can be updated by VMC staff as needed. Visitors can step inside the display to learn more about Meredith Willson and even take a short lesson on 37-key piano. Additional instruments, donated by Rieman Music and the Mason City Foundation, were also incorporated into the design. “We are very excited about this project,” said James, “It’s more than just a promotional piece, it tells Mason City’s story.” Of the 18 Iowa Welcome Centers in the state, the Top of Iowa Welcome Center is the most visited with more than 30,500 travel parties (84,000+ individual visitors) signing the guest book in 2015. According to the 2015 Iowa Welcome Center survey, nearly 69% of visitors who stopped at the Top of Iowa Welcome Center were 54-75+ years old and nearly 40% stopped at the Center seeking visitor information.

your future focus mindset, to start the conversation within teams about how different personal approaches to the future can strengthen each other. “We can’t afford not to understand how our mindsets are getting in the way of the future.”

The Schwinns spent a sabbatical year traveling the world to find leaders who understand the importance of creating meaningful work. They sought answers to, “What do companies and communities need to do to attract workers and work places to create thriving communities where people want to live?” People they interviewed “challenge the assumption about what it means to lead,” Carol Schwinn said. Their examples demonstrate that investments in helping employees find meaning in their lives resulted in organizational success.

“The transformative workplace, as part of its essential purpose, creates the context in which people can grow and develop to their highest potential, as fully aware and conscious participants in the evolution of life on our planet,” she said. “A commitment to expanding the consciousness of people enlarges the purpose of the organization, leads to its prosperity, and ultimately to greater possibilities of more peace in the world.”

Pals challenged North Iowans to take these examples back to their own workplaces. “I am counting on you to continue this conversation about what’s possible, to create a workplace where people thrive.”

TRANSFORMING WORKPLACESTODAY’S WORLD IS UNDERGOING transformational, disruptive change, and the mindset of North Iowa leaders needs to be focused on the future.

“The places where we work, and the people who manage and lead us, can influence a shift in how we address the challenges we face,” according to David and Carol Schwinn, educators and authors of “The Transformative Workplace.”

In September, the Schwinns spoke with community leaders in Mason City about transforming the work culture here. They were joined by Rox Pals of 3Consulting, an organizational change consultant (rp3consulting.com), and Dr. Chris Groscurth, future of work expert and founder of Leadership 4iR, a future of work think tank (Leadership4iR.com).

Their discussions relate to the Vision North Iowa initiative to create a strategy for regional economic growth and prosperity. North Iowa Corridor EDC, Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Mason City Chamber of Commerce sponsored the meetings because encouraging employers to improve workplace culture can lead to better retention of workers and community growth.

“This is a conversation we’re just beginning to have in North Iowa, about what we see in terms of the future of work,” said Pals. “These are not the kinds of changes we experienced 30 years ago. Everything right now is what we consider transformational change. We have to begin to change our world view to create that future. The very

nature of work is changing.”

The workforce also is changing dramatically. “There is no time in our history where we’ve had as many generations, with different perspectives, working together before.” Pals said today’s workers demand meaning and purpose; the chance to use their talents; jobs that fits their lives; and organizations that share their values.

Groscurth said only one-third of today’s employees are considered engaged in their work, meaning involved, enthusiastic, and committed. That percentage goes down to 22 percent for Millennials (born between 1980 and 1996), and by 2020 they will make up half of the workforce.

Technology is progressing at an exponential rate and transforming work. “The Fourth Industrial Revolution is upon us,” Groscurth said. “It’s the fourth major economic era in modern history.” While the first three revolutions were marked by leaps in mechanical inventions, today’s revolution is driven by “the convergence of the physical world, the digital world, and the biological world.”

“How do I develop a future mindset?” he asked. “I want to give people hope about this. I don’t want to live in a world where the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the last industrial revolution we talk about, the last of the great improvements we’ve made as a society.”

“NIACC does not discriminate in employment or education. See http://www.niacc.edu/about/non-discrimination-statement/ for additional information.”

North Iowa Area Community College’s John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center will celebrate thinking globally and engaging locally with Global Entrepreneurship Week events on November 13-19, 2017. Activities are to spark and feed the entrepreneurship spirit in North Iowa. “Global Entrepreneurship Week is a wonderful opportunity to recognize those entrepreneurs who have taken the steps and accepted the risks that go along with starting a new business,” said Tim Putnam, Pappajohn Center Director. “It's also a nice opportunity to encourage people to look into what being an entrepreneur is all about. They can even give it a try with our NIACC Marketplace event where students, faculty, alumni, and staff are provided a venue to sell their art, jewelry, and other creations.

YIELD Community Impact Projecthis year’s YIELD students have chosen to assemble and ship care packages to military men and women deployed overseas. The holidays will soon be upon us, and these heroes will be away from their families during this special time of year; a simple care package filled with letters from young people, snacks, personal items,

and games/activities will brighten their holiday season.

The students have named their program “With Love, From YIELD” to show their gratitude to our brave members of the armed forces. The students have contacted the Iowa National Guard and will be sending packages through the Yellow Ribbon program to Iowa soldiers stationed abroad. Students are also looking to reach North Iowa military personnel. In order to accomplish this, they encourage North Iowans with immediate family members who are deployed to supply YIELD with an overseas mailing address for their loved one. Students will seek donations for supplies and raise funds for shipping costs.

If you would like to make a donation to help, or if you would like a package sent to an active military family member, please contact YIELD coordinator Allyson Krull at [email protected].
