TRANSCRIPT
As the school year is rolling along with many exciting events for our students, I would like to draw your attention to a few friendly
reminders.
For Safety Reasons
When coming into the school during operational hours you are required to check in with the office and sign in. Please do not simply
wander through the school.
Bus dismissal at the end of the day is a very busy time for our office staff. Please be mindful of this time. When making changes to
your child’s method of going home, please arrange this the previous day. A note for the homeroom teacher and a phone call to
your bus driver ahead of time are required in order to change how your child normally goes home. When an emergency arises the
day of, please contact the office prior to 2 pm. Calls placed after 2 pm may not leave enough time to change the method of
transportation for your child that day.
When coming into the school to pickup your child to go home at the very end of the day. We ask that you do not arrive before 3
pm. Having parents in the hallway directly outside of the classroom is distracting for the students and teachers are attempting to
get in the last few minutes of instructional time.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Clothing
As the weather is getting gradually colder it is important to ensure that your child has and wears appropriate clothing. At school we
go outside for recess breaks when the temperature is above -21ºC. When riding the bus it is also important to have clothing for
cold temperatures. If the bus is delayed or if there was a bus failure or accident the bus gets cold extremely quickly.
Jr. High Washroom Changes
You will notice some changes to the Jr. High washrooms in the front foyer. We have changed the independent stalls in the alcove
outside the washrooms to be a public all gender washroom. This will allow the public to have access to an independent stall when
in the school. We will also be moving the door from the outside hallway to the inside washroom area, in order for there to be
privacy in the main washroom area for our students. There will be no changes to the use of the boys and girls washrooms. You
will notice different signage to reflect these changes.
POWERSCHOOL APP
Yes there is a Powerschool App!!! After logging in for the first time, you are able to download the app and add it to your phone or
other personal device for easy access.
Counselor’s Corner It is already the end of October and I hope you got to spend some relaxing time with your families and friends during the thanksgiving break.
October at Namao was all about the virtue of respect. All the students had the opportunity to compete in character education competitions such as door decorating contests and poster building based off this virtue. There were prizes won at many grade levels for these competitions. A school wide respect competition was also held and staff nominated individual students who demonstrated respect. Numerous students were nominated for showing respect around Namao and it was amazing to read all the wonderful things our students do. Three winners were randomly drawn from these nominations and received a prize.
November is the month of creativity here at Namao. We encourage our students to find creativity within themselves, to be innovative, and to cultivate new ideas. To promote this school virtue, we will be holding a calendar contest where students from PEP to grade 9 will create an art piece that represents what Namao is to them. Art pieces will be chosen from each homeroom and we will be making a Namao school calendar out of them. Some of these art pieces will also be selected for our art walk in the spring.
Some of Namao’s grade 6-9 homerooms will be participating in the SADD Liquor Bag Campaign this month. Students will be decorating liquor bags to promote the dangers of impaired driving. These will be distributed to a local liquor depot, where they will be used during the holiday season.
The SPCA will be coming to Namao school November 7th to present to our K-9 students on animal cruelty, animal morality, and animal kindness. Please note there will be a dog at this event.
Danielle Reed will be coming back in November for a follow up session with our grade 7-9 students on value and relationship building. The first presentation was very well received by staff and students and we are excited to see the enthusiasm for her upcoming presentation.
To ensure our character education reaches our K-3 students, I will be visiting our early childhood classes in the month of November to read stories relating to bullying, apologizing, relationship building and anxiety. I hope to cultivate some good discussion and brainstorming to assist in teaching our children basic skills that help in everyday life.
If you or any families you know would benefit from Christmas Hampers from the food bank this year, please contact me directly. These referrals remain anonymous and help support our community.

Loose Parts Play Area We would like to say a huge thank you to the students in the PEP, Grade 1 and Grade 1/2 classes for helping to pull up all the weeds in the loose parts play area.
Thank you to the parents who sent in gloves and tools and a special thank you to the parents who came along to help.
We filled 13 large garbage bags with all the weeds.
Grade 6E—Week long Science School
6E enjoyed their week at Science School at the Telus World of
Science. During the week students explored the topic "How do
scientists use models to communicate?"
This learning experience was done through examining
exhibits, building models,
meeting experts, and learning
about science topics.
The children truly enjoyed this
experience.
6K Fall Green School
For the week of September 18 to 22, the students of 6K attended the Green School at the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens, located near Devon.
The goal of Green School is to orient students to the natural world in an enjoyable manner, and to create awareness of and develop appreciation for the environment. Increased environmental literacy promotes positive human interaction with nature, and develops adults who live and work with an enhanced understanding of how we impact the earth.
The students spent their week exploring and learning about the gardens, grounds and forests, working alongside various experts (ecologist, horticulturist, ornithologist), developing their journaling and observation skills and deepening their understanding of human impact on the earth.
.
Namao BOKS Program
Our BOKS Program has got off to a great start and the
student’s are showing personal growth already. Students
have been working on building up their running endurance
and practicing strength building skills.
BOKS is a before school physical activity program based on
the research of Dr. John Ratey. He identifies that aerobic
exercise promotes optimal function of our brains.
The fall term will run until December 6th. We are having
lots of fun in order to “Build Our Kids Sucessess”!
Student Vote 2017
On October 12, Namao School held a Student Vote. In the days
leading up to the event, Grade 6 students learned about municipal
government and the voting process. They also researched the mayoral
and council candidates in our electoral division, and shared their
learning with students in Grades 4 to 9.
Grade 6 students did an excellent job of running the polling station and
acting as ballot clerks, scrutineers and DROs. The results of the student vote were the same as the actual Division 1 results!
