MORNING PRAYER AT ST. LUKE’S by The Rev. Gayle McCarty

I am excited to share that on Decem-ber 1 we begin a new offering at St. Luke’s of praying the Daily Office of Morning Prayer. We will gather in church each Wednesday through Fri-day at 8:30 am. This brief service is the perfect way to begin our day as a much-needed reminder of God’s reign. It grounds us, sanctifies the day and helps us throughout the rest of the day to be more prayerful of what we think, say and do.

We will pray together Daily Morning Prayer: Rite II, which begins on page 75 of The Book of Common Prayer. Do not worry if you are unfamiliar with the service. Newcomers will be guided through the service and will soon learn the flow and be at ease.

As we enter the season of Advent this coming December, I encourage all to consider praying Morning Prayer in community with us at St. Luke’s on at least one of the week days it is offered. Jerry+ will preach at both the 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. services. If you heard Jerry+ last Maundy Thurs-day as our guest preacher, you know that you will not want to miss the opportunity to hear him again. Jerry+ is Memphis born and raised, attended Lambuth College and General The-ological Seminary. He served Episcopal churches in Georgia and South Carolina and in our diocese he has served as the Assist-ing Priest at St. George's and the Priest-in-Charge at All Saints. He is retired but stays in demand as supply clergy. Jerry+, who lost his eyesight due to a car accident while in high school, is committed to Camp Able where he has served for several years as chaplain. Camp Able is a camp for children and youth who are "differently abled" with conditions such as Autism or Down Syndrome and is held at St. Columba Episcopal Conference and Retreat Center. Please help us to warmly welcome Jerry+ and Sandy back to St. Luke's! - Gayle+

A PRAYER FOR VETERANS DAY NOVEMBER 11 For Heroic Service, The Book of Com-mon Prayer, page 839

O Judge of the nations, we re-member before you with grate-ful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liber-ties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

MINISTRY PROFILE - EMILY CANTER LAY READER, OFFICE VOLUNTEER, CHAIR OF ECW FALL LUNCHEON AND DINNER I have lived in Jackson always, and have been at St. Luke’s, with my husband, Ron, since our confir-mation in 1974. Together, we were EYC leaders until our own children, Margaret and John were teenagers, and I directed the annual Epiphany Feast of Lights for many years after that. I have sung in the choir, taught children’s Sunday School, helped with Vacation Bible School, and folded palm crosses. I am a past president of the ECW, having decorated tables and helped with the Fall Luncheon & Dinner, staying out of the kitchen, lo, these many years. The parishioners of St. Luke’s have been as family to me…and I don’t go anywhere without taking the spirit of this place with me.

I have served as president of The Jackson Theatre Guild, danced in, and made masks for Ballet Arts production and painted Cinderella carriages. I am a retired 3rd grade teacher and librarian with the Jackson Madison School System.

You might not know that I have three grandsons, Caleb, Josh and Bobby, and another grandson, Sam, coming in December.

ST. CLAIRE RETREAT - FIRST FRIDAY RETREATS

On the first Friday of each month (summers excluded), women of all faiths are invited to St. Columba Conference and Retreat Center for a half-day silent retreat. After greetings and coffee, a brief meditation and communion are offered; then a peaceful, reflective two-hour period of silence be-gins. During this time, retreatants walk on beautiful wooded paths, sit by the fire, relax in a chair on the patio, knit, read, write, pray or just quietly commune with God. At the end of the silence, a short service proceeds lunch and conversation. The next First Friday Retreat is scheduled for November 3 from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. For reservations, please visit https://www.saintcolumbamemphis.org/stclare/.

RIFA NEEDS FOR NOVEMBER

The RIFA food item for this month is canned hams for holiday food baskets for Madison County elderly citizens.

Please bring your Thanksgiving hams to the church by November 15.

SERVANTHOOD by The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads

The Hub Club is a ministry of Area Relief Min-istries in the Hillcrest Circle neighborhood, just a few blocks east of St. Luke’s on East Chester Street.

HUB stands for “Helping Us Build.” The HUB Club works with parents, schools and churches to build strong students who ACT like leaders, LEARN like leaders and LIVE like leaders, or students who are “ALL in!”

Through The HUB Club’s ongoing partnership with parents, the students grow to ACT like Leaders. By connecting with teachers, principals, coach-es, guidance counselors, and HUB mentors, the students grow to LEARN like Leaders. By reaching out to local pastors, professionals, churches, and parents, the students grow to LIVE like Leaders. With ongoing prayer, evidence-based and best-practice approaches, and community-spanning collaboration, The HUB Club is truly a community effort in “Helping Us Build” Leaders.

This month keep the Hub Club and its leaders and its students in your prayers, especially Martavis Williams, Program Director; Charles Currie, Director of Community Development; Christine Jones, Program Special-ist; Anna Reid, HUB Club Intern; and Lejuan King, HUB Club Intern.

NOVEMBER PET SUPPLIES DRIVE FOR DOWNTOWN DOGS GROUP For the month of November, we will collect Milk Bone Dog Biscuits (plain

- no colors - any size).

Please place your donations in or at the

collection box in the Narthex. Thanks!

THE JERRY HOLT MEMORIAL RECYCLING DRIVE by Harry Ecoff

“Paper Recycle Sunday” was originated by Reverend Dea-con Tommy Rhoads and assigned to parishioner, Mr. Ger-ald (Jerry) Holt to implement. Jerry was a retiree, a faithful attendee of Sunday services, and generously volunteered his service to the church and community. Jerry also donated his 1980 vintage Dodge van for a storage container of the recycled paper.

Jerry Holt passed away July 15, 2014, after a long term illness and the pro-gram was continued by Dr. Lorne Semrau and me. A motion was passed by the Vestry in June of 2015 to honor Jerry and renamed the Paper Drive to “Jerry Holt Memorial Recycle Program”.

Lorne Semrau passed away earlier this year and was a tremendous loss to the program. We have recently added Chuck Humphrey, John McCutchen and Preston Turner helping with the collections. In addition to the monthly recycling drive, we are picking up cardboard from Ace Hardware weekly, and collecting paper from several office operations monthly. We are picking up loads from parishioners’ homes if the contribution is too bulky for them to haul to church.

The program has grown from an average of 950 - 1,000 pounds of paper per month to an average of 3,000 pounds of papers and 40 pounds of alu-minum cans recycled each month. The actual amount of money received by St. Luke’s varies monthly proportional to the Commodities Market and we are saving valuable resources that are not going to a landfill.

Thanks to everyone participating in the program and remember…the pa-per, plastics and aluminum cans are collected the last Sunday each

month in the alley on the north side of the Church. The collection date

for November is November 26.

HURRICANE RELIEF COTNINUES We will take up a special collection on Sunday, November 26 for the victims of the recent hurricanes. Please make your checks payable to St. Luke’s to be distributed to our three recipients, the Diocese of Texas, the Diocese of West Texas and Episcopal Relief and Development. Note Hurricane Relief on the memo line.

ARTICLE III. VESTRY Section 4. Nominations. A nominating committee shall be made up of the outgoing Vestry members who are not eligible for election. This commit-tee shall receive nominations with the hope and expectation that more nominations will be received than the number of upcoming vacancies on the Vestry. All persons nominated by the nominating committee or from the floor shall be certified canonically for eligibility and shall express their will-ingness to serve. Who is eligible for Vestry nomination? The by-laws read as follows:

ARTICLE III. VESTRY Section 1. Eligibility. Any Confirmed Communicant in Good Standing who has attained the age of eighteen (18) years or over shall be eligible for election to membership on the Vestry. No members of the same household may serve concurrently on the Vestry. Also, no employees of the Parish may serve on the Vestry.

St. Luke’s further uses the following “Guidelines for Vestry Qualification”: According to church law, Vestry members must be 18 years old and a “confirmed communicant in good standing.” A communicant in good standing is one who has a record of working, praying and giving to the parish. Potential Vestry members should demonstrate a commitment to Jesus Christ, St. Luke’s and The Episcopal Church; set an example in personal stewardship; be willing to be responsible for management of parish property and finances; be willing to commit to a three year term of service; and share in seeking God’s will for St. Luke’s.
